Can someone explain the DMB haters to me? They're not my fave band by any stretch, but my taste in music enables me to recognize how amazing this and some of their other tunes are. I can understand not caring about their music, but actually hating it? I don't get it
"dark" may not be the right word for it but it's definitely a heavy song. And Dave explains it as a song touching on drug addiction. The "Warehouse" being a place to escape. Actually, if you take the part out that sounds like island music, it IS a very "dark" song. In my opinion.
He plays weird ass chords based on the root note of the chord, and a strange accentuation of it - see two step for an example of this. But for his riff-ier songs like Tripping Billies and So Much to Say, he bases his riffs on the notes played in the barre chord of whatever root the riff/song is based around. If you look at it objectively you'll see what I'm talking about. Talk about an addictive riff to play though.
its obvious dave does drugs but its not like he get real fucked up before his shows, he probably has a joint maybe a shot or 2, or 5 lol then goes on its not like hes wasted or anything just gotta loosen up a lil get the feeling
Ha. He forgot the order of the words in a few lyrics in the middle of the song, lol. God, I love Dave. The simple errors give it an interesting twist. The way he's singing this song, it's obvious that Mr. Dave Matthews is high as a lovely kite! :)
Jerry Garcia from The Grateful Dead, another great jam band, frequently forgot the order of the lyrics to their songs as well. I think it give live performance some spice and sets it apart from manufactured studio sounds. The wild tangents these guys go off and the improv is fantastic! Cant have that without a few mistakes here and there. I love it all. Long live and love DMB!
Who cares what he does, now or in the past. If he does anything currently anyway. He makes good music, as the rest of the band. And you just have to acknowledge them for that, because otherwise none of us would have heard them.
msrysignals i like how you say it like your a life time friend, you dont know anything for sure. This song is about his drug use clearly but i like how you say he uses a lot of drugs. In the AOL sessions he says thats one of the biggest misconceptions people have of him that he smokes a lot of weed.

he does alot of drugs, but he doesn't speak about it publicly. He's admitted to using heroin in his early days as well as coke. Recently he's suffered from severe alcoholism.
That brother is a TRUE SHOWMAN...you even questioned yourself...did he mess up? Or did I hear wrong? Anyway it was seamless! Its STILL a GREAT Performance!!!!
thats my personal opinion, this song alongside warehouse, ants marching, and typical situation are the best for DMB, grace on this band, one of a kind, JUST AMAZING
I mean he plays standard accoustic taylors now all the time with the few electric songs. The guitar you see him play in all the old videos like Too much and trippin' billies, that black thin body one...he used to use in the live shows all the time, now he never uses it anymore, when did he stop using it?
I'm not exactly sure when he started playing the Taylors, but the Taylors he plays are Grand Concert style guitars that are smaller bodied and tend to have a brighter sound to them. Not so bass-ie. He's playing a Martin dreadnought in this vid, I believe it may even be his signature guitar. he still plays this (and other dreads) when he plays with Tim quite a bit but he's usually playing with the smaller Taylors with the whole band.

@whitebread11 shut up dude, im so sick of you clowns quoting albums, years and insruments, we get it!! you worship dave, go get laid weirdo statistic freak and listen to something you will never truley get, I dont even know why dave gets it on this level. he's never been really lost in this thing, but he spits fire on it, so i listen and i occasionaly glance at you retards and laugh. dont forget to pick your suit up at the cleaners tomorrow.
@barrybeaut111 so should i go insult something that you enjoy just for the fuck of it?everyone has music that they enjoy on this level, or anything that you enjoy for that matter. so how bout you fuck off buddy. let the dave fans enjoy their fun
@whitebread11 nice bro, Im happy to see such a quick response and from the heart too. your right, i was having a bad moment, im an enormous fan of dave to the point my girl makes me wear headphones cuz i have to listen to every version consecutively like a bug with o.c.d. its was a dumb comment and i admit i was wrong. now your turn, fuck off till next time stat brat.
@Happyloser21 He did not mean electric, Before '99 Dave used the Chet Atkins which is that black guitar like the one the crash promotion concert, then in '99 he used the martin which he now uses for acoustic shows and then starting '00 he switched to the famous taylor he uses today
Just amazing!
