Enough wisecrack. Michelle Kwan deserved much more. She is about what it takes to be a figure skater. She has made herself a career that spans more than just one year on the ice. She has made countless amount of contribution toward the sports and is in support of other athletes. She is NOT all about money or fame. If people knew about Michelle Kwan, in the past, they could have known her as much today! No matter who Michelle is, she is always a fantastic competitor!
@getrealandsee well the pampered princess can't deal with the heartbreak of having to face reality and justice at the Olympics for the 2nd straight time. Enough tears to fill a swimming pool and the audience stands bc obviously she can't do it for herself. I think that sums it up :)
It's very very sad to me that one of the greatest skates of all time (Kwan skating to Cassidy's "Fields of Gold") is being dominated by stupid comments from "allenglandlawns" that have nothing to do with the performance. Sometimes free speech is, frankly, overrated!
I go on here to watch this video about once every year or so because it's one of my favorite performances... but also to laugh my ass off at the crazy beeyatch who haunts every Kwan vid forum to spew her psycho-hate all over the Kwan boards. Usually, it's the same deranged person posting under myriad names. Hilarious, but pitiful. Get. A. Life. Sheesh!
@anubethc45 Bullies? Michelle Kwan was the bully to real and hardworking athletes... using her media appeal and "darling" status to shove Emily out of Torino... having her rabid defenders trash anyone who suggests otherwise. Kwan is nothing but a media creation who seeks and craves the spotlight no matter the cost to her sport and her dignity.
@allenglandlawns: Have you actually watched Kwan's interviews? She is about as down to earth and modest as they come. She is not a "media creation." She worked her ass off to get to the level she achieved.... you make her sound like Paris Hilton or something. Your hatred is astounding to me. Kwan is not a bully, and Emily Hughes was not at all upset or annoyed by Kwan wanting to skate in 2006, so why are you hung up on it?
@mlc2005 Down to earth and modest? mmm doesn't seem that way to me. She speaks in circles, tries to sound out simple cliches with deliberate inflections, and careful/measured words that don't flow very well...and just sounds so fake. Her words do NOT sound genuine and sound very scripted out. If you want down to earth and modest, take a look at Sarah Hughes... so vibrant, genuine, intelligent, and poised...didn't need an image-obsessed PR team to coach her at all
Irina and Sasha both had their opportunities to beat Michelle Kwan, but in many competitions, they lacked something in the eyes of the judges. For Irina, it was the artistry. For Sasha it was the consistency. If you would like to make more claims, do so. I will obviously comment back. :)
@TeamKween2010 Wow...Even though we may not agree about Kwan, it's so refreshing to see reasonable posts from a Kwan fan (assuming you are one by the looks of your name) and I am very impressed with your knowledge and perspectives of the sport. =)
Continuing with Irina. At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Irina had the chance to win the gold medal. All she had to was win the free skate. But after some shaky landings on her jumps, she came away with the silver medal. And that was definitely a gift. In terms of artistry (which is also the tie-breaker of the long program), it was absurd to see judges award her 5.9s. As you can tell, she was so close to winning the gold medal. But the judges played it fair and gave it to Sarah.
Onto Irina. In many ways she was the one who was "babied". At the 2001 World Championships in Vancouver, Irina had the opportunity to win the gold medal. Michelle had skated before, landing seven triple jumps, including a triple-triple. Had Irina been able to produce a clean skate with seven triples, she could have EASILY won that championship. However, she struggled on her jumps, and that cost her the gold medal.
In Sasha's entire career, I find three highlight peformances where she competed against Michelle and came out the winner. At the 2004 US Nationals, Sasha skated a clean short program. Whereas, Michelle had a shaky landing on the double axel. Sasha won that phase of the competition. She faltered in the long. Sasha skated a beautiful short at the 2004 Worlds. Faltered in the long. Sasha skated clean at the 2004 Marshalls Skating Challenge, and she won. Michelle won the bronze. Fair judging! :)
I agree that Irina and Sasha are wonderful in their own ways, but when it came down to the "Grand Slams" of figure skating (the World Championships and US Nationals for the Americans), they did not deliver their best. Lets begin with Sasha: Sasha had so many times to win against Michelle at the US Nationals. She would constantly skate decent short programs, but falter in the long. That cost her so many times at the big competitions. However, when if she skates well, Sasha was rewarded.
Michelle Kwan was never "babied", allenglandlawns. First of landing any triple jump is not easy. For you to claim that Kwan was always landing the same simple jumps is ridiculous. It's not that Michelle did not want to do these "REAL athletic moves" that you are referring to. She did not have to. Instead, Michelle was going for a well-balanced program. And in the 6.0 judging system, many judges favored Kwan in the artistry. Irina lacked this and Sasha was not as consistent in her jumps.
@HowsaBowsaYowsa Yep :) Kwan was all snivelly on that podium bc she was shocked and angry she wasn't given Gold. She should have been grateful and relieved she even got to stand up there when Sasha clearly skated better in both short and long.
@allenglandlawns Don't you have anything better to do than rip apart someone that you don't even know on Youtube? She was shocked and angry that she wasn't gifted the gold? That IS an ignorant assumption. Why do YOU nit pick at every little move and turn it into a negative with Kwan? You even rip her up and lie about things when she was a 13 year old child. You sound like an obsessed fan of hers (the scary kind of fan). You seem like a nice person. Why are you really doing this?
@Karosanyo Oh yes, Shelly was shocked and angry alright. Those ain't tears of happiness up there. It's a TRUE honor to stand on an Olympic podium...to represent your country...to soak in the great work you put in to get there...that medal belonged to Sasha. Kwan should have been THANKFUL to be up there and feel relieved to take home what should have been Sasha's. Instead...but but but [sniffle] I KWAN [sob] I supposed to have gold! attitude. Irina lost too. Look how happy she was to be up there.
@allenglandlawns Your mind is so twisted when it comes to Kwan... In my OPINION, Kwan was angry and upset with HERSELF. Once again, why would she think that they would gift her gold? Look at her scores at the 2000-2001 Worlds where she skated her very best (even the Brits said that her scores were too low). She knew that she had to skate her best to win and she didn't. She landed 7 triples in '98 and still ost (she didn't skate her best). Who knows what was going through her mind.
@Karosanyo Hmmm maybe she actually deserved those scores. Poor dear was gifted with so many 6s, she figured she was entitled to them every time she manages to stand up the whole time. Irina is given no such advantages. Always having to up the ante, always pushing it, and fighting back only to find her efforts are futile in the face of the Kwan favoritism. I apologize if you took offense to my statements, but I stand by what I say =)
@allenglandlawns Sorry, Kwan didn't deserve 5.6's for landing 7 triples with a triple-triple (both the Americans and the Brits agreed with me). No way. Actually, Irina was babied a lot more at Worlds and the Olympics more than Kwan (they gave Kwan low scores in 2000-2001 waiting for Irina to skate). I feel that she didn't deserve to win the long at 2002 Worlds as well. I also feel that Michelle beat Irina in the LP at the Olympics (Kwan did more triples and Irina's program WAS atrocious!).
@allenglandlawns Irina also didn't deserve the bronze at the 2006 Olympics. Sasha DID NOT deserve the silver in 2006 as well (falling and two footing most of her jumps). Kwan landed 7 triple at the '98 Olympics and 5 in 2002. Kwan was NEVER propped up at those majors! Oh, and Irina only ever landed 7 perfect triples once at Worlds (Kwan did four times). Irina also never landed 7 at the Olympics (Kwan did in '98). No need to apologize. You just cannot be honest and objective with Kwan.
@Karosanyo I still stand by what I say about Kwan. It seems you are the one who cannot be objective about the LOL. Babied and gifted. Poor dear needs the protection from reality. Always landing the same simple jumps. Lots I guess to compensate she's too scared or simply cannot do the REAL athletic moves. Irina and Sasha. True athletes. They earn what they get but the Kwan-lovers must put the pretender above all others. And I am honest alright. More than Kwan ever was, is, or ever will be.
@allenglandlawns I cannot be objective with Kwan? False. I stated many times that she had no business going to Worlds in '97, she should not have won 2001 Skate America, etc. Always landing the same simple jumps? How many Worlds did Sasha land 7 triples with a 3/3? Landing 7 triples with two lutzes IS NOT easy. Irina also didn't do a more difficult 3/3 on a consistent basis like Tara and Yuna did. Michelle Kwan was superior to Sasha and Irina.
@allenglandlawns Stop acting like your opinions about Kwan are valid! You are so judgemental (everyone has to do and act how YOU want them to). I disagree with your opinion that Sasha should have came in third (Kwan's jumps were better). Irina was such a sore loser. She stormed off after she found out that she lost (just like she did at the 2000-2001 Worlds where Kwan skated circles around her). She stated many times that she should have won (her country even made her her own gold medal).
@HowsaBowsaYowsa No. I think that Kwan deserved the bronze medal. I feel that she deserved to win the short program and beat Sasha in the long (her jumps were MUCH better than Sasha's). Favoritism? What about when Sasha was gifted the silver in 2006? Falling on her butt TWICE and two footing her two triples in her sequence. Sasha was the one the was gifted medals left and right...
@Karosanyo Kwan deserved to win the short program? Bronze medal? I think you need to take off those Kwan-colored glasses. What part of her scores (and her reaction to them) doesn't scream outright favoritism and entitlement? Sasha gifted? Defend all you want about Kwan "earning" her marks (when most were just outright handed to her pre-determined) and then to call on Sasha, who has to EARN her marks all the time like real athletes do, despite the clear favoritism for Kwan? WOW...
@HowsaBowsaYowsa just like how sasha got the silver in the last olympics when she fell on her ass like 10x lol. sasha the choke artist (even at exhibitions). the girl even falls during exhibitions lols! if they favor michelle then they must be fucking sasha cause she gets on the dam podium with a million falls.
@tigerbite01 Sasha makes the podium on pure talent and breathtaking athleticism. She falls but pays for her mistakes and receives absolutely no pity. Kwan can stumble, bumble, trip, splatter, etc but it's OK Shelly, here's that Gold medal you were promised. Poor, poor dear... Sasha beat Kwan's old and slow crap in SLC. Kwan just took home the medal...poor poor Michelle...choking the Olympics again despite all the favoritism for her...give the poor girl a bone for pity's sake...OMG what a joke.
My gosh, Kwan is so babied. "I lost the gold! I need everyone's love and pity to set foot on ice again! I'm even wearing a gold dress to show how much I deserved it too!" This was so cheesy, it's almost laughable. She could hardly stand up for herself so the audience does it for her LOL
She said in an interview that she surprised herself that she started crying with about a minute left in the program. She said she just felt so much love in the arena, and it was overwhelming. Isn't that beautiful?
Great, great,Michelle! You brought many of your fans, including me, to tears! And the Eurosport announcer, Mr.Simon Reed was choking up as well! Thanks a lot, Michelle :-)
I watch this when I need to release some emotions... I become a blubbering mess; not because it is sad, but because it is a human being bearing her raw heart and soul to beautiful music, and she does it without holding back. An absolutely stunning, masterful moment in history, let alone sport history. God, Michelle, and I think I speak for many: Man we miss you!
I always loved how she looks going back into that classic triple lutz entry - she has this serene look on her face like she's about to fall back into a pool a water.
