As a performer, I'M OFFENDED. Who does she think she is??? You never stop a show for anything other that DEATH. If she wasn't having a heart attack on stage nothing should have been stopped. None of the cast members of RENT stopped the show because of flash photography and even then they didn't even stop the show when their DIRECTOR DIED THE SAME DAY THAT THE SHOW WAS GOING ON! C'mon now... -_-
STOP STOP STOP STOP SCREAMING at the audience RIGHT NOW. You're PLAYING a character Patti - WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!! How DARE YOU! Get off the stage! I will go out there and demand a refund if you keep screaming at us. THREE TIMES. Three times you sceamed at us. THIS is the THEATRE. I have to say this. Patti has lost her public MANNERS. She has forgotten that this is a COMMUNITY and all of us, except for that person on stage has respect and I DON'T appreciate it. Thank you.
She's beyond unprofessional. She should have had someone managing the stage or the house eject the person who was taking photographs. She could have tried to pull off her low-class tirade as coming from Rose, but neither her acting nor her mindset are up to such challenges. Someone can even be heard saying, "Patti, they're gone" rather than calling her "Rose."
Absolutely ridiculous. I think it's WAAAAY past time for her to hang it up. Her "singing" is for the birds, as well. Jeepers Creepers.
@PorcupineWeirdo not only is your comment a total misrepresentation of what I wrote but you apear to be a very small and discourteous child who mustn't comment on matters that one is not educated enough to form an opinion about. Please direct any other ludicrousness towards a Rebeca Black video.
It's true, people have lost their public manners, dressing for the theater as if going to the movies, eating durring a live performance, Patti Lupone had the right to do what she did.. after all it's certainly what Ms. Gypsy Rose Lee would've done!
I couldn't care less who she is. YOU DON'T BREAK CHARACTER. EVER.
Her rant was completely unprofessional, and it could've been handled many other ways. The show was nearly over at that time, she could've gotten an usher or someone else to handle the photographer if it was pissing her off so much.
She is right on so many levels... respect for the music and performance, commitment to the audience for the best possible delivery. Can you imagine all the years of hard work, everything leading up to that moment being compromised in such a way? A word or phrase forgotten, a nuance lost due to a distraction. There's no argument here, no way!
"We have forgotten that we are in a community. And this is the theater."
And what's the #1 rule of the theater? THE SHOW MUST GO ON. I don't care if she's Patti Lupone. Heck, with her high status, I'd expect her NOT to do this. She yells at the photographer (who apparently was hired to take photos for the news) for being disrespectful when the most disrespectful thing an actor can do is break character in the middle of a show that audiences are paying a lot of $ to see.
Patty is a beast. Though it is highly unprofessional to stop a show because people are taking pictures . . . it's Patti LuPone. It'd be different if it was someone like Laura Osnes or J Robert Spencer. Being a performer myself, I know how irritating and distracting it is to see those little red lights flashing in the audience. People should know better
I dunno what to think of this cos if it was me i'd be pissed but i wouldnt make them stop the whole show to kick that person out and even if i did i wouldnt have got them kicked out i would have made security take the camera away and give it back to them after MY SHOW!
I think they should have raised the prices of the tickets just because she did this... I would pay to see patti lupone scream at an audience member like that. love.
@ogancantr I know if I paid 120 bucks to see Patti Lupone and she personally yelled at me and kicked me out I would never step foot in a theatre again. lol
Wow. This is the first time I've heard the FULL recording of the incident and I think it was all handled really well. Patti is the perfect professional. LOVE her. We all own the right to our own image and how it's used. The whole "camera phone" society has taken that right away. The US doesn't need a "big brother" government watching us. We've become Big Brother. We're doing it FOR them! This right goes beyond the theatre. It's everyone's right.
I love it, but I'm disappointed by Ms LuPone stopping the show. Yes, it's distracting. And yes -- she's a legend. Even more reason to let the show go on. At this point there's like -- 10 minutes left? And it was the night before closing if I read right. It was diva-licious, but anyone who knows theatre knows that, unless someone is dying, you continue with your song.
@pdxoracle BTW: I love Patti Lupone's work. Her Mrs. Lovett is my favorite of all time. Any of you calling her a has-been are obviously new or new-ish to the arts. Lupone is a great diva of musical theatre, and you might educate yourself before you start slinging titles around. She's not sad, she's at the pinnacle. She is the apex of American Theatre and is revered with good reason.
I'm going to say the same thing I said about Hugh Jackman's cell phone interruption: what LuPone does here is incredibly unprofessional. Yes, she's a star and can do what she wants but that doesn't excuse it. I've been on stage and had people taking pictures, talking to the actors like they talk to their TV, watching football games on smart phones, and numerous other distractions. You have to ignore it. It's part of performing live. If she had a problem, she could've let the crew deal with it.
@darksmile There is only one Patti LuPone, that's for sure. xD It does suck when people are rude in the theatre, but it's not the actor's job to kick someone out. Though I'm sure the audience was greatly amused by the outburst. Nothing like seeing a star take someone down.
Honestly, I've wanted to get up and yell at some audience members too. I detest spending an arm and a leg to go to a show, and have sombody's cell phone go off, or having them practically sit on my lap trying to get a good angle for a picture. Be courteous people. Or I'm sure there's a monster truck jamboree somewhere where you can be as rude as you want.
@jamiesexonlegs Patti LuPone's career spans decades. She is a legend in the theatrical community and always will be. She has given a lifetime of service to this art and our culture has benefited from her work immensely. She is NOT now, nor will she EVER be a has been.
I appreciate you repeating the exact same comments in a different order as though you have developed a new argument. I understand your opinion, my dear. I am simply telling you your opinion is wrong.
@jamiesexonlegs We'll discuss this again when you learn to type in English, or to be fair to those who do not speak English, some other intelligible language that follows the rules of proper punctuation and spelling within said non-English speaking culture.
Until then, regardless of your albeit inaccurate opinion, what have we learned today? If you go see a show in any theatre, Don't Take Pictures. It's tacky, horrid, distracting, and could get you kicked out, plus loathed by Patti Lupone.
@jamiesexonlegs You really think I'll be famous?! That is so sweet!
BTW, you think that just because everyone does something or that's "what people do" that makes it ok. But it's not. Didn't your mother ever say "if all your friends jumped off a bridge...?" it's wrong to take pictures in the theatre because not only is it distracting to the crew, performers, and audience, but putting shows on youtube that costs 120 bucks a ticket takes thousands away from the industry and could cost jobs.
@Akuchan7 oh u do make me chuckle sweet heart..... instead of getting worked up over some comments that people make, why dont ya grow up and do something better,
and yes i have heard that saying but that has nothing to do with what i said u dozy thing..
we all have opinions and u just have to accept that darling, now i grow tired of u and ur argument, so thats the last i will say get a life
I can see both sides of the story. There's an interview where she expalins what happened and she said it was a motorized camera so it was constantly clicking and making noise.audience members should wait til they get to the stage door for pics. makes me think of what I would do if stuff like this happened though. I've done performances when my family is taking pictures though and i can see and hear them and it is a little distracting, but thats different.
She has every right to be upset. They make announcements before every performance that it is a danger, and it clearly is a danger. I would know, I've performed on stage and camera flashes have affected my vision. Its so annoying.
Patti get the hell over it! It cost a fucking fortune to see you on Broadway...you should be proud anybody even wants to take a picture of you!! Pictures yes....videos no...
I think if you're a true theater lover you would not mind an actor stopping the show to call-out an obnoxious audience member. I agree with Ma. Luponepublic manners have gone out the door, especially with cell phones
Seriously... if your on here hating I'm pretty sure this has never happened to you before. It's so annoying when people take pictures while you perform on stage and it can be VERY dangerous! Who cares if it was harsh, she did it for the safety of everyone else making this production run so it was necessary to do so and I would be VERY embarrassed if I was that guy...
I fully appreciate how frustrating it must be to have someone taking photos when you're onstage, but I don't think stopping mid-performance is acceptable. Sure, when you're watching this video the initial reaction is "well done for calling him out!" - but I for one would be royally pissed off if I had paid good money to see a show and the actress did this in the middle. It's also inconsiderate of the audience's time as well.
Yes the manner in which Patti called the photographer out was a little harsh. However atleast she did call him out. Unlike Kristen Chenowth this situation was a person choosing to be completely disrespectful NOT to Lupone but to the other audience members. Imagine being the person beside whomever is taking pictures and how distracting it must have been. She clearly explains that that person had no respect for the community of the theater. A community made up of the cast, crew, and audience.
Wow! I love the typed commentary and I can NOT believe that she did that! I mean, I think she had every right, especially because she was probably dealing with that kind of thing the whole run of the show. She probably just got fed up. I would have! And wouldn't that be the best Broadway show EVER! :)
I just read her bio, and in this context, this is just another in a long series of missteps by Ms. Lupone. Yes, her talent is huge but she is really at base, just another tempermental, entitled diva-bitch. She truly needs to get over herself. It's no wonder that Arthur (Laurents) banned her from his work. Read her memoir - you'll see what I mean...
The base ball bat thing, i totally agree with you, it was an overstatement i suspect...i dont think Twomix actually wanted to hit the guy over the head haha :P
In relation to the religious thing, i never said following a religion is bad or good, but the degree to which people take the lessons in the bible and the way some clergy teach it is a little extreme IN MY OPINION. No need to take offence, i'm not trying to get at all crotchety. Just thought i'd put that out there
Are you kidding me? Have any of you ever been on stage and been blinded by a barrage of flashing lights while trying to sing and dance? That's really dangerous and not to mention annoying. What if the flash had blinded a crew member holding a heavy object and dropped it on someone's head? She didn't do it to do it. She did it to prevent a safety hazard.
@popper785 I agree with you. Safety is a part of it, yes, but furthermore, theatre is an artform. The audience is a participant in that art and there are rules that have to be followed. The beauty of what actors do onstage is that it is immediate, anything could happen at any minute. Taking pictures and videos ruins that.
@Bomberzone1745 Christianity the religion itself isn't the issue, its the extremist way its administrated. And its the exact same case with other religions, but I really don't want this to turn into a religious debate : /
I think miss LuPone showed real gut here! Many performers may have carried on and granted that is mor professional, but unsless the people who are rude and disrespectful enough to interfere with an actors performance are publially called out and shown for their wrongs then everyone will start to believe it is acceptable! I think had LuPone not shown Her frustration here that person would happily have gone on to ruin another performance.
I think she went 'pazzo' on stage because Merman did the same thing when some guy was screwing with her "money" number in "Call Me Madame", which, just to mention, would be done very well by Patti Lupone. "Lupone" does not mean "big wolf" in Italian for naught. I know this as I am Italian and in Italy right now and I love Lupone. Pronounced correctly......LOO-PO-NAY.........just to mention it, of course. Ciao a tutti.
you're a hater, whomever you are. Patti was simply airing out the frustration that ALL ACTORS feel that aren't performing in community theatre..cameras are not CUTE or APPROPRIATE in legit THEATRE! It clearly wasn't arrogance, it was frustration. When is enough enough? And by the way, who are YOU to judge anyone? Isn't she still human?
I agree with Patti LuPont .. it's freaking annoying when some idiot would keep on taking pictures with the flash turn on.. this happened when I was watching 'The Lion King' show .. until one of the ushers called the guy's attention. IMHO they should just kick those caught taking pictures or hit them on the head with a baseball bat.
I was reading Kristin Chenoweth's autobiography "A Little Bit Wicked" where in one part she described being heckled by a young man with tourette syndrome who couldn't control his impulses when he saw her on stage, he apparently really liked her. And you know what she did? She met him and his mother backstage with the utmost class and graciousness. She didn't want to jeopardize the performance for the sake of her own pride. Apparently Ms. Lupone isn't as mature.
@GlanceofGlory Oh, so you know Patti, and you know how mature she is correct? HOw can you sit there and say Apparently Ms. LuPone isn't as mature as Kristin Chenoweth, unless you know Ms. LuPone personally. Judging by this specific event is ridiculous. If you know anything about Patti at all, you'd know that she is a very mature and classy person. She just stands up for what she believes in, and if that means stopping a show to do so, so be it. I believe what she did was the proper thing to do.
@lorkell Classic defense, I don't know every detail about Patti Lupone so then I must not be allowed to judge her by her actions as a public figure? Sorry, I have an opinion and a sense of judiciousness like any half-respecting person would or should, I hold people to standards. Is there something wrong with that? I have a right to disagree with Patti Lupone's conduct.
I see a bunch of comments saying you would be annoyed. Try to imagine how hard she has worked, to get where she is. If I were her, I'd probably do the same thing. It is disrespectful to her to be taking pictures during her performance.
I can't say I'm surprised by some of the comments here. Too much in our society today people act as they please with absolutely no regard for anything else going on or anyone around them. You see it in the stores, on the road, waiting in line at the bank - everywhere. "Oh, there's a performance going on? Screw it - let me take some pictures...no biggie." This individual was asked/told not to do something - he went ahead and did it and got called on it in a big way. It should happen MORE!
The thing nobody knows is that was a person who was hired to come and take pictures by the show. She was told of this before the start of the preformance.
The thing nobody knows is that was a person who was hired to come and take pictures by the show. She was told of this before the start of the preformanc.
It also tells me that this person was most likely using a flash. I can tell you that flash photography is most definitely a safety hazard for the performers. We've all been temporarily blinded by camera flashes. Imagine that happening when you are up on stage. You risk bumping into props, falling down trap doors or even falling off the stage. Yes being blinded only lasts for a few seconds, but in theater, a lot can happen in those few seconds.
At the theater I work at, if someone (ie media) is assigned to take pictures during a live performance, they will come with their press credentials and the performers and the front of house will know who that person is and where that person is sitting and there would be no grounds to stop the show. The fact that she did stop it tells me that this person was not to be taking pictures.
Yeah, I agree with the majority of you. So what if that guy was taking photos? Yeah, he wasnt supposed to, but unless someone got blinded or hurt by the flash, it's not that big of a deal. Patti overreacted, plus SHE BROKE CHARACTER! And not to mention, this was one of the last shows. And i dont know why everyone was clapping when she was being a huge diva about it! That's all :)
what are you talking about ? this IS what LIVE theatre is about, I love it when something unexpected happens during a live show, the audience obviously LOVES it too...if you want polite, nice and gentle go see My Litlle Pony;...this is Patti Lupone and she isn't taking no shit from anyone! A bit like the Ethel Merman story Elaine Stritch told in her show...I would have payed extra to have been there! :-)
well, whatever you think of her and this incident, one thing's for sure, I think anyone assigned to take her pic during a show will do it with a telefoto lens from the waaaay back of the theatre. She definitely has balls. If this person taking pics was doing it for the news, he was obviously distracting her. He needs to learn how to do it without distracting the actors onstage.
I think my favourite bit of this clip is when she tells the orchestra to stop, and you hear the bass player doesn't stop for a minute, and you hear his funky little descending bass line. Classic!! Lol
I can't believe everybody claps and hoots and hollers. I would be SO annoyed. At Patti. It was a very amateur and egotistical way of behaving. I would expect more from her and would quite frankly be pissed at her and every jackass that thought it was some kind of badass moment.
@cdftaurus The reason they clapped and cheered for this is because taking pictures and using cellphones during a theater show is extremely frowned upon in New York. I mean EXTREMELY. zo she was pretty much speaking the minds of most of the audience on that night. Not justifying that they could've stopped this after the show, just trying to explain why they cheered for her. That's New York for ya.
@SweetAngelOfMusic94 I have a master's degree in vocal performance and aural theory (ear-training) was one of my best subjects. I'm telling you, she has trouble staying on pitch. When she gets into her upper register, she switches into this half-singing, half-screeching sound that is grating. Perhaps you are too blinded by your affection for her. As far as her diction goes, take a listen to "Buenas Aires" again from Evita. It is impossible to tell what she is saying.
@lsd77bju Oh my God, FINALLY someone who understands. I listened to Buenos Aires, she doesn't actually pronounce words, i thought she was sining If I Were A Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof. She has terrible diction, even in this temper tantrum she said O-preciate! And she always does way too much vibrato, and I can never understand what she says properly in songs except for a few. And she always shouts, honestly, learn to have some grace. She is nothing compared to Bernadette Peters.
@lsd77bju I'll tell you, I understand her perfectly. And I wouldn't have "affection" for someone who can't sing. She's extremely talented both as an actress and as a singer. Period.
@lsd77bju Well She hated Evita because the guy who wrote the music wrote it insanely high. She regards it as one of the worst experiences of her life. And she still got a Tony.
@SweetAngelOfMusic94 I will grant you that she is a good performer. However, "an extremely talented singer..."?!!! She can't stay on pitch. She screeches her high notes. And listen to the original cast recording of Evita. You can't understand half of her words. She is a bad singer. Period.
Her reasons for shouting out at the photographer is understandable. She does have merit in what she says. However, someone else needed to deal with that. "The show must go on"... And it's disrespecful in the name of theater to just break out of character to yell at the audience (unless it's Brechtian theater or something, which I'm sure it's not...) And the fact that she didn't even just continue, but she had to thank everyone else. Do it at the end? Just continue already.
Wow. Um, one of the basic, well-known phrases of theater "The show must go on"... You don't stop midshow. Like, I understand why she was pissed, and what she says does have merit, but people came to see the show, and her play ROSE. Not herself being disrespectful to the very name of theater...
You Don't Take Pictures At The Theater, Period! I would have been outraged as well. Especially since it was the third time a picture was taken, and they made an intermission announcement. That is usually only done at the top of the show. The idiot had it coming. I can't stand people who think they can just do anything they damn well please.
HELLO THERE, mad bitch with quite the diva complex- But oh yes, that's because she IS a diva. Of course. You know, I'm going to say it: I just lost all my respect for her. And that's sad, because she was my IDOL. But no. You don't stop mid show for anything. Unless there's some horrible injury. You don't stop a show to bitch out someone taking picture. Way to go, Patti. Rip everyone out of the illusion, and kill that nights performance. I'm seriously disappointed. ):
If she hadn't done that, they would be taking pictures the rest of the show. I stand by her in that decision. You don't take pictures in the theatre, people! Especially a dangerous flash like that, the actors have a chance of going BLIND! I'm an actor, so I should know. She made the right choice and that idiot probably learned his lesson. It has NOTHING to do with unprofessionalism.
Yeah, it does. I'm an actor too, hon. And that was unprofessional. She only got away with it because of who she was. If she hadn't done that they'd be taking pictures all show? Of course they would. But there are aaaaany number of solutions to that issue. That don't involve stopping mid song, and flipping out. Her priorities should be elsewhere.
@Kari166 If you think about it, she didn't break character because this is something her character would do. Acting must lie within yourself. Rose certainly would have done that. She probably could have handled it better. But the idiot taking pictures was really the one at fault.
@VisualSpotlight12, it doesn't matter if that's what her character "would do". She still yelled at a member of the audience. Doing that breaks the illusion on stage. She was acting as herself.
The guy who was there was supposed to be taking pictures, for an article or something. Besides, she couldn't have just gotten over it, and waited until she had to leave the stage, or until the show was over to complain to someone about it? There were a lot of other ways she could've handled this.
I love this and hate it at the same time. Of course it had to have been annoying as hell to be performing and have someone taking pictures. But breaking the fourth wall like that and completely stopping the show for that long just to get rid of one person is a little over-dramatic and obnoxious. She was well within her right to be upset, but stopping the show like that is unprofessional.
Even if she was right for being annoyed, one rule of theatre is to NEVER stop a show. NEVER. It takes away the entire illusion of drama from the audience.
Lmao you shouldn't take pics with flashes its really off putting. I remember once during defying gravity there was a series of 3 small flashes just as elphie rose into the air and it put her off slightly and completely ruined the effect.
Hmm I dunno what to make of this... Ms. LuPone is FABULOUS on stage in my opinion but I guess off stage she's a pain. I mean this is just over the top. If you saw the video of her acceptance speech at the Tonys she told the audience about drinking a shot every night before she went on stage ... I mean she said it in jest, but there is some truth to every joke I guess!!! Haha
Rock on, sister. Yes, it's ironic it was recorded, but oh, flash photography can interfere with an actor's performance. A few years ago, I saw Richard Griffiths get angry with a patron during a performance of "Art". The flash disrupted the rhythm of his performance, and he and his fellow actor had to restart the scene. *It's the theater*, people. Not a rock show.
You Go Girl!! Yes, ironic that it was recorded but she said on stage, what so many of us in audiences have wanted to jump up and say. Plus, it's hilarious in Forbidden Broadway's Greatest Hits!
This stunt is SO UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Yes, the theatre is a place where you aren't supposed to take pictures and record performances but LuPont should of had the decency to wait until the end of the show. That little stunt is so ridiculous and annoying I would've been so annoyed with this woman to no end. Just grow up and deal with the fact that there are people who are going to go against the rules. Shut up and keep singing, people don't spend that much money for you to make an outburst. Grow up!!
@mccplaymakers I agree with you soo much. At the end of this video it says she is some kind of woman, yeah a mega bitch. Who does SHE think she is some premadonna. Fuck her. Yeah taking pictures is not polite but please stopping the whole show, shes a drama queen and wanted attention at one of her last shows.
Performers have been fired for less happenings of breaking the performance.. Only if the show is selling because of you could you get away with such a thing..
I agree . I have no respect for this woman . If she was a true professional she would have continued with her performance then got the stage manager to notify the front of house and had them deal with the person taking photos . But instead she decides to create a spectacle !
@Subartimaeus for a start i have never used any form of photography in any performance i have attended , As a professional music theatre performer i am also aware there are standard procedures that can be used to deal with such annoying theatre patrons

It was diva-licious, but anyone who knows theatre knows that, unless someone is dying, you continue with your song.
pdxoracle 4 months ago 5
@pdxoracle BTW: I love Patti Lupone's work. Her Mrs. Lovett is my favorite of all time. Any of you calling her a has-been are obviously new or new-ish to the arts. Lupone is a great diva of musical theatre, and you might educate yourself before you start slinging titles around. She's not sad, she's at the pinnacle. She is the apex of American Theatre and is revered with good reason.
pdxoracle 4 months ago
I'm going to say the same thing I said about Hugh Jackman's cell phone interruption: what LuPone does here is incredibly unprofessional. Yes, she's a star and can do what she wants but that doesn't excuse it. I've been on stage and had people taking pictures, talking to the actors like they talk to their TV, watching football games on smart phones, and numerous other distractions. You have to ignore it. It's part of performing live. If she had a problem, she could've let the crew deal with it.

@okami37 well, you are not Patti. hahahahahaah.
besides, i hate people who dont follow the rules in the theater. it ruins the experience.
darksmile 4 months ago
@darksmile There is only one Patti LuPone, that's for sure. xD It does suck when people are rude in the theatre, but it's not the actor's job to kick someone out. Though I'm sure the audience was greatly amused by the outburst. Nothing like seeing a star take someone down.
okami37 4 months ago 2

Seriously... if your on here hating I'm pretty sure this has never happened to you before. It's so annoying when people take pictures while you perform on stage and it can be VERY dangerous! Who cares if it was harsh, she did it for the safety of everyone else making this production run so it was necessary to do so and I would be VERY embarrassed if I was that guy...
shaqman145 5 months ago
I fully appreciate how frustrating it must be to have someone taking photos when you're onstage, but I don't think stopping mid-performance is acceptable. Sure, when you're watching this video the initial reaction is "well done for calling him out!" - but I for one would be royally pissed off if I had paid good money to see a show and the actress did this in the middle. It's also inconsiderate of the audience's time as well.
blackbeardtwo 5 months ago 3
very ironic that this has been recorded and then shared online.
elizacitron 5 months ago 5
Yes the manner in which Patti called the photographer out was a little harsh. However atleast she did call him out. Unlike Kristen Chenowth this situation was a person choosing to be completely disrespectful NOT to Lupone but to the other audience members. Imagine being the person beside whomever is taking pictures and how distracting it must have been. She clearly explains that that person had no respect for the community of the theater. A community made up of the cast, crew, and audience.

TheMeatPatty 7 months ago
Are you kidding me? Have any of you ever been on stage and been blinded by a barrage of flashing lights while trying to sing and dance? That's really dangerous and not to mention annoying. What if the flash had blinded a crew member holding a heavy object and dropped it on someone's head? She didn't do it to do it. She did it to prevent a safety hazard.
popper785 7 months ago 71
@popper785 I agree with you. Safety is a part of it, yes, but furthermore, theatre is an artform. The audience is a participant in that art and there are rules that have to be followed. The beauty of what actors do onstage is that it is immediate, anything could happen at any minute. Taking pictures and videos ruins that.

Well done Miss LuPone!
EthanWhitcombe 8 months ago 4
I think she went 'pazzo' on stage because Merman did the same thing when some guy was screwing with her "money" number in "Call Me Madame", which, just to mention, would be done very well by Patti Lupone. "Lupone" does not mean "big wolf" in Italian for naught. I know this as I am Italian and in Italy right now and I love Lupone. Pronounced correctly......LOO-PO-NAY.........just to mention it, of course. Ciao a tutti.

GlanceofGlory 8 months ago
@GlanceofGlory ...Dammit I was going to say that.
I think that Kristin's way was much, much kinder, but I think that Patti might have realized by now that it doesn't stop anything...
emmadilemmasings 8 months ago
@GlanceofGlory Oh, so you know Patti, and you know how mature she is correct? HOw can you sit there and say Apparently Ms. LuPone isn't as mature as Kristin Chenoweth, unless you know Ms. LuPone personally. Judging by this specific event is ridiculous. If you know anything about Patti at all, you'd know that she is a very mature and classy person. She just stands up for what she believes in, and if that means stopping a show to do so, so be it. I believe what she did was the proper thing to do.
lorkell 5 months ago
@lorkell Classic defense, I don't know every detail about Patti Lupone so then I must not be allowed to judge her by her actions as a public figure? Sorry, I have an opinion and a sense of judiciousness like any half-respecting person would or should, I hold people to standards. Is there something wrong with that? I have a right to disagree with Patti Lupone's conduct.
GlanceofGlory 5 months ago

CantStandTories 9 months ago 2
At the theater I work at, if someone (ie media) is assigned to take pictures during a live performance, they will come with their press credentials and the performers and the front of house will know who that person is and where that person is sitting and there would be no grounds to stop the show. The fact that she did stop it tells me that this person was not to be taking pictures.
CantStandTories 9 months ago
Patti is performing at the theatre I work at on Thursday! We're gonna have to be on our toes!

Yeah, I agree with the majority of you. So what if that guy was taking photos? Yeah, he wasnt supposed to, but unless someone got blinded or hurt by the flash, it's not that big of a deal.

@cdftaurus The reason they clapped and cheered for this is because taking pictures and using cellphones during a theater show is extremely frowned upon in New York. It is impossible to tell what she is saying.
lsd77bju 1 year ago
@lsd77bju Oh my God, FINALLY someone who understands. I listened to Buenos Aires, she doesn't actually pronounce words, i thought she was sining If I Were A Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof. She has terrible diction, even in this temper tantrum she said O-preciate! And she always does way too much vibrato, and I can never understand what she says properly in songs except for a few. And she always shouts, honestly, learn to have some grace. She is nothing compared to Bernadette Peters.
xpo50 1 year ago 2
@lsd77bju I'll tell you, I understand her perfectly. And I wouldn't have "affection" for someone who can't sing. She's extremely talented both as an actress and as a singer. Period.

@SweetAngelOfMusic94 I will grant you that she is a good performer. However, "an extremely talented singer..."?!!! She can't stay on pitch. She screeches her high notes. And listen to the original cast recording of Evita. You can't understand half of her words. She is a bad singer. Period.
lsd77bju 1 year ago
Her reasons for shouting out at the photographer is understandable. She does have merit in what she says. However, someone else needed to deal with that. "The show must go on"... And it's disrespecful in the name of theater to just break out of character to yell at the audience (unless it's Brechtian theater or something, which I'm sure it's not...) And the fact that she didn't even just continue, but she had to thank everyone else. Do it at the end? Just continue already.
blahblahqaz 1 year ago 3
Wow. Um, one of the basic, well-known phrases of theater "The show must go on"... You don't stop midshow. Like, I understand why she was pissed, and what she says does have merit, but people came to see the show, and her play ROSE. Not herself being disrespectful to the very name of theater...
blahblahqaz 1 year ago 3
You Don't Take Pictures At The Theater, Period! I would have been outraged as well. Especially since it was the third time a picture was taken, and they made an intermission announcement. @VisualSpotlight12

@VisualSpotlight12, you know what else you don't do?
BREAK CHARACTER. She could've handled this so much better.
Kari166 10 months ago
@Kari166 If you think about it, she didn't break character because this is something her character would do. Acting must lie within yourself. Rose certainly would have done that. She probably could have handled it better. But the idiot taking pictures was really the one at fault.
VisualSpotlight12 10 months ago
@VisualSpotlight12, it doesn't matter if that's what her character "would do". She still yelled at a member of the audience. Doing that breaks the illusion on stage. She was acting as herself.
The guy who was there was supposed to be taking pictures, for an article or something. Besides, she couldn't have just gotten over it, and waited until she had to leave the stage, or until the show was over to complain to someone about it? There were a lot of other ways she could've handled this.

Mama Rose would have done the same exact thing if she or one of her children were performing.

@crazyforfire
You are right on about that.

@ugha323a And that's why I didn't see it as a breaking character issue at all.

Dang! I don't know another person who would've had the guts to take a stand like that. RIGHT ON!!! Flash pictures are the WORST!!!

Makes me wonder how many people (Besides the person that recorded this) were also recording and taking pictures.

Performers have been fired for less happenings of breaking the performance.. Only if the show is selling because of you could you get away with such a thing..

Did she just continue singing after this?!

I agree . I have no respect for this woman . If she was a true professional she would have continued with her performance then got the stage manager to notify the front of house and had them deal with the person taking photos . But instead she decides to create a spectacle !

I don't mean to stir up an unnecessary argument, but I'm sure you're one of the people who'd use flash photography during a stage play.
It can get real fucking annoying.

@Subartimaeus for a start i have never used any form of photography in any performance i have attended , As a professional music theatre performer i am also aware there are standard procedures that can be used to deal with such annoying theatre patrons
