They should change the checking rules a bit, you could get permanently disabilised after a honk like that, or even worse, dead. @kristenzard, there is a 2 second or like 3 stride gap after a player passes/shoot the puck in which they are still eligible to be hit. If the goalie had saved it would you still call it a late hit? No. His shoulder hit Salmela not his elbow and it was a combination of a big hit and his head hitting the ice that knocked him out.

I wouldn't give him any suspension and I hope Salmela is ok

Every hit is a potential injury. So therefore every hit can be considered lethal. It's a lose lose situation really. You cant allow hitting and expect to have no injuries. I've seen more powerful looking body checks but the player fortunately didn't get injured from it. I've seen harmless body contact but the guy get severely injured.  If you look at the hit, Carter didn't even go all out. It was just an unfortunate situation when it comes to allowing bodycontact. This is inevitable.

It's sad how all "pro-clean hit" use the "I play hockey and I know what I am talking about", or the "that's the way it is" to support their argument. That's quite thin and lame. Carter's hit wasn't even USEFUL. A hit is supposed to knock a player from the puck, not injure the other guy. In this case, the hit was made AFTER Salmela had shot the puck, plus it was made from his blindside (thus dirty). Carter is a good enough player to quickly turn away or try a deke instead of hitting here...

I get what you're saying, but it is quite hard after you've made the decision that you're going to hit the opposing player to just stop short. This was a bang-bang play. The shot and the hit were very close together, and you can't fault Carter for the severity, although normally that close to your net you should be more interested in knocking the puck away rather than obliterating your opponent.
