  • Killin.

  • The first guitar magazine I ever picked up as a ten year old had an article about Bern Nix in it. I am sorry to say that this clip is my first time actually listening to him play. I wished I would have listened to him earlier. While I am not a fan of a lot of free improv music, I really like this and Mr. Nix's playing here. Is he still alive and playing? If so, I would love to catch a show sometime!

  • @effsixteenblock50.

if it is not bop or modern it is no jazz? So why not if it is not new orleans it is not jazz? I learned at some point that jazz is about curiosity, interacting and being free to do what fits in your opinion and you need to have respect for for others to do that. I cannot see any sense in disrespecting someone because he does it a different way than i do or understand.

  • this is to jazz died: you kill jazz with opinions like this. Music and especially jazz is about doing something together and not against each other. If you don't like Vernon, you don't have to, but don't go out and say: He is no jazz musician. Jazz is improvisation and Improvisation is about being open. You closed the door, so perhaps you are not jazz????????????? just joking, decide for yourself!

  • @mojostflorian Improvisation alone is not enough to qualify as jazz. Improvisation was quite common many years ago in baroque and classical, but that doesn't mean that it's practitioners are jazz musicians. As for Vernon Reid - he likes to drop names like Ornette Coleman and he's apparently learned the diminished scale at some point but I've heard zero evidence that he's at all conversant in either bop or modern jazz idioms.

  • Not VR though, ron

  • People talk a lot of shit about

    "THE BEST GUITAR...."

    Whatever..

Bern Nix is the Billy Bang of the guitar. Why he isn't the recipient of the MacArthur fellowship and being honored at the Kennedy Center is beyond me. As far as I'm concerned, If you're serious about jazz guitar, uhhh.....let's see.....There's Eddie Lang, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, (I would include Les Spann, but whatever), Sonny Sharrock, Vernon Reid maybe, and BERN NIX. This guy is a motherfucker.
