Its a bit in between - It does end after you finish the storyline, but there's quite a lot of room to explore. I think it is better then Oblivion or Fallout because of the athmossphere and story. However, it does not have those RPG stats Oblivion or Fallout have. Its a free-roam shooter.
It has little in the way of side quests though. Although part of the storyline is optional.
If you get it, make sure to get the "Complete 2009" mod as well, as it makes the game look awesome ;).
@198cvx Fallout is good. Its got a large world nice weapons, nice armor but it lacks that post apocolyptic feel you can get from other games like metro 2033 or stalker which are a bit smaller.

@qwerty200ful I agree. Metro 2033 was polished pretty well, with the bullet currency, gas masks, and creative weapons. If only we were allowed to visit more of the different stations in the underground network, or explore above in Moscow more, Metro would probably be an amazing FPS/RPG.
ok personal scariest for stalker is lab x18 it was 2am in the night i was playing for the first time and if i even heard a little thing even my footsteps i was scared xD btw the big monster in a big room in x18 the monster is that fat that it cant come out of the room so you can just go in so it would spot you and then come out of the room and start shooting it all it can do is its aoe :p
At the end of the level you will be attacked by a controller... it's way scarier if you haven't met one before... and at that level all you can do is run.

The first time I encountered one of these was in dark valley. There where two dead bodies in a building, along with one live when. When I got close to the bodies, I heard a howl, and emptied the clip in my Obokan (from the hip, no crosshair, which meant not many bullets hit) and then battled hand to hand (or knife to claw) and lost.
First time I played this, I heard him, and saw him go invisible, but he didn't attack me at first so I went on my way. Then he snuck up behind me and scared the shit out of me.
I was in the Garbage section, just finished killing the bandits coming out from the other end, and walked face first into a bloodsucker. I don't remember what happened next, but he was dead and I wasn't :D

Install Complete Mod 2009, wait until it's completly dark and go to this building complex in Yantar without nv, just with flashlight. If you play on high details, nice resolution, in dark room and with headphones - you'll shit your pants.
If there willl be a controller too, you'll have a great opportunity to experience an instant heart attack.

you want to know scary, i was playing call of pripyat, i was climbing under a bridge, just got a propane tank in the middle of the night hopped down and and out of fucking no where i get smacked by a bloodsucker which for some reason can turn completely invisible on CoP, also i could not run because i was almost carrying the max weight, so it turns out i had to camp away about 6 in game hours under a bridge for daylight because of how bad he scared me
There are scarier things,like having crap armor,a pistol and no way out whell having a pseudogiant charging you,i find things that can squish you and destroy all your time invested in playing the same level very scary,auto save doesnt do special favors so its best to save every tiem you come close to strogn oponents.

the only monster I run away from now is the freaking Poltergeist. the bastard that pulls your mind out of your body then thrusts it back in. you want to know scary, i was playing call of pripyat, i was climbing under a bridge, just got a propane tank in the middle of the night hopped down and and out of fucking no where i get smacked by a bloodsucker which for some reason can turn completely invisible on CoP, also i could not run because i was almost carrying the max weight, so it turns out i had to camp away about 6 in game hours under a bridge for daylight because of how bad he scared me

There are scarier things,like having crap armor,a pistol and no way out whell having a pseudogiant charging you,i find things that can squish you and destroy all your time invested in playing the same level very scary,auto save doesnt do special favors so its best to save every tiem you come close to strogn oponents.

I defended myself against waves of blind dogs and pseudo-dogs, fleshes..with a knife! I seen 2 zombies on my way to Skadovsk, stalker camp.Took 1out with sniper, but ran out of ammo too.. Sprinted to its dead body and stole a shotgun. It was damaged but it shots..Took 2. zombie by headshot fro behind and ran to Skadovsk.. I've played this game for first time and that was horrible..And that was luckily in evening! Ive arrived with dark. I wouldnt survive it at night.. This is true.THX. pls rate!

First, a frag grenade flew through the air... BOOM! A BLOODSUCKER dissappeared... then he was near me suddently... 2 bullets from shotgun has left the gun (cuz i did not have more xD) And, when light and dark were changing and pulsing during the blowout, I have emptied 2 magazines from IL-80.. 5 bullets stood im my last magazine... For sure i shoted him again and again.. BUT I WAS OUT OF AMMO!!! I had to travel through half of a zone with 6 bullets to sniper rifle with low accuarcy... read pt.3!

In CALL OF PRIPYAT I searched for cover cuz blowout was incoming, and got to nearest
building. Luckily it has underground. Well, it was only 2 meters deep, more a cellar than a underground. And my stealth bar filled, that means that im not alone. And when scary sounds filled the cellar, I sighted a !BLOODSUCKER! in room near me (9 metres max). He knew about me but he wont attacked. His eyes glowed to the dark... So i attacked..

the only monster I run away from now is the freaking Poltergeist. the bastard that pulls your mind out of your body then thrusts it back in. Not to mention makes you see fake things like monsters of other types running at you and making your head spin. as soon as you hear that whistling sound and your vision goes all wobbly you know theres one around.
