I don't remember this from when Tommy was current, but this song is really cool. Everbody talks about the briliance of Townshend as a writer, Entwhistle on the bass, and Moon on the drums, but Daltry had a very versatile, expressive and strong, kick ass rock voice. I read something quite a few years ago about the Who being overated, the brilliance and uniqueness of the four members, and the fact that they were in their prime better live than in studio. Who Numero Uno
this is the most insane tune. Listen how Townshend creates a down and gritty feel but every guitar is as clean as can be. Listen to the intensity but its all presented totally mellow. Listen to how sparse the guitar parts are. The whole thing is a tour de force. Sick.
Roger really can sing a razor-line...like to have seen him and pete collaborating in the studio.."It goes like this, Rog..".."Let me 'ave a go at it then.."
@BasketballLonghorn That may not be the best idea. I mean, I love The Who and especially Tommy, it's one of my favorite albums, but that film might be the single worst representation of anything ever. I mean, it's hilarious, that's about it.
I like how this song works as both a song about Ms. Walker trying to get through to Tommy, yet at the same time it works as a song directed at vain, narcissistic people who just don't seem to respond when someone reaches out. I love this song.
Daltrey's voice was as rock n roll as they come

@TadRapidly “Smash the Mirror” should have been lengthened, expanded and turned into its own single.
Great music and arrangement, combined with the turning point of the Tommy story. Great stuff, as was so much of that album.

This is my favorite song from Tommy. I remember being 10 years old and lip syncing this in front of the mirror in my bedroom.

@penebrew if you want to smash your own mirror go to my channel and see what Tommy is all about. Start with "self-image". ;-)

I liked the movie, but the album's beyond it. Jack Nicholson singing "Go to the Mirror!" wasn't the best idea.

I love the drama in this song!
Every notes paints Tommy.
An John's brass work at the end paints the effects of the broken
mirror so well.
