guys, there are just many great musicians and its nice they all have a different voice and a different accent, thats what keeps the music interesting. Chick Corea probably likes this fact.
weckyl is a medium,a psychic, look at that...wooten,with all that percussive style he has, worked with fine drummers,but...i bet he found his soulmate there
@englishbobful That's just his style. He's not selfish at all. He's one of the most humble people you'd ever want to meet. Your comment is just your opinion-preferably not your musical preference. Why else would Chick have him in his band?
Nice vidz, i agree with the previous comment, it's no sense talking and comparing the different bass players joined Corea, because all of the are unique and give different sounds and groove.
We can watch and enjoyed or not, the personal taste is a important and everyone need to respect it, for me I like this performance :-)
Both Wooten and Patitucci are awesome on bass. Wooten can do the slappin and poppin or the smooth groove stuff. Patitucci can play a mean bass as well.
Why are we bothering to compare two humble, intelligent and amazing musicians. They both have separate approaches to music, yet share the same ideals for the bass. Victor Wooten is flashy in his solo's ytsp2 but behind the music, he's 'In the pocket, which is exactly what John does.
John Petitucci & Victor Wooten are inspiring Musicians, and inspiring Human Beings.
This is Chic Corea's Electrk Band and he can have whom ever he wants.....build a bridge and move on......
i would really love an audio track with the whole gig do anyone knows if they recorded something? on cd? or dvd? or at least something at studio with this formation!
I do not believe Victor Wooten is of this planet. I saw with play with Mike Stern and Dennis Chambers and I met him after the show and I asked what planet are you from really... Normal people are not that amzing and creative... he would not tell me.
wow chick corea indeed incorporates the BEST musicians on the planet in his band.. vic wooten is as amazing as john patitucci. more with slapping obviously, but just as good. and also gadd, colaiuta and many more omg..
They're both JP & Vic r versatile musician's so it's not exactly about funk. They both have outstanding vocabulary ... & they're some of the best in the world right now with a couple others.
No prob BK, friendly musician banter. Earnest discussion makes any video page better. Your free to express your opinion, and by all means say whatchu feel dude.. Tell ya what, id luv to see Vic and JP go at it one day. They both hav stuff that neither of them can do. JP is a badd mofo.
gotta disagree with you brooklyn, and this other person cocobass. I liv in NJ and i saw the Chic/Elektrik band show at the blue note BOTH years in a row. They came in 06 for a week around Cmas and again in 07, both times with VicWootn instead of JP. Victor definitely did not sound out of place. He held the pocket down brilliantly and played smooth complementary lines and never came out of place. Then he dominated his solos and did his slappity thing. Please believe he can handle that gig.
I played after them at the blue note. This is not a complete representation of what Victor did during his solos. I was impressed that he did pull off mostly fingerstyle solos over changes. Not the usual one chord slap solos like the one we hear now. He soloed over Got a Match and some tunes with hard changes. He was playing good lines and was right there with everyone on the stand. Actually Victor anhilated the gig when I saw them. John Patitucci is the man though.
i just saw another video of Vic playing with the Electric Band and its not that he cant manage it but he really does sound out of his element. like here he's fine and pullin his usual stellar stuff but at other times people like gamble just had him beat. so in agreement, Patitucci is the man.
Gamble can't do what Vic does - Vic doesn't do what Gamble does you're trying to compare apple and oranges think - 2 sax players John Coltrane Sonny Rollins - whobeats whom - just damn good musicians.
You took what I said the wrong way. I only compared Gambale to Victor in reference to how they go about playing in the Electric band, its not even like 2 sax players cause these guys play two different instruments altogether. I just don't feel Vic is in his element here so he isn't playing as awesome as usual, where as Gambale is playing in a group he has known for a verrrrrrry long time so he seems to know what he's doing.
Would you agree that if Vic had been playing for a long time with the Electric Band - youmight have said he fit it just fine. Wouldn't that be the same with Gambale if he was part of the Flecktones???
yeah I think so too, maybe Patitucci can't come with Chick's tour. But in a Wikipedia article for CCEB, vic is listed as the current member. Btw, it's an article without any references.
....gotta side with you on this one. Soloists with Chick usually flow, keeping the music moving along. Yes, Vic is a badass, but he sounds like a stand-in in this video. I'm not into is "farty" tone, either...
what is wrong with you people... a few tapping notes and john is gone to the trashcan? WTF!
I think John has a deeper musical approach. Maybe he is not as spectacular as Victor but he fulfills quite perfectly the role of the bass in the elec band. Do not misunderstand... Victor is outstanding, but shut the fok up when you say that Victor does a better job, a lucid musucuan would understand this is not true at all.
@ytsp2 Talking about musical approach; you should read "The music lesson" by Victor Wooten. I enjoyed that book. Its a "novel" of some sort that brings nice ideas about music in general. If you're a musician, you must read it. It'll change your relation with music.
I have to agree. I have always said Victor Wooten to me is a technocrat when it comes to bass. He can kill chops, slaps, licks and doubles, triples, wins on showmanship points and what have you....but John has a VERY groovy approach to his bass playing....his first solo album made me fall in love with his style. So different strokes for different folks, but John is better in MY books. Victor is a really a slap bassist's lover...not all bass players love his style.
By a few tapping notes do you mean some of the best, most complex, and most expressive rhythms ever played? To wooten, the bass can be used as a percussion instrument - and he is a master.
I have to agree with you on that point. Victor brings some good dose of Funk in the Electrik Band and a large dose of modernity. Chick Corea's one of my baddest influences, and with all due respect to Pattitucci, Victor is just MIND BLOWING !

I think that both bass players are outstanding. John Patitucci is a better upright player though. Heard him on Michael Brecker's album Pilgrimage.
Could somebody please type in a list of the current band members of the Chick Corea Electrik Band?
