Right on! I have been getting some of my first dislikes, and I've been getting some comments at my channel that show that the people making the comments don't even understand the video. And I don't even who does it or why? That's right. Should I disable ratings? I've heard that dislikes even improve rankings on youtube.
@shaysreblog I'll tell you this, I am unconcerned with rankings. i prefer to interact with the people who watch my channel. I have been disabling the ratings for awhile now. If people want to watch my videos they will. Good luck and do what you are most comfortable with.

Great rant. But if you think this place is bad for "Thumbs Down" you should check out Yahoo Answers "Rock & Pop" section. I've been an on/off regular for the better part of 4 years or so. Some of the trolls there have multiple accounts just for the sole purpose of thumbing down other users answers several times. I used to let it bother me...but now those little thumbs have become part of the scenery...I've come to expect them, the same way I expect to find piss on the toilet seat at Denny's :)

As for the Rock & Pop section at Yahoo Answers TD's? I've been there since the sites inception...so the "right of passage" thing doesn't apply there. Just a bunch of losers living in their parents basements, no doubt miserable with their own lives. I seem to notice a drop in "Thumbs Down" once school commences though, so that says something right there. Also, I think some may be jealous of your knowledge/collection.
You should disable them man. I feel you %100. Dislikes send me on a trip through my insecurities and faults to try to find out why someone would do that.

Couldn't agree more with you Dereck, I watch quite a few vids of people with video games collection and there's always people posting stuff like "get a life" etc. Just makes me wonder who's got the more pathetic life - someone spending time doing something they enjoy or someone finding videos of things they're not interested in just to leave dislikes and insults. I think the source of this is the culture which has spawned x-factor, pop idol etc in which people feel that everything in life is a 10 second audition that they can dislike without there being consequence for the people involved. Particularly when disliking or ridiculing something is encouraged by these shows. I think that the internet and the ability to like or dislike is at heart a democratic process, but it is ruined by the negative forces that result from this culture. PS. love your videos!
Sadly, anonymous rating has been around for a long, long time in the media. Even the MPAA (to take an example), is the only agency besides the CIA that has anonymous employees. What does that say about the transparency of the rating process?
Where is the accountability? I do agree with you. I think YouTube, in the hopes of making interaction easy, have overlooked REAL interaction a bit, and made it possible for people to abuse the current system to boos views, charting and more.
all great things-concepts-people etc. are disliked by a minority (or the majority) so to be disliked is to be in great company :) hitting the dislike is like: not enjoying a record or a book & getting rid of it, as one hadn't acquired the taste or need for it. then later finding urself picking it up w/ much more cherish than ever. also, they same someone you did not like at first, will become a better friend than someone you liked all along. strange but very true. i never like enduring it:)
I couldn't agree more - I've never hit the dislike button in all my time watching YouTube videos. I sometimes see negative numbers on some VC members posts and literally stare at them in disbelief. If someone goes to the time and trouble to make a video, which you don't necessarily agree with, then don't disrespect them by hitting "dislike" - just close your browser and move on to something else.

Dislikes are great for hate videos. The reason why people "dislike" is the same reason why they make fun of others- it makes them feel better about themselves.
there actually should be more dislikes when you think of how many random drunk buffoons or kids who check out your vid by accident .Some people might just say fuck records and click dislike or whos this black dude and click dislike.So many variables .Just wipe your ass with that!

Well said. You're definitely right about the link between the dislike button and capitalism. Obviously Google/Youtube uses the dislike button for marketing and to effect people's search results. It also sets up a competitive atmosphere as users compete for views/likes/subscribers/higher placement in search results/etc. and then they tie the money into it for people who agree to have ads in their videos and get revenue from each view. Luckily the VC doesn't play that game.
Great video as always but don't let those shitbags get to you. As you can see, this video has 1 dislike already just to poke at you. Their will always be these cockroaches in life. Just ignore them because they will never last.

Most people in this country and the vc as well can't help quietly insulting your intellect. Be it through a joke or a back- handed compliment. It's just in human nature to poke and prod until you get a response. My experience in the vc has been lukewarm, it's makes me not want to be part of any community. I entirely agree YouTube should only allow dislikes with comments explaining why. I miss the 5 star system; this dislike bar is only asking for trouble. Facebook doesn't have it so why does YouTube! The dislikes don't come from the VC people, I bet its random people that stumble upon our videos. The more people that watch, the more the chances you will get one, which is a shame, because they have nothing to do with us, and we have nothing to do with them but we share the same space.

So what I've come to realize is that with these types of people & specifically in the context of the VC is that it's really not personal or about something they genuinely dislike about you or anyone. Clearly nobody here is doing anything wrong or offensive but rather just having fun and being positive. So that's why to us it's baffling why anyone would dislike or be bothered by what we're doing. BUt again it's not about that, it's about a miserable human being who enjoys fucking with others..
It really is disturbing that people behave like this. And like you, my parents raised me well & I actually do grasp the concept of what common courtesy & respect for others is all about. I once hosted some songs I recorded a few years back just to see if people like my music and all I got was thumbs down and disliikes without any comments or reasons why. Hi Dereck, You have raised a very valid point and one in which most would agree. I've worked in I.T. for over 25 years and have been on the internet for almost 20 years. I'm still unsure whether the internet and mobile technologies are making the world a better place or if they are just degrading our lives more quickly. They make us far more vulnerable than we may be equipped to understand. Especially those of us of who are a little older and enjoyed happy lives before this all came along.
I agree with you Dereck about the major idea behind this video. In my opinion it must be a youngster who didn't feel enough attention when making his own videos, or somekind of a weird frustrated little guy who like spending his days being negative... Well said. You're definitely right about the link between the dislike button and capitalism. Obviously Google/Youtube uses the dislike button for marketing and to effect people's search results. It also sets up a competitive atmosphere as users compete for views/likes/subscribers/higher placement in search results/etc. and then they tie the money into it for people who agree to have ads in their videos and get revenue from each view. Luckily the VC doesn't play that game.

Most people in this country and the vc as well can't help quietly insulting your intellect. Be it through a joke or a back- handed compliment. It's just in human nature to poke and prod until you get a response. My experience in the vc has been lukewarm, it's makes me not want to be part of any community. I think when you put yourself out there alot, the so called funny and observant try hard to listen to any little misstep. Jealousy and unoriginal thought are easy to express, I've made a video

You speak the truth Dereck! I occasionally get dislikes and it's not nice to see a song you took time to upload have a big red mark of negativity on it. I entirely agree YouTube should only allow dislikes with comments explaining why. I miss the 5 star system; this dislike bar is only asking for trouble. Facebook doesn't have it so why does YouTube! Great video as always.

The dislikes don't come from the VC people, I bet its random people that stumble upon our videos. The more people that watch, the more the chances you will get one, which is a shame, because they have nothing to do with us, and we have nothing to do with them but we share the same space.
We need to be better then they are, and just ignore them, don't feed the trolls, but your rant is completely in order.

And of course that's drawing attention to them which is yet another thing they crave. So with that I've just learned to just completely disregard and not acknowledge. And I gotta say that's worked for me in the past. The more I responded the more it persisted. I stopped it IT stopped.

So what I've come to realize is that with these types of people & specifically in the context of the VC is that it's really not personal or about something they genuinely dislike about you or anyone. Clearly nobody here is doing anything wrong or offensive but rather just having fun and being positive. So that's why to us it's baffling why anyone would dislike or be bothered by what we're doing. BUt again it's not about that, it's about a miserable human being who enjoys fucking with others..

It really is disturbing that people behave like this. And like you, my parents raised me well & I actually do grasp the concept of what common courtesy & respect for others is all about. Which is why when shit like this happens our natural response/reflex is to try to explain the obvious to people, like hey that's not cool, or that's no way to treat people, etc.. In the hopes that maybe they'll come to their senses. But again some people you just can't help.

I totally agree with you Dereck! I also hate it when people think they have to press disike on any video just to bring smthg down. I once hosted some songs I recorded a few years back just to see if people like my music and all I got was thumbs down and disliikes without any comments or reasons why. That was very frustrating and I was hurt and angry bout this shit! I became more insecured than before about my musical talent. and I deleted all these vids quick as I could. GO TO HELL DISLIKERS!

There is a person in this VC that will remain nameless. But there was a comment said in the last 10 seconds of the video that made me so angry that I wanted to confront the person and just ask "what makes you think like this"? But instead, I hold me peace, for now I am a little minority in a sense but it was not by choice and when I hear anything 'hateful' it really makes me ill. This is why I am in school again. I feel like I can make a difference in the future. Dereck, thank you~

Hi Dereck, You have raised a very valid point and one in which most would agree. I've worked in I.T. for over 25 years and have been on the internet for almost 20 years. I'm still unsure whether the internet and mobile technologies are making the world a better place or if they are just degrading our lives more quickly. They make us far more vulnerable than we may be equipped to understand. Especially those of us of who are a little older and enjoyed happy lives before this all came along.

I agree with you Dereck about the major idea behind this video. In my opinion it must be a youngster who didn't feel enough attention when making his own videos, or somekind of a weird frustrated little guy who like spending his days being negative... Anyway, the best thing to do is just to leave it like this I guess, because in my opinion such persons don't even deserve a second of your time or a tiny bit of your attention.
