the play version is just as sad, if not more. the musical script bears no resemble to the play script except the plot line..I'm not criticising it, I'm just saying.

I think the audible gasp is Iwan as he's putting the gun to his mouth to do that last breath before the gunshot that you don't hear. Regardless this scene is beautifully executed. Iwan is a great actor. It's amazing to see how diverse he is in his roles

@rubetherainbow SA isn't a musical where the characters break out in song with each other. Each performance is an inner-monologue of each character, it's not really part of their discussion. The songs are their "rock star" moments, their chance to break out an rebel against the oppressing adults in the play. So the microphones kind of help symbolize that. (Also, DDS/BW is my favorite - Notice how Moritz and Ilse never look at each other. They don't connect. Hence his suicide. It's so tragic.)

Actually, he only burns the paper in the Off-Broadway version. They took it out when it went to Broadway for some reason =\

I think maybe because if the match doesn't light then it ruins the whole scene D:
