ive driven almost all these cars and i haft to say that the gti does win. the 1/4 mile difference between all these are small and same with track times. the thing the vw has though is great ride, good interior, and looks amazing... plus resale is high too

Seeing as I use the street but still like a sporty, usable comfortable car, with good MPG and low price, the GTI takes it for me.
But in all honestly, the GTI, WRX, SS, Mitsubishi (as an EVO) and Speed 3 are all good. I would be happy with any of those. I could never live with the Dodge or Mini, yuck.

I completely agree with Alphabuck, this comparison was good up until the end. I am a 2011 WRX owner and would have been completely cool with the older Cobalt taking top honors. This is ridiculous. The GTi did not win any of the tests and isn't particularly impressive. There are other cars with more power, other cars with better handling, and other cars that are more comfortable on the road.

You can't just compare cars solely on specs, what largely matters is what its like to drive the car, the "driving experience". unless your using the car only on the track, specs don't matter much especially since these cars are very similar. Top Gear loves the GTI as well, but this review is just stupid, you assume the winner will be the best of all the tests, the review should have went more in depth with driving experience rather than only tests.

I'd say either the MS3, SS/TC or the WRX. ive driven all the cars in fact im bout to purchase a new car and im still deciding weather or not i want the MS3 or 07 STI. and my bro has the SS/TC coupe and thats fast and my buddy owns a GTI, and he said hes always getting smoked by the MS3 ans SS/TC so i havent considered the GTI at all

VW build quality is just better than anything else in the segment... and if you're only up for racing, you could as well just buy a used sports car...

I was under the impression that this was going to be a performance winner vid. The GTI is best all around but "not the quickest car on the street or track." That's really what I wanted to see......oh well.
This guy was so uninspiring with his tone and voice inflection that I would have fallen asleep if it weren't for the hot cars! t's almost comically predictable that he chose the GTI. I've driven the GTI, Honda, WRX and even an evolution but there was one clear winner for me.
At the end of the day I bought a Victory Red Cobalt SS Turbo and I'm lovin' every minute of it!
I think the subaru is the best all around. More verstility and has more power then the GTI. The cobalt might have alot of power too but the interior quality is garbage.
Looks like we know who sent the check. What a lame review. First, I don't think some of theses cars are under $25k. So the winner would be the Speed3, since I know it is $23k for the GT (fully loaded). Colbalt looks like a POS cut it does offer a lot of performance. GTI would be third after WRX for refinement, but nothing as far as performance. So this shootout is a complete failure and a joke!
Honda better get their asses in gear, the competition is killing them now. Once upon a time the Si was the top dog sport compact, now it's getting destroyed by Cobalts LOL.
Now that Honda has discontinued the S2000 they may want to concentrate on the next Si.
@AgileMJOLNIR Actually si's have never held a match performance wise to chevy's small cars dating back to the first Si, dating back to 84 or 85 when chevy came out with the Z24, and the closest was 99 Si vs Z24 was close with a slight edge on the Z24 very slight, and when 2005 Cobalt SS supercharged came out there is no comparing, and not even close with the turbo version after 09, now Gm is focusing on the camaro.

I like how the pick the shitty VW, v-dub fan boys. It's performance to the rest is sub-par, and wouldn't call it handsome. The rear bumper of the gti kills me, it's like they just decided not to design any thing special, and just leave the bottom unpainted. Interior could use some work too. But in terms of driveablitiy it is good, but that's it.
I love my Hondas. I own an 06 Si and would never buy a Chevy....however, that Cobalt is impressive. If I remember correctly it is the cheapest of this bunch as well. I don't care if my ass is sore and the dashboard melts in direct sunlight, getting up in an M3 drivers as in the corners for 20G's is real bang for the buck.

I have to agree, this video was awful, but I do think that he was praising the cobalt too much. The cobalt cant even touch the gti in interior quality or handling. I guarantee most people would pick the gti over the cobalt. I think the tests were bullshit though. Top three should be gti, wrx and mazda 3.

I have driven both. That's why I bought the Cobalt SS. Better car in all areas, better value. Don't know why they selected the GTI. It doesn't make any sense.
ive driven a cobalt ss, and a mazda speed3 and I own a caliber srt4.. and in my personal opinion, the caliber is the better car out of those 3.. the caliber is alot faster than the cobalt..

This has to be one of the worst reviews I have ever seen. The people who buy these cars will agree with me. What a terrible ending, and knowing my VW history, the transmission would blow up within 10k miles, like mine did TWICE.

Well uh they all were fast as fuck but the speed limit is 70 and nobody really goes to the track so the winner is: Wolfsburg edition volkswagon Jetta, because VW paid us to......I mean it has a really nice interior, so uh yeah the Jetta wins fuck all these real cars they don't have da plaid seat covers and that makes a car the best.

If they had talked more about the interior and build quality, then I could definitely have seen it not being the Cobalt. I test drove that thing and, while it's got plenty of power, everything inside feels cheap and plasticky. There were pieces of plastic trim threatening to come off on a new car at the dealership.
Car magazine love to create controversy, and that's exactly what they did by nominating the Gti the best sport compact. It's for all us nippon car fans to get to flame/talk about motortrend; there is no bad publicity.

performance wise the best one was the wrx and then the cobalt ss. If you are looking for a pure performance then get the SS, the 4 door in the video is horrid, you can get a coupe and lower it and it will look decent, back to the topic, performance wise the SS wins its rated at 241 whp and 240wtq and comes with alot of goodies like premium pioneer sound system, brembo brakes, launch control and more. Plus $500 worth of mods gets you over 300whp and about 320wtq, full bolt ons they make 340whp.
Yea its true 500 bucks will get you about 300whp with just a catless downpipe and an intake with a good tune, and full boltons for about $1,200 will get you about 340-350whp and like 400wtq all on stock turbo and motor, just full bolt ons. If owning a car doesnt mean dick size then the SS wins just because of its performance, the wrx is nice and a fun car no doubt,but would cost too much to brake into 340whp range. Thats all, not bashing, all cars were great in the video btw.
additionally, the srt-4 caliber was a bad move. but then again, dodge never was my choice of vehicles. I do however respect mazdaspeed 3's, and older (neon) srt-4's. and in this video, the ralliart is a great affordable performance car, but i would hands down choose the WRX over all of them. and towards my last comment, i dont have anything against GM, i just dont like cobalts. GM has the corvette, which is a no brainer. but cobalts are like corollas, built for economy. not racing.
i must say something here. i see alot of cockiness in all of you new TURBO cobalts. first off, before these cobalts were turbocharged, they had a hard time beating a stock nissan 240sx, haha. and in class with all the other late model (2002-2008) sport cars like srt-4, mazdaspeed, SI, GTI, spec v, GT, GTS, ect. the SS was at the bottom of the list. in every way. i have driven probably every late model sport/performance car to date. my summary is, turbo or nonturbo, a cobalt's still a cobalt.
All I know is that when I race dudes with these new turbo Cobalts that say "I'll beat your stupid Mazda" I crush their hopes and dreams when I race them. If there are any other Cobalts that want to get crushed by an MS3 let me know.
GTI is better than the camaro in my opinion... the camaro is clumbsy and the car is made of plastics like a toy... i ordered 2010 camaro 2ss with the rs package, and told them to keep it when it got in... its crap..... now im trading the gti in on an audi s5

If by quality you mean the brembo brakes, sport tuned suspension, new strong but lightweight chassis, ESC, TC, ABS, and LSD, etc.. and if by interior you mean the beautiful comfortable bucket seats and RPD which displays and lets you work on everything you need to know on a TC car, the pioneer sound system, leather wrapped steering wheel with control buttons etc.. than sure lets listen to the idiot that hasn't tried one yet.

This guy was so uninspiring with his tone and voice inflection that I would have fallen asleep if it weren't for the hot cars! t's almost comically predictable that he chose the GTI. I've driven the GTI, Honda, WRX and even an evolution but there was one clear winner for me.
At the end of the day I bought a Victory Red Cobalt SS Turbo and I'm lovin' every minute of it!

Looks like we know who sent the check. What a lame review. First, I don't think some of theses cars are under $25k. So the winner would be the Speed3, since I know it is $23k for the GT (fully loaded). Colbalt looks like a POS cut it does offer a lot of performance. GTI would be third after WRX for refinement, but nothing as far as performance. So this shootout is a complete failure and a joke!

Honda better get their asses in gear, the competition is killing them now. Once upon a time the Si was the top dog sport compact, now it's getting destroyed by Cobalts LOL.
Now that Honda has discontinued the S2000 they may want to concentrate on the next Si.

@AgileMJOLNIR Actually si's have never held a match performance wise to chevy's small cars dating back to the first Si, dating back to 84 or 85 when chevy came out with the Z24, and the closest was 99 Si vs Z24 was close with a slight edge on the Z24 very slight, and when 2005 Cobalt SS supercharged came out there is no comparing, and not even close with the turbo version after 09, now Gm is focusing on the camaro.

I like how the pick the shitty VW, v-dub fan boys. It's performance to the rest is sub-par, and wouldn't call it handsome. The rear bumper of the gti kills me, it's like they just decided not to design any thing special, and just leave the bottom unpainted. Interior could use some work too. But in terms of driveablitiy it is good, but that's it.

I love my Hondas. I own an 06 Si and would never buy a Chevy....however, that Cobalt is impressive. If I remember correctly it is the cheapest of this bunch as well. I don't care if my ass is sore and the dashboard melts in direct sunlight, getting up in an M3 drivers as in the corners for 20G's is real bang for the buck.

I have to agree, this video was awful, but I do think that he was praising the cobalt too much. The cobalt cant even touch the gti in interior quality or handling. I guarantee most people would pick the gti over the cobalt. I think the tests were bullshit though. Top three should be gti, wrx and mazda 3.

If they had talked more about the interior and build quality, then I could definitely have seen it not being the Cobalt. I test drove that thing and, while it's got plenty of power, everything inside feels cheap and plasticky. There were pieces of plastic trim threatening to come off on a new car at the dealership.
Yikes.

The Cobalt SS had one of the best 0-60 times, set the best skid-pad and figure-8 times, went on to have the fastes track time, and was described as having "an athletic chassis".
Then, out of nowhere, BAM! Gti wins?!? Now, I like the Gti... but the results of this "test" seem, well, almost random. It's like the editor went "hmm, let's throw 'em for a loop".

performance wise the best one was the wrx and then the cobalt ss. If you are looking for a pure performance then get the SS, the 4 door in the video is horrid, you can get a coupe and lower it and it will look decent, back to the topic, performance wise the SS wins its rated at 241 whp and 240wtq and comes with alot of goodies like premium pioneer sound system, brembo brakes, launch control and more. Plus $500 worth of mods gets you over 300whp and about 320wtq, full bolt ons they make 340whp.

Yea its true 500 bucks will get you about 300whp with just a catless downpipe and an intake with a good tune, and full boltons for about $1,200 will get you about 340-350whp and like 400wtq all on stock turbo and motor, just full bolt ons. If owning a car doesnt mean dick size then the SS wins just because of its performance, the wrx is nice and a fun car no doubt,but would cost too much to brake into 340whp range. Thats all, not bashing, all cars were great in the video btw.

additionally, the srt-4 caliber was a bad move. but then again, dodge never was my choice of vehicles. I do however respect mazdaspeed 3's, and older (neon) srt-4's. and in this video, the ralliart is a great affordable performance car, but i would hands down choose the WRX over all of them. and towards my last comment, i dont have anything against GM, i just dont like cobalts. GM has the corvette, which is a no brainer. but cobalts are like corollas, built for economy. not racing.

i must say something here. i see alot of cockiness in all of you new TURBO cobalts. first off, before these cobalts were turbocharged, they had a hard time beating a stock nissan 240sx, haha. and in class with all the other late model (2002-2008) sport cars like srt-4, mazdaspeed, SI, GTI, spec v, GT, GTS, ect. the SS was at the bottom of the list. in every way. i have driven probably every late model sport/performance car to date. my summary is, turbo or nonturbo, a cobalt's still a cobalt.

If by quality you mean the brembo brakes, sport tuned suspension, new strong but lightweight chassis, ESC, TC, ABS, and LSD, etc.. and if by interior you mean the beautiful comfortable bucket seats and RPD which displays and lets you work on everything you need to know on a TC car, the pioneer sound system, leather wrapped steering wheel with control buttons etc.. than sure lets listen to the idiot that hasn't tried one yet.
