OGG is excellent, I love it. Even sounds better than MP3, which I no longer use. I use MKV for video, which is also open source and just as good, if not better, than avi, mp4, rm, and the like.
But you have to emit that h.264 is very smart, but evil... They tell everyone to use there stuff and how great it is and how they don't have to worry about any patent stuff because it is so far off in the future. But before we know it it is 2016 and they are raking in the cash.
I've been using ogg for a while and love it. To bad the support isn't great for it.
In the original spec Theora was the format for html5, however apple pushed the FUD that Theora is format with uncertain patent issues, so no codec was actually specified. Since the change Apple has been pushing h264 as their html5 codec.
Youtube uses h264 for their flash players so switching to html5 is as simple as removing the flash player and letting Safari or Chrome decode it natively. Chrome can decode both Theora and h264, but Apple is standing behind their Theora position.
They pushed back the pay day on H264? Didn't know that. I'm sure it's because HTML5 + Theora are just gaining ground. Charging for it's use now will just be the shot to the foot.
I don't know how things stand now, but the last detailed comparison I saw showed H264 as a superior codec compared Theora... in terms of file size vs. quality. Hopefully Theora can close the gap soon.
Ogg vs. MP3? I find Ogg the better codec, but most audio players do not support it... even some running Linux...

I totally agree. Linux is doing so much right but they have a ways to go in the movie realm

Does blip stream with On2 VP6? That is a proprietary video codec!
Laoch111 2 years ago
Yes, but blip also will host any video format you want for your viewers, such as Theora. Plus, I believe you can remove the FLV files from your page.
arthursucks 2 years ago
I see. Thanks for clarifying that. Is it unlikely that YouTube will allow people to host Theora videos sometime in the future?

yes, but so far they're using the H.264 format in HTML5 instead of Theora.

I definitely need to start paying more attention to the HTML5/H.264 stuff. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

The Ogg Vorbis format is amazing. IMHO, a 128 Vorbis sounds better than a 192 Mp3. Of course Vorbis is a lot younger than Mp3!
arthursucks 2 years ago
yes, it's a clear win for Ogg... Don't understand why manufacturers do not include support for it.

awesome vid.
tis a worry of mine too.

Excellent idea to host the OGV version on Blip. I am in the habit convert of converting all of my video and audio files to OGG/OGV.
Peace. ^_^

Format wars... Thanks for the heads up, it sounds like that could turn sour really fast...
