@nukaiser If you don't feel like battling mobs a lot dig holes with a shovel in the way you wanna go. You will be safe if you stay in the hole.

My guess is that you build yourself one of them Shovel doohickeys, use it to not only pick up sand for personal use later, but dig two holes somewhere you don't care about, getting you some Dirt that you could use to fill those HOLES IN YOUR ABODE.
