It seems in terms of psychology the no. 1 motivating and success factor is self-belief. Does that make him, or the Gracies the 'greatest? No, but realistically, a large portion of the top fighters in most, if not all weight divisions are BJJ trained, and employ those techniques, but ground and pound brings the audience...

brian talarek is the man. he came to memphis a couple of years ago and gave a seminar where i took classes. he's very helpful. he even said i had a great jab. which swelled my head until 2 days later when i got kicked in the liver.

Royce used striking in the early days, he would throw feint kicks/punches to go for the single/double leg to take it to the ground; also strikes on the ground to soften the opponent up into exposing arm/head for submission
he had to go to denmark to learn what every thai boxer/boxer in the world knows.The reason he had no power before is because he never trained with a good striking coach.He still has no power.I think its too late for him to learn.

but he surely trained in mma(JKD)
and yeah, he did do a lot of grappling training but it wasnt enough to compete with Carlson in a strictly grappling match.
