Sublime ! in memory of my best friend Birmo, we were SD Freeks ! he is sadly gone now ! so I wrote a book for him, just to keep the memory alive. I made him a Detective Inspector in London England, unravelling a gruesome murder, (in real life he was actually a beer salesman but dont spoil the plot) Anyway Birmo solves the case, (sort of) your gripped already aint ya ? e-mail me at richred27@hotmail.com - soon to be on Kindle

@deanculvert Dude you know it's all downhill when a pap-artist like timbaland is cited as some godhead ground-breaking producer, I mean please.........me, you and the other real music lovers are gonna have to dig real deep & I mean deep for that particular rich seam!
I am hooked on this song... it gets better and better with every listen. I agree props should be given to Carolyn Leonhart she adds that special touch to the song.
Just saw SD at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA, they were outstanding. Outdoor amphitheater that seats only 2500, Fagan and Becker never sounded better. Carolyn Leonhart and the other two female vocalists were at the top of their game as was Jon Herrington. In the jazz world, Carolyn Leonhart has been compared to a young Ella Fitzgerald in terms of pure talent and voice.
The harmony and interplay between Fagen and Leonheart starting at 2:12 ('symmetrical and clean') is simply sublime. And people said Fagen couldn't sing. Pah! They blend well together.
@SaxyDan54 yes symmetrical and clean. Glossy and cool. Black and smooth, shimmering and elegant. I was looking for Negitive Girl with that dark beautifull xylophone passage......
Killer tune. Two brilliant smart-asses (Becker and Fagen) serve up their indictment of the public's addiction to all things fake, and ridicule our demand that reality be "symmetrical and clean." Great lyrics, touching on several double standards. Great music, too. (In other words... typical Steely Dan.)
*sigh* I wish I could say I liked EMG as a whole, but there's so many sub-standard tracks that I just can't bring myself to. Even this track (possibly my favourite from the album, along with Godwhacker and Lunch with Gina) doesn't quite meet the heights of their other albums. Two Against Nature was better, but still had too many samey tracks. That being said, I absolutely love Morph the Cat.
i've always loved this song and now i'm reading the lyrics; be good my three-times perfect ultrateen. animation born of real life, concepted, pitched, storied, recorded, distributed, for the edification of the many who listen. to become aware of the mechanics and beauty of creation.

Probably best of latter Steely Dan tracks - Sublime melodies especially in middle eight :)

Absolutely nobody does slick production, übercool harmonies AND sardonic wit like Steely Dan. Pure class!

@SaxyDan54 Mr. Fagen has and Rick Danko of 'The Band' had those non-voices that you either love or hate ... and I just love 'em.

Had Donald written this song about a Gentile girl, he may have entitled it Schicksaleen. Perhaps.
