@sg4ea Yes, it very well could fix the power drive issue. The power drive unit relies on one of the two belts that fit this vacuum part #'s 38528035 & 38528034. Both ship for free from GoVacuum dot com
This is a great video! Thanks so much for posting. I was able to change the belt myself. I'm in the DC area, so when it's time for a new vacuum, I will definitely come by!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! You just saved me an $85 repair bill at shop. There was a burning smell coming from my vacuum, and after watching this video, I was brave enough to open it up and inspect the 2 belts. They both looked fine. Then I checked the bearing (?), that metal rod inside the roller brush....total wrapped up in hair and dust and the roller was not spinning freely. When I cleaned it all up, the vacuum worked as good as new! You guys rock!
Yippee! I changed both belts, and the roller brush myself! =) I've always hated this vacuum, because of the costly repairs. Hopefully, I can repair it myself, until I can afford a new one. Thank you Eric!
@MisPinksunrise Oops.. thanks CHRIS!! Sorry. My vacuum worked for 2 minutes, then had that burning smell. It's christmas, so i'll figure it out tomorrow maybe...
I have a Windtunnel 2 (UH30065) and have replaced the Agitator/Brush Roll Housing (part #92001286). When I removed the "valve arm and agitator" from the old housing, it came off in 3 pieces. There are 2 plastic pieces and a spring that go together to make the part that connects to the cover. I can't find a diagram for reassembling them so I can reattach them. A pic or clear diagram would be all I need to reassemble. Can you help? I love the belt video, but I could really use your help with this.
@mglennx Absolutely! I'm happy to try and help you with Hoover WindTunnel 2 Repair Issue. I've uploaded a parts diagram of that model showing you how the parts attach I can't put a link in this response, so I'll have to email it to you through your YouTube account.
@GoVacuums I bought a new drive belt and a new flat belt, but the new belt is too loose and wont catch the brush to spin it. If I turn the vaccum on, and take up the slack of the drive belt with the faceplate off, it catches and the brush will spin, but obviously I can't vacum with my finger in the drive belt. Any ideas? I double checked the part number to make sure I didn't buy the wrong belt. 3M is the brand of the belt that I got at Lowes, but it's supposed to be compatable. Any ideas?
@Ayplus Just use a regular hand screwdriver. The screws are very easy to remove and the drill isn't necessary. They just used it in the video because they could.
@GoVacuums : At 1:17, note the white "gasket" wrapped around the left side of the brush roller. I am servicing exactly the same unit, V-belt is horribly loose, OLD OR NEW, and it's because whatever that gasket is doesn't exist on my system. I go to parts sites and they don't list that part at all. What is it and how do I get one?
@whcernan I have the same problem with loose new v-belts. I think you just have to replace the brush roller. I haven't tried it yet, but every single other part of the system looks great. My brush roller looks great too but its the only thing I can think of. Shame, the brushes on it are fine. Note that there is a workaround - pull out enough screws to let the main plastic come loose that covers it all from the top. Then let the tensioner slip past its stop. It will put more tension on the v-belt
Hey guys! I replaced both belts, and I still have a loose brushroll. I disassembled everything and nothing looks broken. The only way I could get the brushroll working properly was if I re-assembled it so that the brush tensioner wasn't resting on the stop that lets you disengage it. Well now the tensioner has much more travel and it pushes against the V-belt, so I can vacuum my carpets just fine, but I can't disable the brushroll with the switch anymore. Also the brushroll look fine. Ideas?
Darn, I read the directions and tried to put the new flat belt on. Not enough strength to get it on. Found and watched this vid. Fantastic! Tried rolling it on. Still not enough strength but then I'm in my late 70's and a female. I JUST CAN'T DO IT!
My Windtunnel's belts are fine, but it has been giving a burning smell recently and smoking. I checked again, rewatched your video and saw you spin the brushroll. Our brushroll still has long brushes, but spins only if you force it.
I'm waiting for the brush to come in at the vacuum store. Once that's fixed, the next project is getting the on/off switch to work again (i need to look at the link you commented on previously)
@itradio first take out the brush. on the sides. unscrew the two ends. bearings are now viewable. carful there is a washer under the bearing. remove bearing. check the endcaps for wear and tear remove hair. if plastic is melted replace brush. if not go to the vac shop and ask for brush roll bearing for hoover. total cost, about 4.95 a set dont pay more than 6 bucks for a set. reinstall new bearings and screw back together. boom. your done.
Thank you !! Didn't know anything about my hoover - the belt had broken but had no clue about it and was about to bring to shop before seeing this - bought a $5 belt and it works great again. Appreciate it.
@batman6777 Thanks Batman! lol. I know it's the motor shaft, but I assumed the average Joe would better understand Metal Pin, then Motor Shaft. Thanks for watching!
I have a Hoover Self-Propelled WindTunnel Bagless vacuum. The problem I'm having is that the vacuum will not turn off using the on/off switch. I took the self-propelled portion apart and saw the when the switch is turned to 'off' the mechanism doesn't move to the off position. Is there anything that can be done by me, or does it require I take it in to a repair shop?
@tommymack55 Hello, thanks for your support, and watching our GoVacuum video series. Here's a link to a repair tutorial that I've written showing you how to access the on / off switch for your Hoover Windtunnel. Hopefully this helps you;
@tommymack55 just take out the 3 screws holding the handle on the top. then pull it back. there is the lever which moves up and down on the switch. easy fix just put some tape(not alot) and that lever and cover the rounded shape on the end. turn the switch to off position. reattach. screw in a viola. problem sovled. cost for repair 2 cents.
Guess it was my weak hands that couldn't get the wide belt back on, but then, I'm 64. Anyway, looks like you might have cross-threaded the screws putting them back in. Better to back them up until they "click" then go forward. Otherwise, thanks for the help!
Thank you for the video, but I still have a problem.
I took a look at my vacuum, and my power drive belt seemed to be stretched out. I went to the store and got a new belt, and I put it in. This one seemed to have the same problem. All I had to do was pull it taught a bit manually and it would spin the brush. Unfortunately I can't pull it taught manually while it is running, and it wont stay taught. Any help would be appreciated.
@Mithwada Thanks for your comment. The belt will not tighten unless the head of the machine is in the vacuuming position, or in other words when you step on the handle release pedal, at this point is when the belt tightens around the roller brush. It's also best to replace both the flat belt and the v-belt at the same time. If you are looking at the belt, make sure the head is pushed down and this should fix your problem.
@Mithwada Your vacuum has a two belt system. You will need to replace both belts in order for the brushroll to spin. It keeps stopping because the Hoover V belt is worn down on the sides and when the brushroll contacts the carpet it stops spinning. Change the Hoover V belt and your problem will be solved.
Good video... do you guys do snow blowers, too? (Just kidding...)
Seriously, very helpful video for someone who can deal with simple maintenance/repair work and see it all in front of you via the video (with the parts numbers) is a big plus.

I have the Hoover Wind Tunnel 2 , It has a burning smell after running for about 2 min. the brush is still spinning and i cleaned the filters but it is still doing it any sugestions?
Great video, but I have a related problem. It seems the idler pulley for the v-belt is not doing it's job resulting in a loose v-belt. If I'm right, it should be spring loaded and articulating up and down, correct? The pulley spins, but the arm it's mounted on doesn't move and I can't get the hood off to see how or if it's working. The Carpet/Hard selector on top doesn't seem to be engaging anything, just sliding back and forth. Any thoughts on this?
Thank you so much for posting this video. My husband wanted to take our vacuum to the repair shop, but I now feel confident that I can fix the problem myself.
Great DIY. I'll be ordering my parts later on today. My belts started smoking the last time I used it. Today I did a quick vacuum and there was the smell and then the smoke! You guys got it going on.
I am delighted to have watched this excellent video, changed the belts and roller on my wind tunnel and saved almost 100$ in service and parts. Thanks soooo much. I feel like I have a new vacuum!!!!!!
Thanks so much! I went through the process on my own before finding your video and I couldn't figure out why it still didn't work! Was SO relieved when you showed the old belt's worn/stretchiness, GREAT VIDEO!
Greetings. We will see if we can get a video done on this repair. The dirt sensor is actually a smaller laser type instrument that is in the hose of the vacuum cleaner. When dirt passes by this laser, it turns red indicating that the machine is picking up dirt. If yours is continuously showing red then you must have some small dirt or debris stuck on the laser in the hose. You'll need to pretty much disassemble the entire vacuum, and I would recommend to take it in to a repair shop.
My husband and I fiddled with our vacuum for half an hour before I suggested we try youtube. We had out screwdrivers, needle nose pliers, you name it...trying to get that damn belt on. I want your address so I can send you some cookies. :)
Just wanted to say thanks. I just replaced my Hoover Wind Tunnel belt--without the manuel-- thanks to you guys! I didn't realize you could slip the belt under the pin...I kept looking for a way into the motor casing...so thank you!
Great Video - thanks. How about another one showing how to adjust the self-propelled cable controller and/or replacing the actuator arm, if necessary. Also, a video on how to replace the handle release/lock. TNX
I have replaced my belt just like shown but when I try to vacuum the belt keeps slipping off or smoking, is there something I'm doing wrong? It also squeaks, does it need oil?
It sounds as if your roller brush may be going bad, or the pulley that the belt attaches to might be bad as well. The best thing for you to do would be to take out the roller brush, and hold the brush with your two pointer fingers, and try spinning the brush, if the brush doesn't spin, then you'll need to replace it, as the bearings have probably gone bad.
My wife ran over something and the brush does not spin. It is not a self propelled this time. Is it the Belt? Is there a reset? We didn't have it for more than a few weeks. What can you do?
Great video. I replaced both belts, but the wide belt smokes. What's up? I believe both belts are the proper replacement. Could it be that the brush is not turning freely?
I took the endcaps off the brush, cleaned out all the crud, and put one drop of oil on the threaded shaft of the (one, not two) endcap that i could easily take off. That did the trick, and saved me - at least for now - from buying a brush.
How did that lubing the brush roll's bearings work for you? You should be able to easily spin the brush while your holding the end caps with your fingers. If it continues to smoke, you may just want to replace the brush roller itself.
Well, maintenance wise this is a retrograde step on earlier designs. There is one belt and that can be replaced without a screwdriver simply by pulling unclipping the belt from the spindle, undoing the catches and pulling the roller out from under the machine,
I've seen time and time again when these service guys use those DRILLS as screwdrivers they just wind up shortening the lifespan, or striping out the threading on plastics. You should never use powertools like that on that sort of equipment, god they're so powertool happy! But thanks for the slap-dab!
Hello, this is a great video. I was scared of replacing the belts and have been using the vacuum for about 3 years now. After watching the video I think I can do it. However I was wondering do these vacuums need any kind of lubrication like oil in or around the motor somewhere?
Hey, thanks for the video. I have one question, did you mix up the belt names. I was thinking the thick one, that is on the pin, is the power drive belt, and the small one was the brush belt. I just replaced the brush belt and that is spinning nice, but the auto-drive is not working.
Hi Eric, Another major problem with this vacuum is the actuator arm assembly, hoover part 43143046. This arm is the arm that actually engages the self-propel motor, when you push the handle forward and backward. What happens is that when the machine is picked up using the handle, instead of the carrying handle on the back, it strips the self-propelled wire out of this actuator arm. With the vacuum reclined, look at where the upright part meets the base of the vacuum, you can check the arm.
I worked on my belts just last night, again - and still don't have it fixed. I liked my old Hoover much better. Still had belt problems, but didn't have screws to mess with or finger gymnastics to perform. Was much easier and quicker to change. This design is not an improvement.
Cool! I hope to see more tips and videos. One that I would recommend would be the Tech-Drive setup on the Kirby G-series vacs as far as rebuilding them perhaps or even just overall maintenace. Thanks
found out quickly what i needed to know...i have a diff model hoover but i needed to make sure that that belt pin doesnt connect to anything to keep the belt on, looks like it doesnt....thanks
does this help with the self propel problem? the problem with my vacuum is the self propel stopped working. will changing these 2 belts fix that?

Mithwada 1 year ago
@Mithwada Thanks for your comment. The belt will not tighten unless the head of the machine is in the vacuuming position, or in other words when you step on the handle release pedal, at this point is when the belt tightens around the roller brush. It's also best to replace both the flat belt and the v-belt at the same time. If you are looking at the belt, make sure the head is pushed down and this should fix your problem.
GoVacuums 1 year ago
@Mithwada Your vacuum has a two belt system. You will need to replace both belts in order for the brushroll to spin. It keeps stopping because the Hoover V belt is worn down on the sides and when the brushroll contacts the carpet it stops spinning. Change the Hoover V belt and your problem will be solved.

It also squeaks, does it need oil?
mikesgirl8304 2 years ago
It sounds as if your roller brush may be going bad, or the pulley that the belt attaches to might be bad as well. The best thing for you to do would be to take out the roller brush, and hold the brush with your two pointer fingers, and try spinning the brush, if the brush doesn't spin, then you'll need to replace it, as the bearings have probably gone bad.

Thank you!

009988joe 2 years ago
How did that lubing the brush roll's bearings work for you? You should be able to easily spin the brush while your holding the end caps with your fingers. If it continues to smoke, you may just want to replace the brush roller itself.

Well, maintenance wise this is a retrograde step on earlier designs. There is one belt and that can be replaced without a screwdriver simply by pulling unclipping the belt from the spindle, undoing the catches and pulling the roller out from under the machine,
So much for 50 years of development.

I've seen time and time again when these service guys use those DRILLS as screwdrivers they just wind up shortening the lifespan, or striping out the threading on plastics. You should never use powertools like that on that sort of equipment, god they're so powertool happy! But thanks for the slap-dab!
ChicaWolverina 2 years ago
My comment, too. There's nothing worse than plastic threads, except using a power driver on the screws that go into them!

Thanks for the info . I was ready to toss it on the curb for trash pick up tomorrow , but now I am confident I can fix it .

Hello, this is a great video. I was scared of replacing the belts and have been using the vacuum for about 3 years now. After watching the video I think I can do it. However I was wondering do these vacuums need any kind of lubrication like oil in or around the motor somewhere?
yah1248 3 years ago

Very well done. Thank you for the tips!

Cool! I hope to see more tips and videos. One that I would recommend would be the Tech-Drive setup on the Kirby G-series vacs as far as rebuilding them perhaps or even just overall maintenace. Thanks
