The stock could have been cracked internally already or if there was a large amount of recoil it could have caused the crack. However, reloading is a practice that requires a lot of experience and precision. Even if someone has been reloading for years there is still a greatly increased chance of a serious accident. If my budget is constrained then I simply reduce how frequently I shoot.
