The Pokemon version did very well simply because its Pokemon, just like how the Dragon Quest version did well in Japan. Publicity means everything, followed by often limited and/or biased first impressions. Its the reason why we have so many crappy games based on popular TV series and movies, which, despite being crappy, sells well. People played/bought the Pokemon version simply because its Pokemon; they neither heard nor care about the genre before hand.
damn the psp and the wii why they got the best rpg's keep like this atlus ur making square enix look stupid and boring.but release a persona game for ps3 for god sakes
I'm actually playing the english translated version of this game for the PSP. As to the Mystery Dungeon subject, listen to Coolbaseball911, it's called Roguelike. Just because Pokemon mystery dungeon is a more notable name DOESN'T MEAN that pokemon came first. There's a hell lot of games that came before that.
Roguelike games and Disgaea are two different genres, you can't even compare them. dgknight500, Thank god your comment was hidden, cuz you godmann don't know a thing about gaming.
dont get me wrong, nuthin bad about turn base games back in the early 90's gotta love the classics! but I donno it for me is such a drag with new games its just to out dated for my liking ah well...
@xLionBoSS Nor Pokemon did. "Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer" was first released for SNES, 1995. BUT... first Mystery Dungeon I know was "Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon" 1993... Just an information: Pokemon Green (first pokémon game) was released on 1996.
Was going to buy this until I realized they dumbed this down even on Normal, and there's no "Hard".
Seriously, is it difficult for Atlus to understand that the original experience of Shiren includes your items AND levels being reset completely if you fail?
There is a reason why the Shiren series is popular in Japan.
Well,as for RPG standards,it's just what it is.....an RPG game.(not saying RPG games are inferior compared to the rest.On the contrary,I love them.Just don't know how to elaborate.)Anyway,
I'd rate it
9/10 for graphics(remember,wii!)
7/10 for battle system
6/10 for dungeon exploration
8/10 for town movement
(you can run in town unlike in a dungeon)
though this is just my rating based on this video clip.
I'm just happy that there's a mode of difficulty that makes roguelikes a bit more accessible. I've got my copy pre-ordered and fully paid for, hoping that I fare a bit better in this iteration than I did the DS Shiren.

@Vespene You're wrong. Atlus included a "Hard mode" in the game, but you have to "unlock" it first.

Random generated dungeons/levels are not fun! The only exception is Disgaea!

Bland game is bland.
stickyjoe131 2 years ago
Roguelikes aren't bland... although personally I think Shiren is a pretty weak series of roguelikes. Crawl is better.

@realityminded
I agree with you now that you mention it. Crawl is a pretty good game as far as rougelikes go.
