at 1:26 it sounds like a frequency filter. it's a low pass filter (meaning that the high frequency sounds are filtered out) giving it that gloomy and muffled deep sound. it's used in hip-hop sampling quite a bit to get the bass lines out of samples. they must have just been strumming their guitars with a low pass filter on a guitar pedal or something.
