The true magic of this song is that it tells a story. The story of the human race and our existence. The beginnings, the rise and fall, the triumphs and defeats and the end. God works in mysterious ways. Blessing this gifted band with the idea to write this heavenly song. Its too bad that the human race had to wait until 2005 to hear the song that wud define our existence so beautifully.
the lyrics in this song are actually all icelandic, and they are beautiful..well if you understand them... but its true that in many of their songs there are madeup lyrics :)
obviously they are not in engilsh, there was someone talking about the lyrics being only made-up words, and I was saying that they are not made up, but icelandic. ..and I know my spelling is probably very bad, english is not my first language, but I am learning ;)
@dianaellen7 If you look up the interview about this song, you will find that this song's lyrics are a combination of icelandic and a language created by jónsi. Either way, it's beautiful, elegant, and most of all, euphoric and inspirational.
Yes the song is incredibly beautiful :) But I am icelandic, and I can understand every single word, so I dont think his language is in this song..but if it said so in the interview...
im pretty sure most of their songs is just a language in itself. i heard that when u buy the albums where the lyrics are usually in that little booklet, theres just lines under the songs, so u can just write what u feel it is to u.
For those who don't know, most of Sigur Ros' songs aren't even in Icelandic. They literally just make up sounds to express how they feel because sometimes words can't get feelings across. So they just let their mouths open and whatever comes out comes out. I'm not even joking. Google it, do some research if you don't believe me.
In all honesty i DONT want to know what the words mean.. When i listen to Sigur Ros the melody just tales my mind somewere else and i almost make up the lyrics myself!
I think for those who don't speak Icelandic the impact is greater. Mainly because if you don't know what he's singing about, the words could mean anything you want them to.
I looked up the lyrical translation for "Ny batteri" (New batteries) and I found that some of the words are somewhat suicidal...? I might be wrong. But my point is that I would have had no idea from listening to the song without knowing the language.
@fluffybunnyshoez i listen to sigur ros at work and everyone says how shit it is because you dnt know what they are singing about , every time i tell them the beauity of there music is you can relate to every song, because you can deside for yourself what the song is about, to some people this song ( hoppopolla) might make them cry bring back sad memorys , and to some like me it puts the bigst smile on my face no other band in the world can do that with every song on every album simply amazing !
Its strange... in not having an understanding of the lyrics this should completely disconnect me from this song, but the sheer power of the music ensures this song means more to me than most. Just a beautiful piece of music.
the number of emotions this song conveys is unbelievable. its a strange mix of sadness, joy, loneliness, love, emptiness & most of all hope. incredibly beautiful
Brosandi=Smiling. Hendumst í hringi= spinning round and round Höldumst í hendur=holding hands. Allur heimurinn óskír= the whole world's a blur./ Nema þú stendur= but you are standing./ Rennblautur= soaked/ allur rennblautur= completely drenched/ Engin gúmístígvél=no rubber boots./ Hlaupandi inní okkur= runing in side of us./ Vill springa út úr skel=want to erupt from a shell./ vindurinn= the vind.
All of the lyrics on ( ) are sung in Vonlenska, also known as Hopelandic, a constructed language of nonsense syllables which resembles the phonology of the Icelandic language. It has also been said that the listener is supposed to interpret their own meanings of the lyrics which can then be written in the blank pages in the album booklet.
"Hoppípolla" (Icelandic for "Jumping into puddles")
The lyrics for Hoppipolla are mainly in Icelandic, with some lines sung in Vonlenska ("Hopelandic")
ur explanation is intriguing specially when u said 'a constructed language of nonsense syllables', is that even possible? it's very interesting. and since i don't speak icelandic, can u tell me what's the whole song mean? it's ok if u wanna share ur interpretation cuz i just need to know what it means, it's a beautiful song.
dumbass, this was one of the only songs on the album that they sang in icelandic. The rest is that made up language they use. But this song IS icelandic.
ok here goes. yes hoppipolla means hopping puddles but that's not "really" what the song is about. The song is about overcoming adversity, ie not letting a rainy day get you down. the last lines "eg fae blodnasir, en eg stend alltaf upp" (i get a bloody nose, but i always get/stand up.) as for vonlenska/hopelandic it's not a fuckin language, those require actual words and grammar. humming notes to vocalize with the melody is far from that.
the first word in this song is brosandi = smiling, next phrase höldumst í hringi = hold hand in hand in a circle, next phrase höldumst í hendur = hold hand in hand......I can go through the whole song word for word translating from Icelandic to English but because of the 500 limit I can't and I won't, it's already been said that this song is sang in Icelandic not partly but completely, I don't even understand why you people are arguing with native Icelanders on this hopelandic subject
These songs couldn't be sung in English because there's nothing to translate. The vast majority of what he's singing is just made up words, not icelandic. Different people hear different words, each listener has a different interpretation.
Also, Majikfish you are a complete tit. You can't be elitist if you don't know absolutely basic and crucial details about the band. If you know what the 'lyrics' mean in english maybe you should let Sigur Ros know because you know more than them.

I dont speak Icelandic but Sigur Rós is just as powerful..
I think that the emotion that they show in their songs translates as well if not better, than language itself...
It's beautiful
