I dont care about the enviroment. What difference makes 1/500.000 person using a hybrid car, and the rest petrol/gas car ? Shit, searching for a dodge ram 5000 that fucks the entire world, period. Thats for sure, a CAR.
@nuduakj The process of mining, transporting (mostly by train), and burning coal to generate electricity, distributing it on the power grid, and ultimately charging the battery of an electric motor is by no means more "effective" (I think you meant efficient) or "clean" than modern gasoline powered car engines.
We simply decided to elect leaders who put "clean" power above motor efficiency, but once the extraction/conversion process of the fuel is considered, one is no cleaner than the other.
So how can an electric slot car be called a "hybrid" when it has no gas engine? Hmmmm. Nice use for a Sizzler set box, a pair of diecast Priuses and a Carerra Go! 1/43 scale set BTW. ;)
Funny & Sad - maybe better with a couple of Tesla's !!
BUT Fact :- manufacturing 1 prius + disposing of "trade in" causes more harm to the environment, than keeping your old gaz guzzler going for the rest of your days. Please don't ask for proof - do your own research - it's all available on the interweb!
Not to mention all the rare earth metals needed to produce a hybrid - of which China is sitting on 90%.
Hybrid cars aren't the answer. Hydrogen fuel cell based vehicles are. A Prius only makes sense in the city. If you try to drive it on the highway like a normal car you'll be lucky to break 35mpg, and a diesel can beat that any day. Not to mention the pollution involved in making all those batteries.
Short term solution: Drop the diesel tax and import efficient diesels from europe.
Long term solution: Hydrogen fuel cell cars using hydrogen produced with power from molten salt thorium reactors.
A "hybrid" is basically any 2 systems combined to work as one.
The problem is when people hear the word "hybrid" they instantly think of the Prius and other electric/gas hybrids.
This is how the F1 Hybrid will work: "Instead of capturing the braking force as electricity, the force instead will be stored in a rotating flywheel as kinetic energy."
This is hilarious to me because my dad has a Prius... He always drives to conserve as much energy as possible, which generally means "not accelerating".
@ping6uod It was a HYPERBOLE for crying out loud. I guess I could have said "not accelerating quickly", to avoid people taking me completely literally.
P.S. You astound me with your knowledge of physics. You mean something must ACCELERATE to transition from a state of rest to a state of motion? You just blew... My... Mind...
whats wrong with saving gas? of course the prius is not the perfect solution, but aleast its a means to conserve oil before we can find a way to replace using oil as a way to get energy. people talking BS on the prius are the same people who are too naive that we have an ENERGY CRISIS on our midst.
@ping6uod Yes, the Prius is made by Toyota FOR Americans, so Americans can feel superior. And why would you want to replace fossil fuels? A 1972 Chevy Silverado V8 uses exactly the same amount of fuel as a brand new Prius when they're parked. I would bet there's no one thing which has had a more profound impact on our automotive energy use as when gasoline neared $5.00/gallon - it's not that oil is becoming scarce - it's that we consume too much oil. I hope your mother gets cancer and dies.
Depends what country you live in. Automakers build many of their vehicles in the country they're marketed for. It avoids the cost of exporting and rids them of the importation tax. In the end, they can charge the same, yet have a greater net profit.
For the past decade, the Prius has not been solely made in Japan (not the US.. though).
Think the Accord (Ohio) and Camry (Kentucky) are Japanese-made for the U.S. market?
Yeah, the Prius isn't that slow and hell, you can get 51+ mpg going 70-75 mph* if you have a flat enough of highway. You got to use hills and slopes to your advantage else you'll be pretty slow.
I won't lie though, I miss my Altima. Throw a hill that will make a Prius suffer and it will handle it like a boss.
Also, zero emission and zero carbon footprint it is not. Well, maybe the new model.
*I bet it can maintain 51+ going faster but... I would like to maintain my good insurance, thanks.
The strange thing is, nobody seems to know that electric cars (or even hybrids) have the potential to be way stronger and faster then normal cars. But the car makers "clock it down" so they can boast about their batterylife :(
@nuduakj: True that. And Toyota did make a Prius that went-full out on the Nevada Salt Flats years ago. But try telling these muscle car addicts that.
@nuduakj because when you drive it that fast it runs out of battery in 20 miles, and then you're screwed out in the middle of no where with no place to plug into. plus, they can't bring you a container of more electricity, while they could bring you another few gallons of gas
@nuduakj The stranger thing is, nobody seems to know that electric cars run on electricity which, in this country, is made by mining and then burning coal. GREEN FTW!
Electric motors have more power but the big problem is battery life. If the tame electric motors are getting 100 mile range, then a high performance one wouldn't get anywhere...
@MSEuropa explain exactly what you mean..., I have one, and its gets 51mpg on the highway, and thats actually better that what the window sticker said...
@fivefortysix The new model can. I heard it can go 50 miles on a charge. Not sure if you can go full electric on the highway since its currently capped at 25 mph, less when its raining. Its an interesting concept, a plugin hybrid. It be nice to speed up on the highway then maintain freeway speeds on electric.
Why do all Prius people only focus on MPG? My truck gets 15 mpg and I don't care because I'm not poor and I can afford to buy as much gas as I want.
