This was and still is one of my all time favourite albums, wish I was privileged enough to meet her. Awesome and timeless. Will never tire of playing it.
A wonderful woman, more beautiful in person. An incredible talent with a stunning voice -- the depth is unreal. That there aren't more Ellen Foleys speaks for how special an artist she is.....
Absolutely fantastic. Both the song and that bell-like colour of her voice when she belts it out - the spirit of Ronnie Spector comes across. As the saying goes: they don't make 'em like that anymore...
ik en jij, waar ben je ik mis je zo mijn liefdee, mijn liefste i hou van jou toch ik kan ikknan echt zonder jo , mijn liefde is en zal blijven in mijnn bestaan voor atijd in mijn bestaan
Geez this lady made Meats album a legend..Its Meat,Foley, Rory Dodd on back up that makes this an icon in music history. And Jims writing of course!! Karla did the Australian tour, and we didnt know any better unless you peeled of the little sticker over Ellens name in the tour progam to see it was Karla singing not Ellen...Both great singers..
@jordsan1 You think she mimed when they played live? I'd like to see any evidence you've got of that and an explanation of how they got it to sound different every night!
@jordsan1 On the promo videos for BOOH, Karla did lip-sync to Ellen's album vocals. On tour she sang live. And damn well. Check out the Old Grey Whistle Test performance in 1978 of "Paradise by the Dashboard LIght". Karla is also killer in the Rockpalast 1978 performance available in the DVD "Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell, the Original Tour." Buy the non-USA version. Karla is terrific in "Johnny B. Goode" and "River Deep, Mountain High", not available on USA DVD. Check out Karla's Youtube channel.
Pure Genius,How on Earth this didn`t caterpult this Lady on to Better Things is beyond me,first 2 albums she released were criminally ignored,Still one of the Best solo girl Artists of her Time.........
What a statement about the eighties -- good and bad -- that a singer like Foley could end up a footnote in music history, rather than occupying a chapter or two. She was indeed better than Debbie Harry, with the vocal power of Pat Benatar, and a great deal more style and panache.
She said at the time she wouldn't tour with him or go on stage because she didn't like the way he groped at her and the way he kisses in Paradise by the dash board light. Instead they got someone in to mime her. Such a brilliant voice.
i loved her then and i love her now , i would love to take her to dinner and ask her how come she never did more stuff , she is amazing voice presence everything
She teaches somewhere in New York at a rock and roll school that was the inspiration for that Jack Black movie. Although she's 57 years old,she still is beautiful and she still has a great voice.
I love the bit at 3.40- after the instrumental break - where she flips back her hair and jumps aggressively back to the microphone for the huge finish.
Absolutely brilliant song and album, stood the test of time, classic songs live forever. I saw her in 1979 at The Venue in London. Even touched her leather clad leg.
I was 16 when I bought the "Nightout" album in 1979 and this song still gives me goosebumps. Undoubtedly one of the albums that made a deepest impression on me during my teenage years. And this performance by Ellen Foley is second to none!
Masterful singer, her voice is like Emmylou Harris, but with the power of Aretha, with ultimate finesse, control and confidence. More than a great ballad singer, a really great musician. So interesting to look at this style of performance captured before these moves had become cliche.
That is what's cool about ms Foley... that she isn't that well known. I like that whole mystique that surrounds her. It would've been predictable if she blew up into a superstar and became an instant sexsymbol and all that... Boring!
I never heard this on the air-waves in the US. I came upon this artist from a compilation (Epic records). Love her!!! I remember her vocals with Meatloaf and Ian Hunter and her one season appearance (before Markie Post) on "Night Court. I agree "Night Out" album...totally underrated.
I was living in Sydney when Night Out hit the shops. It was a brilliant summer and Miss Foley was simply the best thing to have happened in years!!!!!!!!!
So great to see Mick Ronson backing up this amazing Babe, Loved the album in 79 and still Love it Today. best song on the album " Night out", the album was written and produced by Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter, That is why it is so good, check out Ronson on

Hi Ellen, if people from the other side of the world try to get back to your performance after 30 years, it sure means you offered a lot of quality. And it is recognized. Cheers to you from Amsterdam!
Hey fans!! There's a new Ellen Foley recording. She sings a song called, "It Was Magic," on an album by Fred and the Fredettes (she's one of the Fredettes). The CD is called, "The Last Days of Rock 'n' Roll" and it can be found on iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby. Yay!!!
This KILLER song should have shot to the top of the charts in every country! It is one of the most beautiful and FROM THE HEART songs that I have ever heard. Written by Ellen Foley and Fred Goodman. SUPERB! Ellen Foley is the REAL THING! She is performing live again, and I am longing for a new cd. Each of her three albums are completely different: all are gutsy, strange, beautiful & perverse. NEVER cookie-cutter. Check 'em out. Pity this edited version doesn't have the STUNNING ending.
i just remembered her name out of the blue! i was trying to remember her name for 3 decades! i had this recored that had her on it but coulnt think of the song! o wow i just went back to me teens!
ex-Bowie & Mott the Hoople Guitarist Mick Ronson on guitar solo and Ellen is backed by The Ian Hunter Band featuring Mick Ronson on this vid, plus her debut album- Nite Out
Incredible song which sends shivers up my spine every time. The power voice of Ellen Foley. Who remembers her version of Robert Palmer's "Johnny and Mary"?
"Nightout" was one of THE albums of my teens. I could come home from school to a empty house and I put "Nightout" on the stereo on high volume to get out my frustrations. Simply magic, and i'm so thankful for this video!
THe whole of this album was awesome. Stupid Girl is absolutely mental, and the rest are great tracks. Unfortunately she shacked up with someone from The Clash who produced her second album which frankly was a load of cack. The result - obscurity. I saw her in a documentary last year and she was just a middle aged Texas housewife with bad teeth - think i'll stick to the memory :)
Another great song from your list "We Belong" i rattle my car windows as iam driving through the Adelaide hills to this on my cd player...very cool mate...
I so wished she was going to be the new Blondie. Too bad she didn't stick around very long. Many thanks for posting this- it was by far her best song.
