  • Very good song and a splendid voice

  • This was and still is one of my all time favourite albums, wish I was privileged enough to meet her. Awesome and timeless. Will never tire of playing it.

  • A wonderful woman, more beautiful in person. An incredible talent with a stunning voice -- the depth is unreal. That there aren't more Ellen Foleys speaks for how special an artist she is.....

  • My neighbor looks like her ... woww what a woman

  • Absolutely fantastic. Both the song and that bell-like colour of her voice when she belts it out - the spirit of Ronnie Spector comes across. As the saying goes: they don't make 'em like that anymore...

  • Please play "Phases Of Travel" by Ellen Foley at the request from Japan.

  • ik en jij, waar ben je ik mis je zo mijn liefdee, mijn liefste i hou van jou toch ik kan ikknan echt zonder jo , mijn liefde is en zal blijven in mijnn bestaan voor atijd in mijn bestaan

  • Makes me turn again to the end seventies.

    Great time and great music!!!

  • What power there is in her voice! Incredible.

  • what a voice

  • What a voice

  • Geez this lady made Meats album a legend..Its Meat,Foley, Rory Dodd on back up that makes this an icon in music history. And Jims writing of course!! Karla did the Australian tour, and we didnt know any better unless you peeled of the little sticker over Ellens name in the tour progam to see it was Karla singing not Ellen...Both great singers..

  • Mick Ronson produced, arranged and played in this album with Ian Hunter. And he plays BEAUTIFULLY in this song. Ellen Foley, what A VOICE !

  • Great singer and a great song

    I like it.

  • Where are you, Ellen Foley??? No voice comes close to yours!!!

  • omfg, what a voice this girl has...

  • @jordsan1 You think she mimed when they played live? I'd like to see any evidence you've got of that and an explanation of how they got it to sound different every night!

  • On the original Bat Out of Hell tour her vocals were sung by Karla DeVito, who was herself an excellent singer.

  • @stormynortherner:

Karla DeVito just mimed to Ellen Foley's vocals

  • @jordsan1 On the promo videos for BOOH, Karla did lip-sync to Ellen's album vocals. On tour she sang live. And damn well. Check out the Old Grey Whistle Test performance in 1978 of "Paradise by the Dashboard LIght". Karla is also killer in the Rockpalast 1978 performance available in the DVD "Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell, the Original Tour." Buy the non-USA version. Karla is terrific in "Johnny B. Goode" and "River Deep, Mountain High", not available on USA DVD. Check out Karla's Youtube channel.

  • Wow, three Lady Gaga fans.

  • OMF WHAT A 70'S FLASHBACK! I love the much underrated Ellen Foley!

  • Pure Genius,How on Earth this didn`t caterpult this Lady on to Better Things is beyond me,first 2 albums she released were criminally ignored,Still one of the Best solo girl Artists of her Time.........

  • What a statement about the eighties -- good and bad -- that a singer like Foley could end up a footnote in music history, rather than occupying a chapter or two. She was indeed better than Debbie Harry, with the vocal power of Pat Benatar, and a great deal more style and panache.

  • She was better than Blondie.

  • This is a voice filled with power

  • She said at the time she wouldn't tour with him or go on stage because she didn't like the way he groped at her and the way he kisses in Paradise by the dash board light. Instead they got someone in to mime her. Such a brilliant voice.

  • @ENGLISH244 I think the woman who mimed to Ellens vocals was Meatloafs wife.

  • Wow ... What an amazing voice...

Her refusal to tour with Meatloaf has to go down as one of the greatest blunders in music history..

    She coulda been a Goddess...

  • Holy shit , this is the chick form "Night Court" the t.v series?

  • @mikest468 Yup.

  • @mikest468 yup

  • one of musics all time classic songs by one of its finest singers

  • classic

  • If we could have harnessed all the power & energy she generates in this one performance, I think we could do without Saudi oil for a decade.

  • WOW, ELLEN FOLEY QUE DIVINA VOZ TIENES. TU Y BONNIE TYLER SON MIS IDOLAS.

  • WOW, SHE BLOWS ME AWAY.....CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I HAVEN'T HEARD OF HER!

  • this is such a beautiful voice.

    such power.

a voice that can make you cry.

  • Do you think she will ever come to Glasgow from Jimmy Main of the Four Hens Called Norman

  • i loved her then and i love her now , i would love to take her to dinner and ask her how come she never did more stuff , she is amazing voice presence everything

  • she played billie young on night court

  • She teaches somewhere in New York at a rock and roll school that was the inspiration for that Jack Black movie. Although she's 57 years old,she still is beautiful and she still has a great voice.

  • awesome voice when is she touring australia ???

  • I've seen Ellen Foley live in Stockholm, Sweden 1981. A wonderful concert.

  • she made bat out of hell, without her and meatloafs voices....wouldnt have been the same.

  • One of my favourite female rock songs! Ellen has such a great voice. I get goosebumpers from this song. Ellen, I love you.

  • I have to hear this at least once a week. It gives me a real boost.....

  • Oh yeah she can sing. She is a real star..

  • Oh yeah she can sing.

  • I loved Ellen Foley with Meat Loaf. I loved Ellen Foley solo. I loved Ellen Foley on Night Court. I guess I love Ellen Foley!

  • I love the bit at 3.40- after the instrumental break - where she flips back her hair and jumps aggressively back to the microphone for the huge finish.

  • luv ellens tunes

  • Absolutely brilliant song and album, stood the test of time, classic songs live forever. I saw her in 1979 at The Venue in London. Even touched her leather clad leg.

  • propably the best singer ever!

  • What a voice .......Wow !!

  • I was 16 when I bought the "Nightout" album in 1979 and this song still gives me goosebumps. Undoubtedly one of the albums that made a deepest impression on me during my teenage years. And this performance by Ellen Foley is second to none!

  • Masterful singer, her voice is like Emmylou Harris, but with the power of Aretha, with ultimate finesse, control and confidence. More than a great ballad singer, a really great musician. So interesting to look at this style of performance captured before these moves had become cliche.

  • Ellen Foley live on Countdown in 1979.

  • great song.

  • That is what's cool about ms Foley... that she isn't that well known. I like that whole mystique that surrounds her. It would've been predictable if she blew up into a superstar and became an instant sexsymbol and all that... Boring!

  • Wow!!

  • @Baskerville22 She is sensational hey!

  • @Baskerville22

Impossible to imagine that anyone else could do what Ellen does - with this massive song

  • One of the best rock performances - EVER!!

  • I never heard this on the air-waves in the US. I came upon this artist from a compilation (Epic records). Love her!!! I remember her vocals with Meatloaf and Ian Hunter and her one season appearance (before Markie Post) on "Night Court. I agree "Night Out" album...totally underrated.

  • I was living in Sydney when Night Out hit the shops. It was a brilliant summer and Miss Foley was simply the best thing to have happened in years!!!!!!!!!

  • Night Out is one of the most underrated albums of all time. Ms. Foley's voice is a true treasure!!!!!!!

  • she was my favorite singer in the past with one of her best songs... wonderful and big voice...

  • ellen is still fabulous and still beautiful :-) had lunch with her last year.

  • @machine1313 What did you have?

  • Brings back memories, I was 13 hearing this song for the first time. Really great

  • ellen foley is superb

if you don't think her voice is good, then you are just dumb.

    she is glorious talented.

  • So great to see Mick Ronson backing up this amazing Babe, Loved the album in 79 and still Love it Today. best song on the album " Night out", the album was written and produced by Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter, That is why it is so good, check out Ronson on

( Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert Part 9/13) paste this into search,

RIP Mick always in our Hearts.

  • im a 15 year old guy who is the starting running back on my football team. but this song will allways give me chills. What an amazing voice, it cuts through you like you were air

  • A great song by a little known performer . She should have been huge ....

  • One of my favourites forever.............

  • A brillian brilliant voice could never understand why meatloof edited her out of his film clips

  • Hi Ellen, if people from the other side of the world try to get back to your performance after 30 years, it sure means you offered a lot of quality. And it is recognized. Cheers to you from Amsterdam!

  • In parts has passages very similar to Eric Carmen's Make Me Lose Control

  • Like a Meatloaf song...

  • sounds kinda like Bonnie Tyler :)

  • Great, and what about Paradise by the dasboard light (180175). I think she is underrated

  • Hey fans!! There's a new Ellen Foley recording. She sings a song called, "It Was Magic," on an album by Fred and the Fredettes (she's one of the Fredettes). The CD is called, "The Last Days of Rock 'n' Roll" and it can be found on iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby. Yay!!!

  • This KILLER song should have shot to the top of the charts in every country! It is one of the most beautiful and FROM THE HEART songs that I have ever heard. Written by Ellen Foley and Fred Goodman. SUPERB! Ellen Foley is the REAL THING! She is performing live again, and I am longing for a new cd. Each of her three albums are completely different: all are gutsy, strange, beautiful & perverse. NEVER cookie-cutter. Check 'em out. Pity this edited version doesn't have the STUNNING ending.

  • So many young teenage memories to this song...sigh...

    Bitchin' voice.

  • I only knew her as an actress from her short stint on "Night Court".............who knew the girl had set of pipes like this............WOW!!!!!

  • I've always LOVED this song, but this is the first time I've seen the video of Ellen. Fantastic!!!

  • Lets hear it for the night;

  • Spector updated for '79: Hunter, Ronno, et. al., sounding great.

  • Oh, Ellen...and what a band (Lowe, Hunter, Jones, Strummer?...on that video...I mean...)

  • This brings back memories, my god this is good. I'm going to by her albums....

  • OUCH! Brilliant.

  • what a powerful performance!!!! it gives me goose bumps!!

  • my heart wants to stop beating....so beautiful.

  • This is so long a go! Goosebumps!

  • Fantastic; one of my favourite performers of all time, with great songs.

  • i just remembered her name out of the blue! i was trying to remember her name for 3 decades! i had this recored that had her on it but coulnt think of the song! o wow i just went back to me teens!

  • superrrrrrrrrrr

  • I used to have some of Ellen Foley on vinyl years ago. I'm enjoying a trip down memory lane, but can't find Thunder and Rain, :(

  • all three of her albums are available on CD

  • Thunder and Rain is available on iTunes. I think pretty much all her music is there.

  • She's one of my favorite classic female artist. To bad suddenly she disapear. I wonder what she's doing these days. Thanks for the video.

  • ex-Bowie & Mott the Hoople Guitarist Mick Ronson on guitar solo and Ellen is backed by The Ian Hunter Band featuring Mick Ronson on this vid, plus her debut album- Nite Out

  • Incredible song which sends shivers up my spine every time. The power voice of Ellen Foley. Who remembers her version of Robert Palmer's "Johnny and Mary"?

  • Nightout is one of my favourite albums. I even bought the CD years later. She is SO GREAT. Thanks

  • Awesome... Thank God I kept the vinyl!!

  • Things I don't understand.

    1. Chinese writing

    2. Why Ellen Foley isn't up there with the greats after a performance like this,

  • "Nightout" was one of THE albums of my teens. I could come home from school to a empty house and I put "Nightout" on the stereo on high volume to get out my frustrations. Simply magic, and i'm so thankful for this video!

  • THe whole of this album was awesome. Stupid Girl is absolutely mental, and the rest are great tracks. Unfortunately she shacked up with someone from The Clash who produced her second album which frankly was a load of cack. The result - obscurity. I saw her in a documentary last year and she was just a middle aged Texas housewife with bad teeth - think i'll stick to the memory :)

  • she has such a great voice ,but i know why meatloaf did not wanted her in his clip .and she has sung it! meatloaf can go to hell.

  • Hi, I agree, but why didn`t she stick with ML? I`ve always been wondering.

To me, she actually was much better than Karla DeVito.....

  • I still marvel at her voice after 30 years... awesome... thanks for posting!

  • Another great song from your list "We Belong" i rattle my car windows as iam driving through the Adelaide hills to this on my cd player...very cool mate...

  • Ellen, quelle voix. je vibre en t'écoutant. Une voix digne de ta beauté.

  • This really is what power ballad means!

She has a fantastic power voice, and she looked great -- my kinda gal!

Does anyone know who played the guitar solo, it was either Mick Ronson or Ian Hunter, but I don't know which one ?

  • ah the memories...she's fantastic, still.

  • I so wished she was going to be the new Blondie. Too bad she didn't stick around very long. Many thanks for posting this- it was by far her best song.
