Hey how did your desighn turn out with a bigger engine?? I actually desighned a paddlewheel boat with 5.5hp OHV engine last summer and got it plained off at 15mph at times we think it may have topped 20mph but i am currently putting two 8hp briggs and stratton engines on so= 16 total horsepower but i think i can easily get 35-40 mph out of it with my desighn.
@Stirmlost - You must have gotten your gearing about right. The funny thing about planning boats is that the drag force hits a sort of brick wall where V^3 knees up to a sort of asymptote. At this point it takes a disproportionate addition of power to make even small speed gains.
Cool! I never imagined a paddle wheel making a boat go that fast! I must ask, how efficient is it (power/weight) to a similar sized boat going the same speed that's propeller-powered?
The boat displaces 2000 lbs and has a 2TC Toyota car engine from a 1973 Carina rated 88 hp at 6500 rpm. With this setup it tops out at 5800 rpm so it doesn't quite make the full 88 hp. It has only enough power to pull first gear. I calculated the paddlewheel has only 28% slip making it pretty close to the efficiency of a prop.
At low speed the twin rudders turn it pretty well. At high speed it makes broad turns; there is no keel. With the open differential, the twin wheels could be braked separately and the boat would steer very quickly.
throw a 496 volvo penta engine in that thing itll go faster but nice boat tho ive never see a paddle wheel boat go faster than 10mph til now

Don't be around that boat when one of the wheels gives out.

Put a blade on there like a reel mower and you'll have the world's fastest weed cutter.

You could rent it out during the summer to aerate farmers ponds in the area.

Throw a turbocharged motorcycle engine with the transmission on there and you have one hell of a fast machine :)

I'm with you there. I have a complete 2004 R1 engine and a design on the table for a 70 mph paddlewheel.
