Remember Iberian union with Portugal, we Portuguese lost our king without descendt and Felipe of Spain invaded Portugal and he got our empire and our big naval fleet, we lost half our naval power on that war,,, 1580 to 1667 was our big desastre : to form Iberian union
@ejc45 You fail to appreciate the gravity of what occurred. Phillip II did not only declare war on the English, he did in the name of the Catholic Church. The Spanish Armada was one piece of a Crusade, or a Holy WAR, meant to replace and punish perceived heretics and infidels with rulers obedient to the Catholic faith. Among the Armada was the Inquisition... You haven't the slightest idea or respect for how terrible that would have been... Not exactly the IRS asking for taxes...
Speaking about wind, there was never a war but rather a small battle where the Spanish were outstandingly winning against the British till out of the blue a huge storm showed up.
Actually Spain was the first true global empire and the first empire too were " the sun never sets.", words of King Phillip II of Spain , and later adopted by the English for their own empire.
@clarabelle1able My Name is Lincoln is the name of the track. It's borrowed from the movie The Island. Composed by Steve Jablonski who also composed the score for both Transformers movie and the up coming new one I believe.
Portuguese Empire, who was that? lol This is what anybody will tell you if you ask them about Portuguese Empire.
Ask them about Spanish Empire and they will say: ohh yeah Spanish Empire, one of the most powerful ones during centuries 15th, 16th and 17th and the reason why Spanish is the 2nd most widely spoken language in the world, approximately 329 million speakers.
@vid1815 Yeah... the people that answer you that are people without a brain and who have not studied history. And Portuguese is the 7th or 8th most-spoken language. And don't compare Portugal to Spain - they are both different and amazing countries (I lived in Spain for about a year, so I can say that personally). Now, a tiny country, with over a million inhabitants (Portuguese population around the 15th century) - conquered such a huge empire. Is simply amazing.
@vid1815 And I'm not questioning what's the most powerful empire in history. Empires rise and fall. As simple as that. I was just stating that anyone that studies history, and is not biased, clearly states that Portugal formed the first global empire in history. When? With the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 (soon, the conquest of various outposts in Africa would follow). Spain (or Castilla and Aragón) would only begin expanding their empire about 80 years later, with the Catholic Kings, in 1495.
@vid1815 If Portugal was nothing as you try to imply, why did the Portuguese and the Spanish signed the Treaty of Tordesilhas? Just a mere formality? I don't think so. Study history, my friend, and leave nationalism behind. That era has long passed.
Can someone please tell me the music that begins at 20? I'm looking for the first song, not the jablonsky my name is lincoln song. Please if anyone knows, message me or reply. Thanks!
Didn't anyone think this movie was kinda biased? Christ...the King of Spain was written like a f@$%ing James Bond villain in this film. Yeah, I hate the Inquisition as much as the next guy. But come on...
@OakleyMexican Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! This Anglo-Spanish war (1585-1604) was finally won by Spain (London Treaty). The Spanish was still THE MOST powerful Empire in the world until XVIII century (FIGHTING AGAINST MOST OF THE OTHER SUPERPOWERS SIMULTANEOUSLY (uk, france, ottomans, dutch rebels...); not like the Usa today -or the english in XIX- fighting with the most advanced technology against third world countries with the help of plenty of allies.
@OakleyMexican Do you understand what's the Battle of Aljubarrota? English + Portuguese against Spanish + French. This battle established the independence of Portugal, and set the path for Portugal to become the first global empire in history. This battle also is the beginning of the oldest alliance on history. Its name is Luso-British Alliance or Treaty of Windsor (concluded with the marriage of King John I of Portugal with Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt - son of Edward III).
@SoldierIberian1 You're joking, right? The first was definately the Portuguese Empire. Get your facts straight. The Portuguese Empire began with the conquest of Ceuta. The Spanish Empire began with the conquest of America. If you don't like that, close your eyes, your mouth and your ears, and pretend whatever you want to pretend. Idiot.
@AvatarMarxon90 to see dumb ass ...... GLOBAL EMPIRE means an empire that has territories on 5 continents to see if you find IGNORANT! And the first global empire of humanity WAS THE SPANISH EMPIRE IDIOT! .... THAT DARING IS THE IGNORANCE!!!
@SoldierIberian1 That's why Portugal is the longest modern empire ever. From 1417 up to 1999. You probably didn't knew this, for you Spanish only study subjects about Spain and all others are meaningless. You should leave that Castillan arrogance behind. Thank God your asses were kicked in this historical episode (the Spanish Armada) and later by the Portuguese, in 1640 (as well as in Aljubarrota, in 1385).
@AvatarMarxon90 bufff much nonsense written...so put the Spanish empire continues, because Spain is still territories in northern Africa(Ceuta,Melilla,Chafarinas islands, islands Alhucemas,Parsley etc)so is the Spanish empire from 1492 to TODAY...and if I speak of the crown of Aragon the possessions in Europe you have to go back to the XII century SO I DO NOT COME WITH TALES OF ARROGANCE SPANISH, IS PURE HISTORY!And the reality is that Spain was the biggest ass kicker who has seen the world
@SoldierIberian1 Are you still dwealing in such ignorance, you idiot? Because Ceuta is in Africa. Whether you like it or not, the Portuguese Empire is the first global empire in Mankind's history. And it is stated by all historians in this world (don't know about yours). Now, just out of curiosity - are you in history in university? Because I am. So shut the fuck up, and read a history book.
@AvatarMarxon90 I repeat to you if you have not heard (which I see you fools that hard to understand things) GLOBAL EMPIRE means you have possessions in the 5 continents, not just 1 or 2 ..... AT ALL ! youunderstand now "university" of lie? Jajajajajajja
@SoldierIberian1 So... the Spanish Empire began in 1492... the Portuguese Empire began in 1415. Do you want more proof, you idiot? What the fuck... can you be so dumb that you can't even do the math? I'm done with you. I presented the proofs - you don't like them? I don't fucking care. They are historical facts. Portugal, a tiny country, gave new worlds to the world. The Spanish don't like that fact? Up yours.
@AvatarMarxon90 here the only that is raging because are leaving on the floor with clear data it's you that you have to invent things to attack...ARE PAINFUL! Spain: the first global empire of humanity, the first country to circunnavegated the world (Juan Sebastian de Elcano),with the British the greatest empire in history (though the African conquering English bone did not have any merit) and the only ones who were UNBEATEN in the battlefields of Europe for 150 years ... continued? xDDDD
@SoldierIberian1 No my friend - you are completly wrong about that theory of global empire. But I've already seen that sense can't be put into that mind of yours.
THE FIRST GLOBAL EMPIRE WAS PORTUGAL! Now, if you want to say that Spain discovered the Americas - fine; that the Spanish Empire was huge - correct. But don't tell lies, please. The Portuguese Empire was the First Global Empire in history. Speak to any history professor for God's sake.
@SoldierIberian1 Lol, the Spanish Empire, the first global empire? That's a joke. Perhaps it was one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen (along with the British) but not the first, my friend. The first, once again (I need to repeat it so something enters in that head of yours), was the Portuguese Empire, which began in 1415. Search around the internet, read books, for God's sake. I sense there's a lack of reading over there.
@AvatarMarxon90 to see the only fool here is you you who are ignorant to say .... feet of any university professor ... jajajjajajja academics go the only moron here there is you who are so retarded to understand which GLOBAL EMPIRE MEANS Possession in 5 CONTINENTS!!, but you're so stupid you are unable to understand ... Portugal is not to be the first global empire but NEVER BEEN A GLOBAL EMPIRE BECAUSE NEVER HAD COLONIES IN 5 CONTINENTS. STUDY AND THEN TALK!
@SoldierIberian1 I'll quote it again: "Portugal began establishing the first global trade network and empire under the leadership of Henry the Navigator."
@SoldierIberian1 LOL! Geoffrey Parker said that? Or are you making that your own quotation? Shut up my friend, ask any history professor, as I told you before, what was the first global empire - Portugal, or Spain? They will all say, Portugal.
And dumbass, Portugal had colonies in Africa, America, India and Oceania - so fuck off. What do you call Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, Brazil, East Timor, Macao, Formosa, Ceylon, Diu and Daman, Goa, Nagasaki, Cape Town, and so on?
@SoldierIberian1 Like they say: "trolls gonna troll" - you're just another internet troll, who thinks he knows some history, when he knows none - not even of his own country. For your information you fucking prick, the Catholic Kings were in charge of "Spain" (as we cannot call it Spain) when they became a global empire. Fuck off... you don't even know the history of your own country.
@SoldierIberian1 If all Spanish have your level of education... poor Spanish... poor Spanish. But I know I can't generalize all Spanish by looking at such a dumbfucker like you. Poor SoldierIberian1. Ask anyone on YouTube if you like, in any university in this world, and they'll all tell you: the first global empire, as I have quoted before, you fucking blind idiot, was PORTUGAL.
@SoldierIberian1 "The first global empires were a product of the European Age of Exploration that began with a race of exploration between the then most advanced maritime powers, Portugal and Spain, in the 15th century." - now, let's do the math, and learn some history, shall we, my dumb "friend"?
@SoldierIberian1 XV century begins in 1400, correct? and ends in 1499. Now tell me, the Spanish began their conquest and global expansion when? 1495. But when did the Portuguese started? In 1415! With the conquest of Ceuta! Do the math, use your brain!
@SoldierIberian1 So, the quotation you took from Geoffrey Parker is either wrong (you made a bad translation) or he is completly biased. And that's it. Even one of the greatest British historians, David Starkey, confirms in a documentary that the Portuguese were the first global empire, in a time-scale understanding, my friend.
Go home. There's nothing left for you to discuss. Don't show your ignorance even more, my Spanish friend. What's history - it's history. You can't change it.
@AvatarMarxon90 im sorry but Brithis historians ever fooled about the true history, cause british people ever were humilliated by us. Read the true history of Blas de Lezo or Antonio Gutiérrez de Otero y Santayana and you will see
@AvatarMarxon90 bad translation?¿ ajjajajaajja but you are dumbass?¿?¿ if the text was in english !
here the only ignorant and uneducated are you ..... that you're so clever know even that one of the best historians of the planet (so clever you are here typing on youtube! jaajaj) will say it again Portuguese Spain was the first global empire in the world and the first to circunnavegated the planet ....NO CRYYY MOREEEEEEEE!!!
and education in Spain is relatively higher than in your country ....
@SoldierIberian1 Did I ever said the contrary? Do you want me to write in Portuguese or what? Obviously Spain is bigger than Portugal. And that's what I meant - Portugal, with such a tiny size it has, conquered a vast empire. Obviously, not as big as the Spanish. But that is not what we were discussing. Yes - the Spanish were the first to circunnavigating the planet. But you are missing the point. The first global empire was Portugal. Spain soon followed. Is that hard to understand? Jesus.
@SoldierIberian1 Do you want me to make you a painting or what? If you post another answer like the 20 you have, I'll definately post a link to a picture, so that your tiny brain understands it.
And education is higher in Spain? You can believe in whatever you wish to believe (not to speak you are still saying that Spain was the first global empire, when it was not).
Curiosity: how old are you? Do you go to university or what school grade do you attend? I truly hope you're not in history.
@SoldierIberian1 Tip: do the math. It's something you learned in school (in first grades) - 1415... 1495, which one does come first? 1495? No. So, it's Portugal, in a TIME SCALE. I'm not talking about size! I'm not here trying to contest the size of anything, for God's sake. I'm just stating the time - Portugal was the first, Spain followed, to build one of the greatest empires in history. "Spain: the empire from which the sun never sets."
@SoldierIberian1 Tip: do the math. It's something you learned in school (in first grades) - 1415... 1495, which one does come first? 1495? No. So, it's Portugal, in a TIME SCALE. I'm just stating the time - Portugal was the first, Spain followed, to build one of the greatest empires in history. "Spain: the empire from which the sun never sets."
@SoldierIberian1 And I deduzed that perhaps you had made a bad translation of Geoffrey Parker, because although he is an Englishman, he is a Hispanophile. I would find it natural for him to write in Castillan or whatever. Honestly, I only have one book of his. Can't say I apreciated much. But that's my personal opinion. What counts here is the truth: you can contest something like: who discovered Australia? Who re-discovered Canada? These are great questions for a debate.
@SoldierIberian1 Now, to say that Spain was the first global empire, is a history error. Looking at a time frame, Portugal was the first global empire - and the reason why I keep answering to you, is so that some time is shed upon your historical mind/ view. Don't know anything about it? Don't discuss it. As simple as that. Do some research before claiming something that it isn't.
@AvatarMarxon90 Very wrong.Spain was the first global empire because had colonies and territories in the 5 continents.Portugal had no colonies or territories in Europe.
@yosyesyo O_O And Spain had? The Spanish Netherlands and Southern Italy, and Milan and everything that came from Charles V, were part of Spain, not colonies. Gosh, what are you people studying? You don't even know what colonies are? And Portugal and Spain are where? In America? Or Atlantida? Do me a favor, go take those classes of history and geography again. Bloody idiots.
@AvatarMarxon90 By the way, you should read more carefully,i´ve never said that Netherlands,Southern Italy etc were colonies, i´ve said that Spain unlike Portugal, had territories and colonies in the 5 continents and for several centuries held an empire in Europe,it had vast land possesions within Europe itself, that´s why it´s considered the first true global empire, is that so hard to understand?
@yosyesyo But what lands in Europe, besides the Spanish Netherlands and all territories that came from Philip the Handsome? Can you tell me that?
And no, my friend. Once again I correct you: Portugal and Spain were the first global empires. But in time-frame, what country built its first empire? Portugal. From 1415 on. Spain would only start in 1495 with the Catholic Kings.
@yosyesyo And Portugal did have territories across the whole globe. Portugal is in Europe, just like Spain. Now, do tell me what territories did Spain have besides those I just said.
@yosyesyo Portugal had colonies in America (Brazil and for a very short time, Uruguay - as an occupied Spanish colony); Africa (several colonies); Asia (Macao, Nagasaki in Japan, Formosa, which is actual Taiwan, Singapore, Malacca, Portuguese India, Ceylon, Maldives, and so on); Middle East (Bahrain, Oman, and some outposts in Persia); Oceania (East Timor). Oh, and Continental Portugal, along with Portuguese Morocco (Ceuta, Agadir, Essaouira, etc) and Madeira and Azores.
@AvatarMarxon90 Geez, reading your childish arguments no wonder why you need to resort to impotent insults constantly. Portugal had no territories in Europe, however many territories in Europe were part of the numerous possessions of the king of Spain such as the Low Countries.
Historical inferiority complex against us Portuguese? you must be kidding me lol.Portugal was annexed by Spain, do you remember?.
@yosyesyo The Spanish Empire expanded throughout the Americas, and Portugal thorughout Africa and India. That was the sole purpose of the Treaty of Tordesilhas. So why did the Spanish came to us to sign it? Just for fun? No, my friend. The Catholic Kings nor the Portuguese King wanted more wars (or eventual wars) from a possible clash between expansionist pretensions. Hence, the division of the globe in two. Who launched the global expansion? The Portuguese.
@yosyesyo It's like an American coming to you and saying: the Americans were the first to get to space. Wrong. Completely wrong. Russia was the first country to go on space. Now, if you talk about the moon - that's a completely different subject.
The Spanish were the first global empire? No. The first global empire were the Portuguese (and yes, with colonies in all continents - learn geography, please). But was the Portuguese empire larger than the Spanish? No. Impossible.
@yosyesyo God... you Spanish guys have a fucking poor brain, and an historical inferiority complex against us Portuguese. You even try to twist historical facts around O_O
@AvatarMarxon90 And to finish,if you want to learn some real history of Spain, you can read the last book written by William D.Philips and Carla Rahn, both professors of history at the University of Minessota, one of its chapter is entitled " Spain as the first Global empire", i´m sure you´ll like it :) bye
@yosyesyo I just spoke about the Spanish Netherlands, and you denied it. And I keep insisting with you: the first global empire was Portugal. But people truly believe in whatever they wish. History, you cannot change, fortunately.
Anyways, yes - Spain, with Philip the Handsome and his descendants had several territories in Europe, which would all later fall after the War of the Spanish Sucession. And we did conquer our independece twice, didn't we? Against a much powerful nation than ours.
@yosyesyo Then I don't know when David Starkey mentions the Portuguese as the first global empire, as well as Daniel Daenhardt. For God's sake. Noone denies the Spanish built the one of the largest empires in history. But surely not the first global empire. Because in my world, Spain is in Europe. So, the fact they acquired more territories, means nothing. Portugal is also in Europe, last time I checked.
@yosyesyo So in your point of view, the British never had a global empire? Except when they had Hanover? Right. Yeah *irony*. The Dutch never had a global empire, right? Yeah *irony again*. What about the French? Do something, go learn about the notions of global empire, and dates of establishment. You'd be surprised.
@AvatarMarxon90 Listen,Spain and Portugal pioneered European exploration of the globe, that´s a fact but if we talk about what was the first global empire you´ll find that on this topic as on many other, there´s no always consensus among historians themselves cos the concept "global "has many uses, eg:the British historian Henry Kamen also mention Spain as the first global empire.
@yosyesyo And a PhD, frankly? I'll set you an example then: I went to this exposition in the Portuguese Military Academy - and the guide of the tour, was a professor, with a PhD as well, in History of Art. I, as a student of History, would grant him 90% correct on his tour - I don't give him 100%, because he gave some wrong historical facts while talking about princess Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles II of England; and King John VI of Portugal.
@AvatarMarxon90Today Spain is considered by most historians the first true global empire, not only cos the numerous territories around the globe but also in Europe itself:
@AvatarMarxon90 Netherlands,Luxembourg,Belgium,Portugal, most of Italy, parts of Germany and France...that´s why it was said the sun never sets on the Spanish Empire cos had possesions in Europe,Africa, the Americas, the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Far East,a true global presence in this sense.
Having said that, i have a great respect for Portugal, its history and its people.
@yosyesyo I respect the Spanish as well. I lived in Spain for about a year, and unfortunately, I can't say that I love the Spanish (especially those from Madrid). Anyways, you can't claim that Spain was the first global empire, because it had territories in Europe, and Portugal didn't. Let's put the facts on the table: those territorial possessions formed an EMPIRE - this is, a vast ammount of territories (example, Spain under Philip the Handsome, for a short period of time; or Roman Empire).
@yosyesyo But obviously, to achieve a global empire, a country needs possessions in other continents. And this was what Portugal did. While Castilla and Aragón were trying to deal with their problems, Portugal was dealing with a decision: either conquering Granada or begin the expansion of Portugal in Morocco. Prince Henry the Navigator chose the latter, and here begins the first global empire. The conquest of Ceuta is in 1415. Do you understand now?
@yosyesyo Castilla and Aragón will only begin in 1495 with the discovery, conquest and colonization of the Americas. Soon, Portugal would hold Madeira, Azores, a pretension on the Canary Islands, outposts in Morocco (6 or 7); several outposts throughout the African coast; and later, to the largest global empire that Portugal, being a tiny country, built.
@yosyesyo My point is not to say: "Ah! Portugal is better than Spain." - because it's not. Portugal has good thing, but also bad things (in actuality and in its history); as well as Spain. My point is to show the truth about historical facts. It's as simple as that.
@yosyesyo And the fact you can't claim that is because Britain was also a global empire, as well as Netherlands, and both these nations had their core territories (Europe) and expanded their powers to other continents. And their empires begin when the Dutch start stealing Portuguese colonies after the break-away of the Iberian Union and the British, with the re-discovery of Terra Nova.
@yosyesyo "The first global empires were a product of the European Age of Exploration that began with a race of exploration between the then most advanced maritime powers, Portugal and Spain, in the 15th century."
"Portugal began establishing the first global trade network and empire under the leadership of Henry the Navigator."
@yosyesyo And the Iberian Union didn't mean that Portugal was annexed: "From 1580 to 1640 the Portuguese Empire and the Spanish Empire were conjoined in a personal union of its Habsburg monarchs, during the period of the Iberian Union, though the empires continued to be administered separately." - obviously, that at that time, Philip was the legitimate heir to the Portuguese throne. And he made his pretension be heard.
@AvatarMarxon90 You said " My point is to show the truth" who´s truth? yours. Most historians never going to agree with you on this.Geoffrey Parker one of the most prestigious historians and hispanists in the world, who holds his BA, MA, Ph.D. and Litt.D. degrees from Cambridge University where he studied under
@AvatarMarxon90 the historian, Sir John Huxtable Elliott ,(eminent historian, Regius Professor Emeritus in the University of Oxford and Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford and Trinity College, Cambridge) who also was cathedratic at the University of Yale,Illinois,Ohio,Saint Andrews,British Columbia etc..stated " PHILIP II RULED THE FIRST GLOBAL EMPIRE IN HISTORY "
@AvatarMarxon90 It´s obvious that these people know more about history than you and me together,so let´s not argue about what colour is the sky when the experts are clear.
@yosyesyo Let's not argue? I'm sorry? Yes I will. I'm studying history, and it's my duty to show the truth. And what they are telling is simply not true. How could Philip II be rulling the first global empire, when it was his grandparents that started it? And Portugal was definately the first global empire. I tried to explain it to you calmly for about three times. Do whatever you wish. I'm already tired of this.
@yosyesyo Just for you, my friend, I went to the library of my university, and I requisitioned this book: "História de Portugal e do Império Português - Volume I" - basically, "History of Portugal and the Portuguese Empire - Volume I" by A. R. Disney. Disney studied in Oxford and Harvard, and taught History in Melbourne and La Trobe. The articles I've read from him were from the Economic History Review magazine, which is basically, one of the most important history magazines available.
@AvatarMarxon90 I recommend you to re-read my comments again, especially when i mentioned that the concept global has many uses in history that´s why there´s no always consensus among historians themselves. As i´ve said Geoffrey Parker who studied in Cambridge and is one of the most important historians in the world and was cathedratic at the University of Yale,etc.... wrote in his book "The grand strategy of Philip II" "Philip II ruled the first global empire in History".
@yosyesyo Anyways, I'm going to put the introduction, by Sir John Elliott (Regius Professor Emeritus of Modern History in Oxford University): "Disney, in this impressive work divided in two volumes about the history of Portugal and its ultramarine empire until the beginning of the XIX century, produzed a sinthetic work which was expected for a long time. Updated in academical terms, with a lucide and coeherent exposition, this book (...)
@AvatarMarxon90 The prestigious British historian Henry Kamen who studied at the University of Oxford and taught history in universities of the UK,USA,etc. and who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society also wrote regarding Philip II " His was the FIRST global empire in history and in time it became the world’s largest dominion"
@yosyesyo (...) - which combines the narrative with its analysis - is the essential starting point for all those interested in the origins and character of the first real global empire in world history."
There you have it. I'm going to read it, and I suggest you the same, if you are interested obviously. But for the record - never - EVER - try to distort history. It's just a friendly advice.
@AvatarMarxon90 There you have it,so instead of accusing me of distorting history or saying that these historians with such professional prestige don´t tell the truth, you should at least finish your studies coz if not sounds as ridiculous as a medical student trying to teach a prestigious surgeon to operate... a friendly advice.
@yosyesyo Then how do you present those, and ignore mine? Sir John Elliot was even presented with the Prince of Asturias prize, he lectured in Cambridge, he is considered to be one of the major Spanish historiographers. He was even presented with the Balzan prize! He taught in Oxford... God, how I'd love to have his curriculum.
@AvatarMarxon90 I didn´t ignore that historian, i´ve just proved that there´s no consensus among historians, very prestigious historians as you can see, they often say, the first real global empire, the first true global empire..real?, true?,what do they mean with that ? i don´t know what they consider a global empire or a true global empire.
@yosyesyo And yes. There is consense in what comes to global empire. I had really never heard someone saying that Spain was a global empire, just because they had more territories in Europe than Portugal.
@AvatarMarxon90 You´re Portuguese probably always have heard that the Portuguese was the first global empire, well i´m Spanish and i´ve always heard it was the Spanish, in fact many information on the net written in Spanish says the same.Anyways everyone has their point of view, also Sir John Elliot wrote in his book Imperial Spain about the annexation of Portugal to Spain and you said that the Iberian Union doesn´t mean that Portugal was annexed...
@yosyesyo If you do the math, the Spanish Empire only lived for 483 years, from 1492 to 1975. While the Portuguese Empire endured from 1415 up to 1999. That's 584.
@yosyesyo You cannot colonize something that already is a country, ffs. Is that so hard to understand? ALL historians, and wtf, play a computer game, Portugal and Spain are known as the first GLOBAL empires. What was the first of both? Portugal. Is that so hard to understand? Is that so hard to accept? Just because that tiny country that happens to be nothing today (and that happens to be your neighbour) started the path to global empires in history? Is that fucking hard?
@yosyesyo And the Spanish Empire only began their empire with Charles V? You are stating that, with your sentence alone. And yet again, that's another historical error. The Spanish Empire began with his grandparents, the Catholic Kings, in 1495. I don't know how many times I've said it there, but you people still can't understand. I tell you, don't ever go to History in university. You won't pass through the first semester.
@AvatarMarxon90 I´m stating that Spain was the first GLOBAL empire which is true.As i´ve said Portugal had no territories in Europe.I´m afraid it´s you who need a history lesson.
@SoldierIberian1 You can establish a "timeline" of global empires: Portugal » Spain » Dutch » British » France » Germany » Italy » Russia.
I think you are in a state of shock, and can't accept that the tiny country, which is Portugal, was the first global empire in history. You cannot blame me for that. What I do not accept is that any person tries to wash historical facts away for their own purposes. The Portuguese Empire was the first global empire in mankind's history. I have it said.
Where did they recruit the supposedly Spaniards in this movie, South America? Because they sure don't look Spanish, I've been to Spain 5 times already and Spaniards don't look like South Americans..................It had to be Hollywood. !!!!!
@themailman43 Hollywood is run by Jews, they try to make Spaniards look dark? it is said that Jews from Hollywood were kicked out of Spain 500 years ago thats why they hold a grudge
kindly observed: all the countries that were colonized by Spain even up to the present times...still belong to the third world countires... and being a citizen of the Philippines (which is a third world country and what a pitty!) ...Spain sucks ten times!!
@thetruehagentronje no you are the worthless big pile of shit!!!! you were born out of shit you were made of shit your whole fucked up life is shit SO you are ....SHIT! i am sooo thankful being a monkey i can progress unlike a shit like YOUUU!! we were called savagers be careful you might just face it you ugly fuck!!
@traexierous The reason almost all former spanish colonies are third world is very clear. 99 % of the people in them are of Indian descent, the very whites of Spanish descent are in the upper classes of those countries.

Rule! Rule Britannia and Lusitania! Long live the world's oldest alliance! And if the Spanish ever try it again, we'll give them the force of 3 or 4 Aljubarrota's!
This film is ridicoulus, they put spanish like moors!!! , and we come from german tribes! and think that we are fanatic religious , that is not true, and if our armada come to england, now that fucking land of monkeys will be ours
@TheSpanish12 Uh... during Philip II's reing Spanish and Portuguese WERE ferverent Catholics. I'm sorry to bring this to you, my Spanish friend. Try to learn "El Ultimo Cruzado" by Louis de Wohl... it's a romance, but it depicts a bit of how religion was lived in those times. And even the Spanish navy tried to invade England, you'd get your asses kicked again. Not even Hitler tried that. Él oh él.
it´s a shame that on 21st century someone make this class of movie, Black Legend had sense on 16th century for fighting against spaniards but now this is pure defamation
@hoselui of course i know where the greatest country is! spain sucks, thats why england crushed it (multiple times). this movie does an accurate job depicting spain as corrupt and oppressive. =)
@broadsword303 This is movie is only a Hollywood product which is destined for american middle class. Spain was the 1st power for 150 years and England couldn´t do anything about it, England wasn´t the 1st world power until 1805 in Trafalgar.
@hoselui read a history book, you'll correct your misfindings. spain was genocidal and wiped out millions of native americans, and tried to force catholicism on everyone. england defeated them and saved europe.
@broadsword303 Spain was genocidal?? hahaha so let me ask you one question where are north american natives and how many are? and how many are in Latin America? the fact is the colonies where english dominated, the native population was sistematically reduced, the numbers don´t lie.
@hoselui of course i know where the greatest country is! spain sucks, thats why england crushed it (multiple times). this movie does an accurate job depicting spain as corrupt and oppressive. =)
Does anyone know the name of the song that is being played when the UNIVERSAL PICTURES PRESENTS comes up on the screen I think it is the same song that is played for the rest of the trailer if anyone knows please post
The english killed 3,500 Irish Catholics in the Massacre of Drogheda, burning women and children alive all in an attempt to wipe out Irish Catholicism. They killed more people in an afternoon than the spanish inquisition and the Rome inquisition did in 200 years of their history.

AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
Portuguese Empire, who was that? lol This is what anybody will tell you if you ask them about Portuguese Empire.
Ask them about Spanish Empire and they will say: ohh yeah Spanish Empire, one of the most powerful ones during centuries 15th, 16th and 17th and the reason why Spanish is the 2nd most widely spoken language in the world, approximately 329 million speakers.
vid1815 1 year ago
@vid1815 Yeah... the people that answer you that are people without a brain and who have not studied history. And Portuguese is the 7th or 8th most-spoken language. And don't compare Portugal to Spain - they are both different and amazing countries (I lived in Spain for about a year, so I can say that personally). Now, a tiny country, with over a million inhabitants (Portuguese population around the 15th century) - conquered such a huge empire. Is simply amazing.
AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@vid1815 And I'm not questioning what's the most powerful empire in history. Empires rise and fall. As simple as that. I was just stating that anyone that studies history, and is not biased, clearly states that Portugal formed the first global empire in history. When? With the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 (soon, the conquest of various outposts in Africa would follow). Spain (or Castilla and Aragón) would only begin expanding their empire about 80 years later, with the Catholic Kings, in 1495.

@AvatarMarxon90 Portugal first global empire? who you kidding? THE FIRST GLOBAL EMPIRE WAS THE SPANISH EMPIRE
SoldierIberian1 1 year ago

SoldierIberian1 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 That's why Portugal is the longest modern empire ever. From 1417 up to 1999. You probably didn't knew this, for you Spanish only study subjects about Spain and all others are meaningless. You should leave that Castillan arrogance behind. Thank God your asses were kicked in this historical episode (the Spanish Armada) and later by the Portuguese, in 1640 (as well as in Aljubarrota, in 1385).
AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago

SoldierIberian1 1 year ago
AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 Lol, the Spanish Empire, the first global empire? That's a joke. Perhaps it was one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen (along with the British) but not the first, my friend. The first, once again (I need to repeat it so something enters in that head of yours), was the Portuguese Empire, which began in 1415. Search around the internet, read books, for God's sake. AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 "The first global empires were a product of the European Age of Exploration that began with a race of exploration between the then most advanced maritime powers, Portugal and Spain, in the 15th century." - now, let's do the math, and learn some history, shall we, my dumb "friend"?
AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 XV century begins in 1400, correct? and ends in 1499. Now tell me, the Spanish began their conquest and global expansion when? 1495. But when did the Portuguese started? In 1415! With the conquest of Ceuta! Do the math, use your brain!
AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 So, the quotation you took from Geoffrey Parker is either wrong (you made a bad translation) or he is completly biased. And that's it. Even one of the greatest British historians, David Starkey, confirms in a documentary that the Portuguese were the first global empire, in a time-scale understanding, my friend.

and education in Spain is relatively higher than in your country ....
SoldierIberian1 1 year ago

AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 So here's my last chance for you to understand:
. Portugal and Spain were the first global empires in history.
. Portugal y España fueran los dos primeros imperios globales de la historia.
. Portugal began its global expansion in 1415 with the conquest of Ceuta. Spain followed in 1495, with the discovery of the Americas.

AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago
@SoldierIberian1 Now, to say that Spain was the first global empire, is a history error. Looking at a time frame, Portugal was the first global empire - and the reason why I keep answering to you, is so that some time is shed upon your historical mind/ view. Don't know anything about it? Don't discuss it. As simple as that. Do some research before claiming something that it isn't.
AvatarMarxon90 1 year ago

@AvatarMarxon90 By the way, you should read more carefully,i´ve never said that Netherlands,Southern Italy etc were colonies, i´ve said that Spain unlike Portugal, had territories and colonies in the 5 continents and for several centuries held an empire in Europe,it had vast land possesions within Europe itself, that´s why it´s considered the first true global empire, is that so hard to understand?
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo But what lands in Europe, besides the Spanish Netherlands and all territories that came from Philip the Handsome? Can you tell me that?
And no, my friend. Once again I correct you: Portugal and Spain were the first global empires. But in time-frame, what country built its first empire? Portugal. From 1415 on. Spain would only start in 1495 with the Catholic Kings.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo And Portugal did have territories across the whole globe. Portugal is in Europe, just like Spain. Now, do tell me what territories did Spain have besides those I just said.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 Geez, reading your childish arguments no wonder why you need to resort to impotent insults constantly. Portugal had no territories in Europe, however many territories in Europe were part of the numerous possessions of the king of Spain such as the Low Countries.
Historical inferiority complex against us Portuguese? you must be kidding me lol.Portugal was annexed by Spain, do you remember?.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo You're going to tell me that Portuguese didn't have colonies in all 5 continents? Absurd.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo The Spanish Empire expanded throughout the Americas, and Portugal thorughout Africa and India. That was the sole purpose of the Treaty of Tordesilhas. So why did the Spanish came to us to sign it? Just for fun? No, my friend. The Catholic Kings nor the Portuguese King wanted more wars (or eventual wars) from a possible clash between expansionist pretensions. Hence, the division of the globe in two. Who launched the global expansion? The Portuguese.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo It's like an American coming to you and saying: the Americans were the first to get to space. Wrong. Completely wrong. Russia was the first country to go on space. Now, if you talk about the moon - that's a completely different subject.
The Spanish were the first global empire? No. The first global empire were the Portuguese (and yes, with colonies in all continents - learn geography, please). But was the Portuguese empire larger than the Spanish? No. Impossible.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo God... you Spanish guys have a fucking poor brain, and an historical inferiority complex against us Portuguese. You even try to twist historical facts around O_O
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 And to finish,if you want to learn some real history of Spain, you can read the last book written by William D.Philips and Carla Rahn, both professors of history at the University of Minessota, one of its chapter is entitled " Spain as the first Global empire", i´m sure you´ll like it :) bye
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo I just spoke about the Spanish Netherlands, and you denied it. And I keep insisting with you: the first global empire was Portugal. But people truly believe in whatever they wish. History, you cannot change, fortunately.
Anyways, yes - Spain, with Philip the Handsome and his descendants had several territories in Europe, which would all later fall after the War of the Spanish Sucession. And we did conquer our independece twice, didn't we? Against a much powerful nation than ours.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Then I don't know when David Starkey mentions the Portuguese as the first global empire, as well as Daniel Daenhardt. For God's sake. Noone denies the Spanish built the one of the largest empires in history. But surely not the first global empire. Because in my world, Spain is in Europe. So, the fact they acquired more territories, means nothing. Portugal is also in Europe, last time I checked.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo You totally don't know the notions of Global Empire. Search around please.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo So in your point of view, the British never had a global empire? Except when they had Hanover? Right. Yeah *irony*. The Dutch never had a global empire, right? Yeah *irony again*. What about the French? Do something, go learn about the notions of global empire, and dates of establishment. You'd be surprised.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 Listen,Spain and Portugal pioneered European exploration of the globe, that´s a fact but if we talk about what was the first global empire you´ll find that on this topic as on many other, there´s no always consensus among historians themselves cos the concept "global "has many uses, eg:the British historian Henry Kamen also mention Spain as the first global empire.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo And a PhD, frankly? I'll set you an example then: I went to this exposition in the Portuguese Military Academy - and the guide of the tour, was a professor, with a PhD as well, in History of Art. I, as a student of History, would grant him 90% correct on his tour - I don't give him 100%, because he gave some wrong historical facts while talking about princess Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles II of England; and King John VI of Portugal.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90Today Spain is considered by most historians the first true global empire, not only cos the numerous territories around the globe but also in Europe itself:
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 Netherlands,Luxembourg,Belgium,Portugal, most of Italy, parts of Germany and France...that´s why it was said the sun never sets on the Spanish Empire cos had possesions in Europe,Africa, the Americas, the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Far East,a true global presence in this sense.
Having said that, i have a great respect for Portugal, its history and its people.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo I respect the Spanish as well. I lived in Spain for about a year, and unfortunately, I can't say that I love the Spanish (especially those from Madrid). Anyways, you can't claim that Spain was the first global empire, because it had territories in Europe, and Portugal didn't. Let's put the facts on the table: those territorial possessions formed an EMPIRE - this is, a vast ammount of territories (example, Spain under Philip the Handsome, for a short period of time; or Roman Empire).
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo But obviously, to achieve a global empire, a country needs possessions in other continents. And this was what Portugal did. While Castilla and Aragón were trying to deal with their problems, Portugal was dealing with a decision: either conquering Granada or begin the expansion of Portugal in Morocco. Prince Henry the Navigator chose the latter, and here begins the first global empire. The conquest of Ceuta is in 1415. Do you understand now?
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago

AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo And the fact you can't claim that is because Britain was also a global empire, as well as Netherlands, and both these nations had their core territories (Europe) and expanded their powers to other continents. And their empires begin when the Dutch start stealing Portuguese colonies after the break-away of the Iberian Union and the British, with the re-discovery of Terra Nova.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo "The first global empires were a product of the European Age of Exploration that began with a race of exploration between the then most advanced maritime powers, Portugal and Spain, in the 15th century."
"Portugal began establishing the first global trade network and empire under the leadership of Henry the Navigator."
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo And the Iberian Union didn't mean that Portugal was annexed: "From 1580 to 1640 the Portuguese Empire and the Spanish Empire were conjoined in a personal union of its Habsburg monarchs, during the period of the Iberian Union, though the empires continued to be administered separately." - obviously, that at that time, Philip was the legitimate heir to the Portuguese throne. And he made his pretension be heard.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 You said " My point is to show the truth" who´s truth? yours. Most historians never going to agree with you on this.Geoffrey Parker one of the most prestigious historians and hispanists in the world, who holds his BA, MA, Ph.D. and Litt.D. degrees from Cambridge University where he studied under
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 the historian, Sir John Huxtable Elliott ,(eminent historian, Regius Professor Emeritus in the University of Oxford and Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford and Trinity College, Cambridge) who also was cathedratic at the University of Yale,Illinois,Ohio,Saint Andrews,British Columbia etc..stated " PHILIP II RULED THE FIRST GLOBAL EMPIRE IN HISTORY "
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 It´s obvious that these people know more about history than you and me together,so let´s not argue about what colour is the sky when the experts are clear.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Let's not argue? I'm sorry? Yes I will. I'm studying history, and it's my duty to show the truth. And what they are telling is simply not true. How could Philip II be rulling the first global empire, when it was his grandparents that started it? And Portugal was definately the first global empire. I tried to explain it to you calmly for about three times. Do whatever you wish. I'm already tired of this.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Just for you, my friend, I went to the library of my university, and I requisitioned this book: "História de Portugal e do Império Português - Volume I" - basically, "History of Portugal and the Portuguese Empire - Volume I" by A. R. Disney. Disney studied in Oxford and Harvard, and taught History in Melbourne and La Trobe. The articles I've read from him were from the Economic History Review magazine, which is basically, one of the most important history magazines available.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 I recommend you to re-read my comments again, especially when i mentioned that the concept global has many uses in history that´s why there´s no always consensus among historians themselves. As i´ve said Geoffrey Parker who studied in Cambridge and is one of the most important historians in the world and was cathedratic at the University of Yale,etc.... wrote in his book "The grand strategy of Philip II" "Philip II ruled the first global empire in History".
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Anyways, I'm going to put the introduction, by Sir John Elliott (Regius Professor Emeritus of Modern History in Oxford University): "Disney, in this impressive work divided in two volumes about the history of Portugal and its ultramarine empire until the beginning of the XIX century, produzed a sinthetic work which was expected for a long time. Updated in academical terms, with a lucide and coeherent exposition, this book (...)
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 The prestigious British historian Henry Kamen who studied at the University of Oxford and taught history in universities of the UK,USA,etc. and who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society also wrote regarding Philip II " His was the FIRST global empire in history and in time it became the world’s largest dominion"
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo (...) - which combines the narrative with its analysis - is the essential starting point for all those interested in the origins and character of the first real global empire in world history."
There you have it. I'm going to read it, and I suggest you the same, if you are interested obviously. But for the record - never - EVER - try to distort history. It's just a friendly advice.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 There you have it,so instead of accusing me of distorting history or saying that these historians with such professional prestige don´t tell the truth, you should at least finish your studies coz if not sounds as ridiculous as a medical student trying to teach a prestigious surgeon to operate... a friendly advice.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Then how do you present those, and ignore mine? Sir John Elliot was even presented with the Prince of Asturias prize, he lectured in Cambridge, he is considered to be one of the major Spanish historiographers. He was even presented with the Balzan prize! He taught in Oxford... God, how I'd love to have his curriculum.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 I didn´t ignore that historian, i´ve just proved that there´s no consensus among historians, very prestigious historians as you can see, they often say, the first real global empire, the first true global empire..real?, true?,what do they mean with that ? i don´t know what they consider a global empire or a true global empire.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo And yes. There is consense in what comes to global empire. I had really never heard someone saying that Spain was a global empire, just because they had more territories in Europe than Portugal.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Until you said it, obviously.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 You´re Portuguese probably always have heard that the Portuguese was the first global empire, well i´m Spanish and i´ve always heard it was the Spanish, in fact many information on the net written in Spanish says the same.Anyways everyone has their point of view, also Sir John Elliot wrote in his book Imperial Spain about the annexation of Portugal to Spain and you said that the Iberian Union doesn´t mean that Portugal was annexed...
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@yosyesyo If you do the math, the Spanish Empire only lived for 483 years, from 1492 to 1975. While the Portuguese Empire endured from 1415 up to 1999. That's 584.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo Yet, I can "forgive" him, as he was in History of Art.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo You cannot colonize something that already is a country, ffs. Is that so hard to understand? ALL historians, and wtf, play a computer game, Portugal and Spain are known as the first GLOBAL empires. What was the first of both? Portugal. Is that so hard to understand? Is that so hard to accept? Just because that tiny country that happens to be nothing today (and that happens to be your neighbour) started the path to global empires in history? Is that fucking hard?
Go buy a brain.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@yosyesyo And the Spanish Empire only began their empire with Charles V? You are stating that, with your sentence alone. And yet again, that's another historical error. The Spanish Empire began with his grandparents, the Catholic Kings, in 1495. I don't know how many times I've said it there, but you people still can't understand. I tell you, don't ever go to History in university. You won't pass through the first semester.
AvatarMarxon90 11 months ago
@AvatarMarxon90 I´m stating that Spain was the first GLOBAL empire which is true.As i´ve said Portugal had no territories in Europe.I´m afraid it´s you who need a history lesson.
yosyesyo 11 months ago
@SoldierIberian1 You can establish a "timeline" of global empires: Portugal » Spain » Dutch » British » France » Germany » Italy » Russia.
I think you are in a state of shock, and can't accept that the tiny country, which is Portugal, was the first global empire in history. You cannot blame me for that. What I do not accept is that any person tries to wash historical facts away for their own purposes. The Portuguese Empire was the first global empire in mankind's history. I have it said.

Él oh él.

broadsword303 1 year ago 2
@broadsword303 This is movie is only a Hollywood product which is destined for american middle class. Spain was the 1st power for 150 years and England couldn´t do anything about it, England wasn´t the 1st world power until 1805 in Trafalgar.
hoselui 1 year ago
@hoselui read a history book, you'll correct your misfindings. spain was genocidal and wiped out millions of native americans, and tried to force catholicism on everyone. england defeated them and saved europe.
broadsword303 1 year ago
@broadsword303 Spain was genocidal?? hahaha so let me ask you one question where are north american natives and how many are? and how many are in Latin America? the fact is the colonies where english dominated, the native population was sistematically reduced, the numbers don´t lie.
hoselui 1 year ago
@broadsword303 save europe?? hahaha you´re very funny. Saved of what? half Europe is Catholic and not due to Spain. you see too much Hollywood movies
