Asked by Melody Maker whether there were African-American artists who deserved more recognition, Dionne [Warwick] replied, "Well, I can think of a guy like Lou Johnson. He has so much talent... His 'Always Something There to Remind Me' was fifty million times better than Sandie Shaw's [#1 UK] version... Then there was 'Message to Martha.' Burt wrote that specially for Lou. But the disc had only been out two days when Adam Faith covered it. His record was awful—and I'd tell him that, too."
Wow!!! and Lou (75yrs old) can still hack out those vocals after he first cut this record in 1965 and it still holds its own on the dance floor " An all time Northern Soul Classic" and a Night Owl Anthem. Jok Evans

First heard this arround 1968 when a mate of mine "Rob Gillis" found it in a junk shop in Attercliffe, Sheffield. and had its first airing at Mexborough Disc A GoGo. Jok Evans
first time hearing this wow so controlled and exciting understand paying big for a must have record understand the 3am playtime just trying to get you kiddies wound down and to hard earned bed
I have to make a correction on this..."Unsatisfied" was NOT Lou's Big Top debut! It came out on the last incarnation of Big Top, when the label was distributed by Amy/Mala/Bell, around '65-'66. He had one or two other singles on Big Top with A/M/B distribution, including his take on "Walk On By".
"Magic Potion" came along earlier, when Big Top was still an independent label. Big Top closed temporarily, then was reactivated for a short run (500 number series) under the regime of ABC-Paramount.
I love this song! Have heard a couple of earlier records by Lou Johnson, and wondered why he didn't have more success than his voice merited. The original recording of this song definitely deserved to be a hit.
"Unsatisfied" is my favorite NS song also, and I love this video. I like the little "I still got it" smile Johnson makes when he hits the high notes in the middle of the tune.
Got everything you need really, great swinging arrangement, key change in the middle to keep it moving, classic little baritone solo, and a singer with a great voice. Love it!
