  • We've been tersing around truth and deeper matters around for a bit. Medium is the message. Map is the not the territory but seems that a map is a territory unto itself.

After such ponderings a bowl from the bong and this song is the perfect massage to relax after all that mental gymanstics. :)

  • i never knew the alto sax could do that

  • A classic "return to melody" pieces otherwise known as a sub genre of jazz called "modal Jazz".

  • Omg Eric Dolphy is so great on this!

  • @jlhyz2 Yeah, cause usually he is terrible ;)

  • nsg555 said it lol

  • I keep hearing the theme of this composition as being taken from a pavane written by morton gould in his second symphonette?

  • Wow! John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy. This is definitely one of the best clips I have found on YouTube!

  • what song are they playing at the end?

  • check out the wes montgomery version of impressions, amazing

  • Dolphy won.

  • @DVDKC noone won thats not what jazz is about its not competition its expression

  • I recommend Choi Woo Joon - Reversessions

  • This is some of the best music I have ever heard

  • @beneasherTV Thank you very much, I had no idea this existed. Just watched it online...brilliant Coltrane's dedication, devotion and humbleness despite his brilliance was what made him such a genius. I was also not aware of the fact that both Parker and Coltrane were that heavily influenced by classical music, my other favorite genre.

  • saxybair13

  • I keep coming back to this recording. I have had many favorite songs, but Impressions is the only song that has favorite of all time.

  • 10 people are just jealious.

  • 10 people are just... SHUT FUCK UP

  • Hi, my name is Eric Dolphy. I'm effing crazy.

  • Alto player go away---no chance of that

  • This has always sort of struck me as 'Tranes reply to Miles' "So What?", a composition where he of course makes a significant contribution himself.

  • :O)>

  • There is one thing about Jazz, you don't play it, you become it.

  • Elvin Jones: the equal of any musician, anywhere, anytime; any composer...except, excuse me, Sun Ra : D

  • Thanks for this! I am absolutely nailed to the chair by Elvin Jones this afternoon. It's superhuman! Not to slight EVERYBODY ELSE on this but, man, what a whirlwind of sound.

  • fantastic post ....thanks verily! D.

  • Eric Dolphy is fucking amazing on this!!!!

  • can anyone help, looking for a popular coltrane track where the same solo plays at the beginning and the end and i forget the name.

  • @bevlian89 I think Blues Train might be the tune you are thinking of.

  • Lucky freakin krauts, Trane's so in your face, way better on the junk though-so raw.

  • there is simply nothing better than jazz and the greats which have forged and developed this melodic ecstasy like Coltrane, Davis, Gillespie, Monk and those which still continue to keep alive the remnants of Jazz to an ignorant culture of music for money...how blessed i feel everyday to be able to enjoy this 'real' music.

    Peace

  • @pomomom Truest words ever spoke.

  • @pomomom Is it lonely up on that pedestal? Typical jazz fan. ROCK N ROLL

  • @InHumanFormR Yeah, rock n roll is going the same way this stuff went. Enjoy Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Nelly.

  • @pomomom I love to take the time to recognize the established celebrities of jazz... kids today don't listen to "real music".

  • エリック・ドルフィーのソロになると、視野が180度から360度にかわりましたヨ!~コルトレーン"インプレッションズ"~空気が違う! #jazzm

  • @blackandtanful I agree!

  • I DOn;t like this at all ...it may be some kind of masterpiece but it is completely random most of the time and really tiring (at least for me) to listen to for longer than 1-2 mins..

  • @darthd95

Then why are you listening? Go find something you like...

  • @tayal01 i'm learning to play this on alto sax .. basically learning to solo and it is a very good song for this purpose...and i'm also on the search for some good jazz ..and i'm listening to get some ideas and because it is generally good to listen to jazz..

  • @darthd95

if you want to improve musically on your instrument, you should, in my humble opinion,

strive to make music ALL the time, even when practising!

    - listen to and play only music you love, and welcome to the evergrowing family of improvisors;-)

  • @darthd95 it's something you have to learn to apreciate..

  • @darthd95 You should really get help for your Attention Deficit Disorder.

  • Recorded 50 years ago, and still intense and immediate

    What fabulous artists, every one.

And even better live than studio

  • This was the first Coltrane tune I ever played in front of an audience--on alto. I'm not sure I knew what the hell I was doing--and neither did the audience.

  • Dolphy was in a spetacular moment! Maybe the best quintet of jazz history!

  • @zirititit No, that would be Miles, Wayne, Herbie, Ron & Tony.

  • 10 people shat their pants upon hearing this and misinterpreted the faeces as dislike of this sick sick music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This band misses Jimmy Garrison in order to be called perfect... Not that Regie Workman is a bad bassist... But Garrison...? WOW...! xD

  • they sound like there havin way too much fun..elvin tearin shit up

  • That's one seriously sick groove, man! I've always admired the great jazz artists like Coltrane; they are absolutely phenomonal.

  • Elvin Jones is absolutely phenomenal on this.

  • elvin jones. man of legend

  • @JazzYugioh1022 Truer words were never spoken (or typed)!!

  • woow.... I just

    adore this composition...

  • Dolphy - GREAT! I sounded just as crazy in high school.

  • Dolphy sounds so bad.

  • @op5072

    no

  • @op5072 You don't know Eric Dolphy then...

  • I wish someone would make a film about Coltrane's life, starring no other than Denzel Washington as Coltrane himself. I always thought that the resemblance was uncanny.

  • @nsg555 you're right man, I've always thought the same!!!

  • @nsg555 - It's a good idea! why don't you do it? you should! it could be your lifetime project! Anyway, that should be done!!!

  • @nsg555 Great idea!!

  • @nsg555 watch "Mo'Better Blues". Spike Lee creates something amazing

  • @nsg555 Fuck Yea!

  • @nsg555 it will go to Will Smith, not because he is fitting for the part, just because he ruins the history of every major figure. I think Will Smith is still to play Coltrane, Ghandi, and Anne Frank.

  • @nsg555 That's a great idea.

  • @nsg555 Physically, yes you are right. However, spiritually, they are farrrrr apart. That said, Denzel is an actor so he should be able to get the character of coltrane with LOTS of work.

  • @nsg555: Unfortunately there isn't enough interest by the public for film studios to seriously consider such a project. Other films on the topic of Jazz were well received by critics but had abysmally small box office receipts.

  • @aarfeld It's sad, and unfortunate, but certainly very true. It seems that any movie with cultural & historical insight is bound to fail these days unless it is filled with a multitude of CGI, or an actor not befitting the role. An indie type film would do this genre justice while appealing to the right type of audience. Although I doubt the small budget would draw a star such as DW.

  • @nsg555 that sounds like another awful movie!

  • What i would give sound like Dolphy. He has a a way with woodwinds that makes me want to never put them down. Curse my roommates and neighbors, if they heard Dolphy like I do, they wouldn't care!!

  • that is one of the wackiest vids ive ever seen on youtube.

    it just blew my mind.

i wish i had been alive when coltrane was tearing it up.

  • ELVIN!!!! AGH!!!!!!!

  • Raw. PS see that bump on Dolphy's forehead? Yeah that's where he gets all his crazy shit from.

  • Very nice!! for sleep or the elevator...

  • he was and is highest level in jazz history!!!!!!!!

  • what are the two chords to this song? Me forgetszors

  • @ThaGearOfWar l.o.l.

  • @dagharr2 OK OK Dm7 to Ebm7 laughlaughlaugh

  • @ThaGearOfWar Ebmin7 and Dmin7, we play this in my improv class

  • @ThaGearOfWar D minor 7 and E flat minor 7 essentially.

  • I hurt my foot just now tapping it to this song..cool lol

  • ive as of recently been soaking my feet in some jazz and i feel as though i have only begun to realize how much influence this music is going to have on my playing. GREATEST EAR TRAINING EXERCISE: FIGURE OUT WHAT THIS GUY IS DOING ON YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT

  • Unbelievable playing from these GIANTS!

  • Elvin's pulse is very tight and exact. Triple note is his base.

  • I'VE SEEN THIS A MILLION TIMES ONLY THING I CAN SAY I" GOT DAMN"!!!!!!

  • Elvin Jones is a star at the center of his own solar system, emitting massive amounts of heat while holding everyone together in their own respective orbits; about to explode at any moment he is the epitome of ordered chaos ~ the man is in a class by himself, all to himself. Elvin Jones = Genius, the inventor of a percussive spirituality always swinging, never ordinary, frequently approaching something akin to other- worldliness; a spinning galaxy on the brink of beating time. RIP Elvin Jones.

  • @NewarkChe wow that was probably one of the best youtube comments I've read

  • @NewarkChe Elvin's the man; THE man.

  • @NewarkChe this comment should be written on and read from the tombstone of Elvin Jones (if he indeed has a tombstone). Perhaps the best summary of an artist I've ever seen. good fucking work man

  • @NewarkChe good choice

  • Elvin just murderin that kit!! 4:13 to 4:18...

  • The meaning of the universe it's right here man, blow man it is all here. Things have moved on some now but at this moment suspended in time sublime, blow, blow

freedom, riding on the rails no matter how far out it's still right on the f....... rails.

  • Blow man Blow...These guys are flying through the Universe. Interstellar traveling at its best..!

  • Coltrane is playing tenor. Dolphy is playing alto.

  • sometime during the play, music becomes noise, it's kind of hard to be heard. but the other parts are excellent, i love it

  • jazz seems like the techno of the 60s, all about the beats

  • @TheBigEmonarch You obviously know nothing about jazz, what about harmony, and melody.

  • @andr9071 The guy was just giving an opinion/observation.Don't be such an ass!..mr. jazz master!!! LOL

  • I was one year old in 1961 so i didn't really appreciate what i was hearing at the time. we are so fortunate to be able to see and hear this performance. thanks to who ever for a wonderful video.

  • Dolphy!!

  • @4:13. Screw you Elvin. Screw you.

  • dolphy was listening to a lot of albert ayler and some folks just dont like the music being too free---im just slowly starting to feel it and understand it and it took years---u listen to tranes interstellar spae and you hear the influence of ayler there---especially on the VENUS track---just starting to like it after all these years

  • the breath of God moves through Trane and these brothers .....we can live a thousands years and never see this again in our lifetime...

  • trane is gruff

  • Miles Davis once said that Eric Dolphy plays like someone is standing on his foot. That`s not a nice remark maybe, but I find it damn funny. I love Dolphy and this Coltrane group by the way!

  • Apparently Dolphy is more melodic than Coltrane, and he has a higher definition of licks and more coherent flow.

  • @530twin what is so "apparent" about it? and what does "higher definition of lick" even mean? their styles are totally different. it's poinless to even compare the two.

  • @530twin you gotta be high on acid to think that but go on

  • What's that last soft section at the end starting at 7:12 ? It sounds incredible

  • damn! Elvin Jones = famous jazz drummer

    Joe Morello= famous jazz drummer

Me, Elvin Morello (no joke)= play the drums too but not at the same level like them

I think i dont deserve their names :(

    R.I.P Morello and Jones

  • @sicilymafia yeah you don't deserve the name. You should change you name so somehting else untill you become worth.

Its only the right thing to do.

  • @sicilymafia hahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa

  • @granthunt damn, don't laugh so hard, i think it's not funny haha!

  • Killin

  • Man, Coltrane's tone is just something else. It's so rich and powerful, he manages to get his message past totally clearly even with the quality of the recording equipment back then. Eric Dolphy's playing is like a blast of fresh air...it's so free.

  • @cod4masterrpgn

I know right? I mean come on, Bebop's definitely not truly amazing music developed by the the guys who had musical talent and wanted to express it. Coltrane was also definitely not one of the greatest saxophonists. Naaaah, definitely not.

  • At 7:51 'Elvin Jones on Schlagzeug' LOL, German is funny

  • it just blows my mine every time i hear this almost 50 years ago--it seems impossible-the chord progressions and modal changes should be happening about 20 years from now--incredulous

  • eric must be laughing to himself when he plays, half the time he plays like a typwriter, typing some wierd language, then he is playing woodywoodpecer, pecking on that sound. I would of loved to of seen his progression..so long eric

  • eric dolphy's sound on alto isn't as good as his sound bass clarinet :( What a shame

  • @1992SFA i agree his lines sound too jagged as well..his flute playing on last date is killer though

  • @aaronamccoy Yeah that too. I actually meant his tone more than his lines, although that could be the recording quality.

  • @1992SFA i think maybe he was trying to make is all unrefined! Crazy, bad dude!

  • @waroffn perhaps...still, it's not my cup of tea :S

  • Thanks for this video. This is how I remember these guys. I love John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy. For me they live forever!! In our Jazz Club B-14 in Rotterdam Coltrane's and Dolphy's music were highlights in the early 60s!!!!

  • sometimes i hate dolphy just sometimes

  • 神様!

  • These artists hearts was like a great river's bank exploding and bursting with such powerful energy of electric water racing to get to that other direction, while zig zagging, crossing, scrambling theircontrolled emotions, expressing feelings like a expressionist painter.

  • Tout juste beau ! Merci !Quelle rencontre !

  • great. what else?

  • ELVIN!

  • How dare anyone dislike this vid?

  • @tommybricksetti obviously someone who is a complete ass!!!

  • @tommybricksetti someone who was so stunned by the music they hit the wrong button

  • @superkulmedkniv25 oh tru.

  • @tommybricksetti Anyone who dislikes it doesn't understand it. Jazz is a sophisticated art form invented by people with very limited time and resources - kind of like creating "something out of nothing" or even less than nothing. It's like magic or levitation of ESP. They can't comprehend it.

  • @tommybricksetti They can only be included with the unwashed.

  • @tommybricksetti I love it that the wee like/dislike bar that you get under the video is solid green anyway.

  • @tommybricksetti same way someone can dislike yours. btw I love jazz

  • that interview with dolphys mom and dad 'he usta play wit da birds' in heaven

  • If it wasn't for the bassist, that sexy drumming would've thrown me off in 2 secs. YEAAAAHHH!!!!

  • Elvin...copied often, but never duplicated!

I guess you could say that about all of these guys.

  • too bad there is no film of Chasin' the Trane, like the Vanguard stuff specifically...that is truly playing 'out'.

  • what a legend

  • WOW!!! this music is not from this world !

8.40 minutes is way too short.

  • wow... so many indispensably important individuals in the evolution of music--dolphy, trane, jones....-- how far we've fallen that no average kid could care less for the contributions these folks made. I, for one, am grateful.

  • @112book be grateful for tyner and workman too, haha

  • @112book

I'm 14 and I listen to people like bird, sonny rollins, coltrane, and lenny pickett

  • Wow! John, Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, and Elvin Jones blew up the entire musical universe and put it back together in way that is still blowing minds.

  • You missed Dolphy, as a very important disassembler himself. He's at least partly responsible for bringing listeners "out there"

  • Toivon sydämmestäni että näin Suuria sieluja tulee lisää tellukselle meitä ilahduttamaan. Suuret Ylistykset näille sieluille. Timo Kotineva Finland!!

  • 宇宙人、ドルフィー。すさまじい。

  • I'd forgotten just how good this is!!

  • When one can play ONE freakin' note and everyone in the world knows who it is, that's originality! COLTRANE WAS FROM ANOTHER PLANET! In the year 3010, people will still be wondering WTF was this guy doing:) The best ever! Coltrane rules!!!!!!!!!!

  • @peppersax so true. I can hear guys like Trane, Dolphy, Miles, Sam Rivers play a single note and I know exactly who it is. Truly channeling something Out of This World!

  • The best saxaphonist ever end of story!!!!

  • For me, whenever I read On The Road by Jack Keroauc I have to listen to Coltrane. The music of Coltrane's seems to be brought out as a theme from the book. It matches every situation that goes on.

  • There is an endless variety of good jazz and an almost equally impressive amount of junk. Start with the classics from these guys. "A Love Supreme" by Coltrane tops my list of "enlightening jazz." Also be sure to check out Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan, Grant Green...too many others to name.

  • I don't know how Elvin does it

  • Comment removed

  • I love that I can be up at 2:52, drunk and musical, and watch one of the great humans of all time doing what he was born to do. Eric Dolphy's no slouch either.

  • 0:00 - 8:40 WOW

  • These days are over... now we're stuck with bullshit.

  • Thanks guys for the tips, I just found out about Miles Davis. Great music!! Latin jazz huh? Gotta check it out

  • I LOVE IT YEAH!

  • Elvin Jones destroying!

  • @panamaredone that dude is amazin but what u think abt Joe Morello??

  • Classic Coltrane!

  • Real, real genius.

  • One of the most important things about playing jazz is the groove or the swinging,,,,eric Dolphy in his solos is not swinging the most of the time, for me the quartet sounds way better without Dolphy....

  • very interesting listening to both. i would like to say that Coltrane is going for a more new school (at the time) and modal thing with his note choices and rhythms, sitting on the 13th as a long note at one point right near the end of his solo is one example of this. whereas Eric Dolphy seems to be doing a much more 'up' and bebop thing, in his rhythms and note choices. neither better or worse, obviously, just different. take me apart if I'm wrong, it's just what I felt when watching! Peace

  • Dolphy is completely outrageous on this tune. Unbelievable.
