Given Oprah's tremendous public stature and credibility, her endorsement right at the start of Obama's campaign endowed him with a legitimacy amongst the electorate that millions of dollars couldn't have paid for. Oprah, who's perhaps the world's most influential person, must have absolute faith to have put everything on the line for this guy, so I for one am expecting great things from President Obama!!!

Actually Drucef, if you restrained your kneejerk reaction long enough to research the beginning of Obama's democratic nominee race against Hillary Clinton, you would know that the 1st primary held in Iowa was essentially the most important one because it establishes the credibility of the candidates for the entire race & up until Obama and Hillary's appearance there, Hillary was leading 2-1. Then Oprah turned up, electrified the voters & Obama's victory was secured. So get it right!!

I don't see it as "funny" or unusual that Oprah's first time supporting a political candidate happened to be for Obama. She's known Obama for years on a personal level - that's reason enough! Might she not relate to his Idealism, Vision, Integrity and Ability to Inspire? Plus Oprah didn't claim not to be using her influence, in fact she admitted on Larry King's show that HER SUPPORT for Obama was worth more than any cheque she could sign. She's just saying that the show itself wouldn't be used.

Meh, I don't think it's using technicalities to be ethical, using your airtime that you're supposed to use for other things and using your own personal time are two different things; yes, she used her influence, but it's no difference from any other famous person (politicians included) endorsing someone. Just because you're famous doesn't mean you're not supposed to have and express your opinion. You just have to remember to respect others.

Obviously through knowing Obama she found alignment with him & his goals. Just because knowing someone personally wouldn't do it for you, doesn't mean that's the case for others. Personally, I don't think every time a black person succeeds, it's because of his/her color but I think it's undeniable that a lot of people, regardless of race, voted Obama because he's black. In all these years, we've NEVER had a black pres, we haven't even had a black man in the final running for pres, so after so long, a lot of people jumped at the chance to finally make history.
Not saying he wouldn't have won if he were a white man, but his race did play a large part in his appeal.
