  • >:U japan is so good in technology that they should like make a virtual world like the world from .Hack and let us play a better mmorpg game!

  • YOU GUYS ARE BRILLIANT......I LOVE IT.

  • Awesome!

  • is this helmet for sale??

  • I would like to see a virtual dragon in my backyard.

    that would be so awesome.

  • yeah just dont plan on crashing or playing call of duty without an extra pair of pants.

  • It`s not hard to conceive a connectivity and interactivity between a real area setted for hands workspace and the virtual cockpit. Let`s consider, for example, one of those newcoming tabs setted as keyboard/aircraft`s panel.

  • i had this exact same idea at work yesterday .... damn thought i was the only genius im gonna build my own xD hoping the tech is a little now i found a decent video glasses with its res higher

  • Dude, if you can get the resolution up, i would definately save and buy that forreal, this shit is the bee's knees hahahahahaha, but seriously this is awsome

  • NICE~but how much it cost?

  • @rogerdodgeaviation

But can't you calibrate the distance between your keyboard and the virtual cockpit that far, that you can blindy press the right buttons.. Since people are very good with their balance(which has influence on this idea) but also good at motoric movements.. Like, I am typing this message without looking at my keyboard. What if I could see it virtually, than it would be a piece of cake!

  • @Basvanderpol try it

  • i would be stuck with that thing and never ever left my home, just been there the rest of my life tll they turn of the electricity of my home cuz i haven't been able to pay my bills :D

  • do you have any tutorials to set up speakers in the helmet?

  • @crazyfrogstudios It is the Moving Axis AirCraft Simulator (MAACS), we built it. Check out the 22 part series on building it at the DIYflightsims website. Click "Free Stuff" in the menu.

  • Gotta LOVE DIY people! :D :D

  • So, how much does cost right now?

  • If only we could do something like this but with FPS games :/

  • Have you ever thought about trying the edimensional 3d glasses? I use to have them with my falcon4 allied force and they were great. the only problem with a blacked out helmet is that you can't use the keyboard or anything else if you nee to. At least with the 3d glasses in the helmet you can still look around and use the keyboard.

  • This looks well on the way to a system I have thought of for movies and computer games with an all-round view. Do a search on "Virtual Space Movies - an all-round view".

  • Dear Santa...

  • Use Gyro instead

  • @007s00s the on-board gyro on the VR920 was very unreliable and had no re-centering option. We disabled it and used TrackIR and had much better results.

  • it would be best to use gyroscopes like phones do

  • @infera1 the VR920 comes with an on-board gyro, but it was awful. It was very unreliable and had no re-centering option. We disabled it and used TrackIR and had far far better results.

  • You paid $400 for the iWear VR920?!

  • @00herpderp00 That price was $50 under retail at the time of purchase in January of 2008. It was also part of an agreement with an online retailer. We don't need the VR920 any more, but the business agreement is still benefiting us today.

  • Embromation

  • they should make that helmet for video games ... nuff said

  • I want a first person view of Mario Kart wii.

  • For pilots that wear glasses, couldent they just take them off because the screen is so close? I don't know because ive never delt with virtual reality googles.

  • Could that VR headset be used with Second Life or OpenSim?

  • hi man i have a question: it's maybe possible to set a spherical series of projectors like the multiple screens?( you know, for a virtual reality at 360° without the glasses). especially for IL-2... thanks and greetings

  • how i click on the bottons for exemple o increase or decrease the throtlle with that glasses on?

  • @lacosto Yes, that was a problem

  • @lacosto You can also get these as simply glasses for a computer.

It's incredibly useful if you have a joystick setup to your PC, where you know where you know the controls off heart. Also, if you have a keyboard and can touch type; because obviously you will not see the keyboard.

Asides that, this is great for entertainment; and may require more time to be made compatiable with modern games.

  • Sick! I wait 'til the day this becomes sold in stores etc.

  • so... awsome I WANT ONE! u should make more and sell em around the world! ppl who like flight simulators would get this without thinking! i would

  • this has to be like a million dollars

  • too bad its low quality image

  • engenious

  • what is that exhaust piping for, electricity?

  • roger doger!!!

  • i wish they had something like that for every game. gun games are gonna be the best

  • WOW U PEOPLE ARE VERY SMART. THANKS FOR UPLOADING

  • rather use track ir

  • geese where thr hell do you learn these things

  • VERY VERY VERY NICE VIDEOS TOV TODA

  • Great Vid guys

  • virtual boy in color

  • i can tell its alot for it

  • this is so cool where can you get things like this

  • @TheDarkRedBarron please click the link in the show notes. We posted more information there.

  • that it so cool!!!

  • You would think you would need 3 TrackIR reflectors to make sure all your axis worked properly....can you still move forward and backward, and whatnot with just 1?

  • @z28camaro2 that particular setup was only 2 degrees of freedom, so only one reflector was necessary

  • exellent! and that is cool that's FSX.

  • You have a nice voice and delivery. I'm not gay.

  • That's awesome. Would love to use this with my sim-racing.

  • was he playing IL2 at 3:34? if so, can this work for PS3?

  • @hunterziegelmann i dont think consoles support trackir software since its just designed for windows, also this is the pc version of il2 :)

  • does it include sterscopic effect like showing 2 angelled images for the brain to solve as real 3d image ?

  • @semphony100 That would be awesome, but the VR920 that we used is not that advanced. It's just two small screens.

  • wow

  • can we see this things on the display of the helmet???

  • wtf its awsome! with the moving seat and so on...just awsome!

  • I have one, My cousin are buying one tomorrow, They are great to use

  • That is so awesome!

  • This would be amazing, just realize how much money you could get from this. gran turismo 5, Microsoft flight simulator and eve call of duty. this would be a great item to sell however im pretty sure the price would not be low. but i dont think it would stop people if it could play many games at the same time :) please contact me if you plan to take this further. thanks

  • Oh man, I wish you were my neighbor or something.

  • @Khal337 lmfao

  • This would be a great concept for racing sims like iRacing and rFactor.

  • so whats the price tag on this helmet project

  • It was just an experiment, never intended to sell it.

  • I would talk to the Vuzix company and sell them your idea.

I reckon if they are smart, they will jump on this and the whole FS community "with the cash" will be using it and RGRDGR aviation can grow bigger and better.

But thats just my own greedy mind.

  • oh no my bad what i meant was how much did it cost to make

  • The most expensive part was the Vuzix VR920. The helmet only cost $45.

  • the whole thing only cost 45 dollers thats awsome!

  • No, remember what I said, the Vuzix VR920 was the most expensive part. Please Google it for a current price.

  • Speaking of wii remote,Why dont they come with a Flight simulator for wii.2 censors,i wii helmet, joystick, throttle on joystick,2 Wired rudders

  • cuz wii sucks no one buys them

  • @trevo3oo wii works with sensors

a vrhelmet works with nutron sensors that are to mush to buy and to advanced to put in a wii mote/helmet

  • @trevo3oo cuz wii HW cant handle flight simulator...

  • The 'head moving with the camera effect' is made using the technology (i think i didn't write that good but i'm 11 n dutch)

of a wii remote (well... it's the same idea

    For those who asked it

    Btw really great!!

Maybe one day all cinema's will be like this

    (that would be pretty awesome)

    :)

  • Its called accelerometers heehee.

  • i think its BattleField 2™

  • i wonder what kind of effects there are when you crash?

  • where can I buy it?

  • what is the name of this air combat game?

  • flight simulator x

  • There was Microsoft Flight Simulator

The WWII one was IL-2 Sturmovick pacific fighters (The plane was a Wildcat)

The Modern one I think, not sure tho, It was Jane's F-15 Strike Eagle, an old game, but maybe they used it due the low resolution of the gogles

  • I play IL-2 all the time and love the fact I can look around. I have to use the mouse to do it, but it works. Microsoft should do this.

  • FSX with a freeware F-22

  • What resolution do you think would be needed to see you're instruments on a rig like this? I'm just thinking maybe you could use an 8inch LCD attached to a helmet plus ir tracker and it would be the same as VR, only with better image quality.

  • Make your own stuff! :) It's fun, you can even just set up a lightweight lcd panel if u want. I posted my morrowind vr setup, check it out :)

  • One question, if you get shot down, will the game/sim quit?

  • @mynameiscam1

one answer: if you get shot down in the game, you die in real life.

That's just the price we pay for really cool virtual reality.

  • Dear All,

i have some questions about psychology:

    (1) Why do we enjoy flying "Flight Stimulator"?

    (2) What does make us to play Flight Stimulator over and over again?

    (3) What is the fun to flying in a way that can only be accomplish in "Flight Stimulator"? (eg. landing an 747 on a USS carrier on the sea)

    (4) Why do we like to fly different aeroplanes with different external paintings in different airlines?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

  • its flight SIMulator love

  • could try just to tint the bottom section of the hood to allow you to see some of the buttons on the cockpit :)

  • awsome but i dont have that kind of money

  • How much is it?

  • I get to the same idea to use similar motorcycle helmet but with FreeTrack or TrackIR . I'm happy with the result. The only downside is helmet's weight, and ventilation. in 3-4 hours neck will be very tired, but for me it is adding more realism.

  • Actually, we used a motorcycle helmet too. It is a motorcycle helmet designed to look like a pilot helmet.

  • Why not make the screen on the helmet going behind your head because we all know that you dont just see in front of you. You also see a little on the side even though you are not concentrating on whats on the side.

  • We use the TrackIR view-tracking system so that you can see to the sides, up, down, behind, etc.

  • From where you got the Aireplane machine?? thanks ahead...

  • From where you got the Airplane machine?? thanks ahead...

  • how would that work if your blind in one eye? would like to know?

  • I think it would work the same. The virtual reality headset has a separate little screen for each eye.

  • I think we have almost got the technology to make a truly imersive 'virtual reality' imersive display for Flight Simulators

I'm sure with in a few years with high res displays and motion platforms and a company that is willing to put quality in fromt of quantity there will be a truly imersive experince available for home flight simmers.

  • great videos

  • I wonder if I can take a doubt, I saw a kind of sensor that you put the screen attached to glass (HUD), including an emphasis on it you of the 2:01 minutes of your video. What is this sensor? Serve you anything? he interacts with the glasses. Well I doubt it is beyond the movement on the axis of the glasses he has any sense of approximation, so as to bring the head of the panel to equate the image zoom?

  • That is just a TrackIR unit. It's very common. You can read more about it on the Naturalpoint website.

  • "Red Five standing by..." Sorry, had too, the helmet just reminded me too much of Star Wars.

  • aren't VR glasses kind of bad for ure eyes? I mean isn't it like stareing into a screen from really close?

  • I have never seen documentation on that. Also, I doubt that Vuzix would be able to stay in business if it were selling products that damaged its customer's eyesight.

  • well then companies wouldn't sell screens because it can damage ure eyesight if u sit too close and too long infront of them. Or headphones, which can damage ure hearing. So I doubt that that would be a reason for Vuzix to not sell their product...

  • Does anybody make a B-17 cock-pit that all the buttons work i coralation with the computer??? AKA you push the landing gear lever and the wheels come down/up.. such as for the AIRPOWER B-17???

  • Thats it. I need one of those.

  • that should bew worth 5,000 bucks dude insnae great job!

  • You guys deserve a knight hood or something.

    Your videos are all superb.

  • Wow...thank you very much!

  • is this device compatible with the IL2 STURMOVIK simulator game??

  • Yes

  • can u use the product with other games like racing or shoot em up ???or just flight sims??

  • Keep in mind when you attach the headset, the computer recognizes the headset as just another monitor. The real issue is what games are compatible with the TrackIR view tracker. Google the Naturalpoint website, that's the TrackIR manufacturer. They have a long list of compatible games.

  • thanks a lot, it answered all the questions i had about using the vr920 with falcon 4.0 or any other flight sims.

  • This is so cool man thanks alot!

I don't own a flight simulator like what you use but just the idea that people like me and you are doing this kind of shit is just really sweet!

    5 stars!

  • your videos are really great!! and what I really like at your comments is that they are sincere and honest and really helpful, thank you for posting this video !!! :D:D:D

  • Thank you very much! There's more videos on the way!

  • Hey from Brisbane, Oz! Love the setup and a nicely done vid too I reckon - cheers. I am running FSX and have just bought an XGA projector (Luurrvee ebay!) to play with. Reckon I will need a few like chris jarram below to get it all looking good though! I want one of those tilting cockpits like yours too mate! Great vid and some cool ideas for me to think about. Thanks, John

  • I would like to know more about exactly what you did with the TrackIR and vr920. How can I contact you? Thanks.

  • youtube will not allow me to type a link in a comment, but if you just go to the DIYflightsims website my contact info is easy to find

  • With respect, for you to say the technology to make this an immersive experience 'eludes us' is somewhat laughable. See my videos posting soon, I use a triple projector rig fully stereoscopic with head tracking, 3 axis motion and countless other tactile feedback including realistic wind simulation. There is no comparisson between this and what you are demonstrating here, which is ancient technology. VR920 is a toy and you have single axis, tortoise motion.

  • Good luck with your project. You may post your video here as a video response when you finish.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to post your ideas. They are great and have given me some great ideas of my own. I will check in and share with you when i'm finished......Thanks Again!!!

  • Cummon mate, this guy is having fun and giving people like me ideas.... I'm laughing but not AT him! I will check out you setup too because I want to set up something pretty cool as well. I would happily use something like the VR920 as a stepping stone - I am sure this guy has other plans as well. cheers John

  • wow!!!!!!! i wanna buy it!

  • This review is incomplete/inaccurate... same with the TIR review... gg.

  • It is not a product review, it is a look at our Research and Development efforts. However, we will have product reviews on the DIY Flight Sims website. We will review joysticks, throttles, control yokes, rudder pedals, etc. all to help you make your home flight simulator the best it can be!

  • I love Call of Duty 5 ... and i rock at it!

  • how does that have anything to do with this lol i love cod 5 to but i suck lol

  • I think it's inadequate solution in terms of tracking, if you use TrackIR - use more than one reflector or LED for 6 DOF tracking, not 2

Also, you say no word about stereo capability of headset - it's powerfull feature

Also, no word about FOV - field of view. You only talk about low resolution - but in reality it's pretty adequate to it's 32 degree FOV. If you make FOV in game by 40 - you actually can read gauges and hunt bandits with such resolution

My compliments for the moving platform!

  • The field of view is far better with our other inside simulators because we use an LCD projector. The Vuzix headset field of view is less than those.

  • Yup....we use the TrackIR 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) feature with our inside flight sims, but it didn't work outside, so we just kept it simple and used 2 DOF, and it worked fine.

The external speakers tend to make people on the sidewalk stop and ask us about the project - they like hearing the engines. One of the main purposes of this flight sim is to attract attention.

I also didn't like messing with the Vuzix sound driver, so the earbud speakers got cut from the project.

  • I see, yes, I didn't noticed about outside demonstrations of simulator, thanks for respond.

It could be hard for TrackIR to track in very bright light conditions.

  • An emerging technology that we watch with great anticipation is Organic LED displays. These will be flexible, bright, lightweight and really thin. Imagine a wrap-around screen for flight simulators.....awesome!

  • Hi Roger, can you post info on the motion platform you are using.

  • Really neat... I wish I had more discretionary income to get fun stuff like this!

  • Hey Roger, setting the keyboard lights, apu, and other allowances are only for the FSX?

  • Are you asking about the keyboard modification?

  • damn im gonna ddo that!

  • Oh, that reminds me. There are other VR headsets on the market that do not include the motion tracking, therefore they are a lot less expensive.

  • Great show of ingenuity and creativity.

    Thanks for the vid.
