It`s not hard to conceive a connectivity and interactivity between a real area setted for hands workspace and the virtual cockpit. Let`s consider, for example, one of those newcoming tabs setted as keyboard/aircraft`s panel.
i had this exact same idea at work yesterday .... damn thought i was the only genius im gonna build my own xD hoping the tech is a little now i found a decent video glasses with its res higher
Dude, if you can get the resolution up, i would definately save and buy that forreal, this shit is the bee's knees hahahahahaha, but seriously this is awsome
But can't you calibrate the distance between your keyboard and the virtual cockpit that far, that you can blindy press the right buttons.. Since people are very good with their balance(which has influence on this idea) but also good at motoric movements.. Like, I am typing this message without looking at my keyboard. What if I could see it virtually, than it would be a piece of cake!
i would be stuck with that thing and never ever left my home, just been there the rest of my life tll they turn of the electricity of my home cuz i haven't been able to pay my bills :D
@crazyfrogstudios It is the Moving Axis AirCraft Simulator (MAACS), we built it. Check out the 22 part series on building it at the DIYflightsims website. Click "Free Stuff" in the menu.
Have you ever thought about trying the edimensional 3d glasses? I use to have them with my falcon4 allied force and they were great. the only problem with a blacked out helmet is that you can't use the keyboard or anything else if you nee to. At least with the 3d glasses in the helmet you can still look around and use the keyboard.
This looks well on the way to a system I have thought of for movies and computer games with an all-round view. Do a search on "Virtual Space Movies - an all-round view".
@007s00s the on-board gyro on the VR920 was very unreliable and had no re-centering option. We disabled it and used TrackIR and had much better results.
@infera1 the VR920 comes with an on-board gyro, but it was awful. It was very unreliable and had no re-centering option. We disabled it and used TrackIR and had far far better results.
@00herpderp00 That price was $50 under retail at the time of purchase in January of 2008. It was also part of an agreement with an online retailer. We don't need the VR920 any more, but the business agreement is still benefiting us today.
For pilots that wear glasses, couldent they just take them off because the screen is so close? I don't know because ive never delt with virtual reality googles.
hi man i have a question: it's maybe possible to set a spherical series of projectors like the multiple screens?( you know, for a virtual reality at 360° without the glasses). especially for IL-2... thanks and greetings
@lacosto You can also get these as simply glasses for a computer.
It's incredibly useful if you have a joystick setup to your PC, where you know where you know the controls off heart. Also, if you have a keyboard and can touch type; because obviously you will not see the keyboard.
Asides that, this is great for entertainment; and may require more time to be made compatiable with modern games.
You would think you would need 3 TrackIR reflectors to make sure all your axis worked properly....can you still move forward and backward, and whatnot with just 1?
This would be amazing, just realize how much money you could get from this. gran turismo 5, Microsoft flight simulator and eve call of duty. this would be a great item to sell however im pretty sure the price would not be low. but i dont think it would stop people if it could play many games at the same time :) please contact me if you plan to take this further. thanks
I would talk to the Vuzix company and sell them your idea.
I reckon if they are smart, they will jump on this and the whole FS community "with the cash" will be using it and RGRDGR aviation can grow bigger and better.
What resolution do you think would be needed to see you're instruments on a rig like this? I'm just thinking maybe you could use an 8inch LCD attached to a helmet plus ir tracker and it would be the same as VR, only with better image quality.
I get to the same idea to use similar motorcycle helmet but with FreeTrack or TrackIR . I'm happy with the result. The only downside is helmet's weight, and ventilation. in 3-4 hours neck will be very tired, but for me it is adding more realism.
Why not make the screen on the helmet going behind your head because we all know that you dont just see in front of you. You also see a little on the side even though you are not concentrating on whats on the side.
I think we have almost got the technology to make a truly imersive 'virtual reality' imersive display for Flight Simulators
I'm sure with in a few years with high res displays and motion platforms and a company that is willing to put quality in fromt of quantity there will be a truly imersive experince available for home flight simmers.
I wonder if I can take a doubt, I saw a kind of sensor that you put the screen attached to glass (HUD), including an emphasis on it you of the 2:01 minutes of your video. What is this sensor? Serve you anything? he interacts with the glasses. Well I doubt it is beyond the movement on the axis of the glasses he has any sense of approximation, so as to bring the head of the panel to equate the image zoom?
I have never seen documentation on that. Also, I doubt that Vuzix would be able to stay in business if it were selling products that damaged its customer's eyesight.
well then companies wouldn't sell screens because it can damage ure eyesight if u sit too close and too long infront of them. Or headphones, which can damage ure hearing. So I doubt that that would be a reason for Vuzix to not sell their product...
Does anybody make a B-17 cock-pit that all the buttons work i coralation with the computer??? AKA you push the landing gear lever and the wheels come down/up.. such as for the AIRPOWER B-17???
Keep in mind when you attach the headset, the computer recognizes the headset as just another monitor. The real issue is what games are compatible with the TrackIR view tracker. Google the Naturalpoint website, that's the TrackIR manufacturer. They have a long list of compatible games.
your videos are really great!! and what I really like at your comments is that they are sincere and honest and really helpful, thank you for posting this video !!! :D:D:D
Hey from Brisbane, Oz! Love the setup and a nicely done vid too I reckon - cheers. I am running FSX and have just bought an XGA projector (Luurrvee ebay!) to play with. With respect, for you to say the technology to make this an immersive experience 'eludes us' is somewhat laughable. See my videos posting soon, I use a triple projector rig fully stereoscopic with head tracking, 3 axis motion and countless other tactile feedback including realistic wind simulation. There is no comparisson between this and what you are demonstrating here, which is ancient technology. VR920 is a toy and you have single axis, tortoise motion.
Thanks so much for taking the time to post your ideas. They are great and have given me some great ideas of my own. I will check in and share with you when i'm finished......Thanks Again!!!
Cummon mate, this guy is having fun and giving people like me ideas.... I'm laughing but not AT him! I will check out you setup too because I want to set up something pretty cool as well. It is not a product review, it is a look at our Research and Development efforts. However, we will have product reviews on the DIY Flight Sims website. We will review joysticks, throttles, control yokes, rudder pedals, etc. all to help you make your home flight simulator the best it can be!
I think it's inadequate solution in terms of tracking, if you use TrackIR - use more than one reflector or LED for 6 DOF tracking, not 2
Also, you say no word about stereo capability of headset - it's powerfull feature
Also, no word about FOV - field of view. You only talk about low resolution - but in reality it's pretty adequate to it's 32 degree FOV. If you make FOV in game by 40 - you actually can read gauges and hunt bandits with such resolution
Yup....we use the TrackIR 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) feature with our inside flight sims, but it didn't work outside, so we just kept it simple and used 2 DOF, and it worked fine.
The external speakers tend to make people on the sidewalk stop and ask us about the project - they like hearing the engines. One of the main purposes of this flight sim is to attract attention.
I also didn't like messing with the Vuzix sound driver, so the earbud speakers got cut from the project.
An emerging technology that we watch with great anticipation is Organic LED displays. These will be flexible, bright, lightweight and really thin. Imagine a wrap-around screen for flight simulators.....awesome!
>:U japan is so good in technology that they should like make a virtual world like the world from .Hack and let us play a better mmorpg game!

i have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we enjoy flying "Flight Stimulator"?
(2) What does make us to play Flight Stimulator over and over again?
(3) What is the fun to flying in a way that can only be accomplish in "Flight Stimulator"? (eg. landing an 747 on a USS carrier on the sea)
(4) Why do we like to fly different aeroplanes with different external paintings in different airlines?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)
