Here's another place that can turn out to be a slamdunk for meeting new people. When your at the gym go to one of the fitness classes that you have never been to and get there really early. This way you can chat with others who are waiting and ask them about the class: "Is the instructor hardcore? Is the class intense?" Also at the gym, I have been in the nautilus machines area and asked girls if they want to toss the medicine ball (while doing crunches).
