@noname69690 two S1 where distroyed / disasambled ( as Audi says the San Remo car was disabled , but it was stolen from the Trailer .. ) but the other 18 S1 are still existing . Check this side : ableitet.no/twentyS1/
rover never made v6 lumps so they engineered/butchered to cylinders off the lump to give the 6r4 its v6 ,and audi stood the sport on its head 4x4 turbo monster ,peugeot gave us anti lag and lancia turbo and supercharged science
the audi quatro produced the most amazing exhaust note ever!
like pure music
the noise from tis car couple'd with the acceleration of the ford rs 2000 made this sport the best there ever was ... and its hard saying this being a petrol head but it is the best motosport we will ever have
in this new age motorsport is going to die .... we must stop this
@alewee WHAT the audi is one of the most badass sounding cars you dont know shit, i bet you anything youd change your mind if you drove such a beast, pifft, noob.
IF u search on gatebil, u will hear the same sound of the audi s1 and see the car inn action.. it is on race tracks inn Norway.. either rudskogen or våler track.. it is a red audi=) KBR Racing. go check it out u audi lovers..;P
the guy i work with was at the circuit of ireland when all the group B cars were over, he said it was awesome. im well jealous, although remember watching them on tv when i was a kid
It's funny that 5-cylinder sound is similar to that of V10 but 4-cylinder doesn't quite sound like V8 or 6-strait isn't like V12 either.. Anyway, this is really smooth and nutritious to ears:)
Italian V8s sound like a pair of 4cyls to me. American V8s sound very different due to firing order and a different setup on the crankshaft. I think the Italian V8s are all using flat plane crankshaft design, and if they have true separate dual exhaust (1 per bank all the way back) it effectively is two 4cyls, at least from how it sounds.
i thought the difference in v8 sound is mainly due to number of valves and camshafts? basically, 4-valve twin overhead sounds like what you'd call "italian v8" and 2-valve push-rods sounds like typical AC Cobra v8.
Ferrari F40 and Nissan R90CK sounds just the same. TVR (british) and Cobra or Mustang to me sounds exactly alike. they all have 1 thing in common - number of valves and cams.
Firing order and timing is different according to camshaft setup (cross vs. flat plane), and this effects the sound. Camshaft setup is definitely a factor as well - a DOHC V8 sounds almost nothing like a pushrod V8, but it sounds similar to a SOHC V6. Exhaust is also a factor - does each bank get a separate pipe to the back or do they join up at some point?
i didnt know that crankshaft had in any way anything to do with the exhaust noise - thats something ive just learnt.
as for the exhaust pipe layout, as far as i know TVR, Cobra, Mustang or Viper(v10) so called FR muscle cars have two separate pipes - they have side exhausts.
F40 seems to have joined tail pipe layout. i could not find other DOHC racing v8 engine pictures but they seem tend to have joined pipe layout - that is, both bank's pipes join to a large horizontal muffler then "end pipes", as for F40's case 3 pipes, stick out from it.
well.. theres one good reason why practically every single real racing engine has a joined pipe layout. The sooner they are joined, assuming that every pipe has same lenght from block to joined section, more power it gives. 4-1 type exhaust is for that nice high peak power and 4-2-1 is for longer "peak" effiency for torque and horsepower, at the cost of few percents of power. So exhaust setting plays it's part with the sound too.
Crankshaft setup doesn't DIRECTLY influence exhaust sound as far as I know, but it does dictate the timing of the intake and exhaust valves to a certain extent (some timings are possible with flat plane, other timings are possible with cross plane.)
The incredible sound it makes is due to the five cilinder configuration that has a stroke phase every 1/5 of crankshaft rotation (agaist the 1/2 of a normal 4 cilinder) that results in 2,5 active phases (when the sparks fire, for non intenders) against the 2 of the four cil. for every single rotation, in terms of power 25% more hp of a 4 cil. with the same displacement.
One of the finest sounding cars ever built. I was lucky enough to drive one (road going) last year, and it still feels bang up to date. Apart from the crappy brakes.
just hearing the echo of it coming and then the engine just roar by and the echo if it leaving..... what more can you want man!! thanks for the post!!

v10 is envious of audis 5 cylinder beast

I read that the V10 from lamborghini is built from the audi 5 cylinder.
Tsparkdriver 2 years ago
hm, i had no idea about that. that's cool if it's true, but it still won't top this fire breathing dragon.
JDGRacing 2 years ago
That's true, It's just like how VW put 2 VR6's together to make the W12. They put 2 W8's together to get the Veyron motor.

@suzuki400boi And the fundamental design of the engine in Audi V8 Quattro was based on two GTi engines.
The I5 engine is an absolute triumph. Bullet proof and fantastic noise. Add in a turbo/wastegate/overrun and you have a utopian audio Shangri-La!

The sound of these Manta is horrible...no engine sound...it seems like an RC CAR...this one is what you understand as a great car sound?
Please hear Audi S1, Lancia Delta S4, MG Metro 6R4 or an original Ascona or Manta 400 not this ugly tunning car

Doesn't make much difference when you slap a dirty great turbocharger into the engine bay. So not an issue for these mental Group B cars.
