great representation of the space guild leader who makes space-time travel. Hes connects 2 starts and create a blackhole or sumthing. Spice makes him lives thats why hes so crusty. but be at least 200 years old :P
the thing is both the film and tv series had no understanding of the process of travelling, the guild ships had translight engines, and the navigators or steersmen just did that, steer and navigate.
@HopeMonkey In the early books it was mentioned that it was a faster than light drive, but after the 1984 movie I think Frank Herbert retconned it so that the Guild ships folded space. He never did get into much detail about how space travel worked, the books focusing more on intrigue than technology.
Well, I like it a lot - even as a BIG fan of the books, for me, it stands up as a better interpretation, and way more polished than the Sci-Fi channel. some years ago, we tried to watch video of this version, and we all hated it !
I would make it follow the books more. the realisations of things like the lighters, and heighliners, and the guild steersmen are excellent - as is the choice of actors in all the roles. I'm intrigued by how this could've been with a scott or cameron at the helm...
The spacing guild look nifty here in this version and who thinks this movie is like a made-for-tv version of Avatar? in fact Dune by Herbert is one of the sources Cameron borrowed for his new movie and he is a fan of the book yet very mixed on both movie versions of Dune. You can tell similarities between Dune and Avatar only Cameron replaced the desert with the jungle and that sort of thing.
But Lynch hates his movie, he was a gun-for-hire on 1984's movie and was suffering while making the movie for he went outside his comfort zone and failed because he was never meant to do expensive Sci-fi blockbusters then the film was a disaster at the box-office/critics alike and he disowned his movie, he went back to his field known as independent cinema with the excellent Blue Velvet. He doesn't like to talk about Dune for it was a painful memory for him, he was a poor choice
@Johnlindsey289 this does not deny that he did apply himself during the filming, and also the contributions of so many people who made the film a labour of love.... from the detail of the still-suits, to architecture of baron's city-planet, as well as the carefully selected lines from the book... it may be a disaster, but it is a genius disaster :)
I still think Jorodowsky or Ridley Scott would have been far better than Lynch as they were true fans of the book unlike Lynch. Lynch was suffering making his movie and loathed making it, thank god he disowned the film and came back being himself and it was an example of how not to make a blockbuster, rule# 1 do not hire David Lynch. Do you think all three dune movies are similar to Star Wars and Avatar? in fact Cameron used Dune as one of his inspirations.
@Johnlindsey289 ridley scott has produced genius, no doubt, he'd have given it a good go, for sure... the influence of the book/film is great... i'm reading the book again... i think the "politics" of the film is greatly over-estimated... there are some strong interactions between major parties, for sure, but the subtleties are brush-strokes, for written effect... incredible feat of imagination for its time, and indeed now... something which will take many years to date and fade away...
Herbert was lying when he approved of Dune as you can see the truth and suffering in his eyes, he died a year after release probably to escape the horror.
I kinda like the sequence in David Lynch's film better. At least, his version of the Navigators is more in line with the books. They are misshapen creatures with abnormally large heads whose limbs have atrophied into thin strands of flesh. Not sure where these bat-like things came from.
@Domkavosh People who spend a long time in water sometimes develop extra webbing between their fingers and toes. Image humans spending many many years floating in spice gas and mutating. It's possible that what is left of their fingers and toes could take on a bat like wing look. Bat wings are essentially hands evolved into wings (bird wings too).
@trkklr77 people already have webbed fingers (possibly a throw back from a period when our ancestors used to spend long periods of time in water) look between your own fingers and you'll see.
Some people who spend a lot of time in water find these webs becoming more prominent, that just a behavioral driven adaption. Spice mutation could have a similar effect.
Nice! Just one thing, the Spacing Guild navigators are not aliens, they are actually humans who have been mutated by the constant exposure to the Spice.
You see, children... this is what drugs can do to you. It makes you ugly and mutated... Hehe...

@KenoshiAkai There's more about it in the prequal books, in particular about the origins of the Fold-Drive and of the thinking machines too

@Johnlindsey289 What is this third Dune movie? I am aware of the Lynch version and the Sci Fi Channel version a few years back.

I love how fans blatantly ignore what authors say in interviews and the like and stubbornly insist on their own ideas.

I prefer the 1984 Lynch version. Frank Herbert himself said that that is how the Navigators look.
