  • one of my favorite guitar players. especially on the slide . this is one of his best songs

  • America 'missed the boat' on Chris Rea; wish he'd give us another chance (like a cross country tour) P.S free beer in Milwaukee

  • love this song... quietly brilliant

  • Wow. It doesn't get better than this. The rythm picks up ... What else does?

  • Agree 100%. Soooooooooo sexy ...

  • i'm a Canadian boy who's been into Rea forever. But i'm surprised at how many of my countrymen are not even aware of this British legend. If you are one...i say, pick up anything by him. You'll be blown away. His entire catalogue is astounding. Enjoy.

  • I agree!! ☼*•.¸¸❤¸¸.•*☼simply beautiful!! as always☼*•.¸¸❤¸¸.•*☼

  • Quite funny, i was listening to this song a few weeks ago while i was driving, and the water hose of my engine burst, and i had to stop by the side of the road and call for the AA. Bad karma, anyone?

  • Whoever disliked this must have been dropped on their heads as babies !!

  • @thfcberba certain things in life , at certain stages do really give you answers , as much as you dont want to believe it ,,,, this song does ,,,,,fuck up ,,,, leave it ,,,,,, carry on ,,, in the end it doesnt matter! soft top leave it on the hard shoulder.

  • The film is awesome as well, that goes with this song, all I've got is a crunkly video tape of the film, I don't know if you can get it on DVD, it'd be good if you could! Might not be for everyone the film, but because it's scottish and I recognise bits of where it was film, heck I lived very near where they filmed part of this film, makes it that wee bit more special to me!

  • 10 seconds in I knew I was gonna like this one. Thanks for the post.

  • This is the first time I've heard Soft Top, Hard Shoulder, and I love it. Is it just me who thinks this is not just about a car, but also possibly about a woman he loved unrequited?

  • woohoo :)

  • Outstanding,but that's what Chris is,eh?

thanks to santamara for sharing this.

  • Beautiful!

  • Chris is very popular in the plains of the US. We like country-western but mostly we appreciate good writers and live performers. Chris Rea and Porcupine Tree play on a lot CDs and pods across the midlands.

  • 87 shirls you are very funny guy :)

  • Would have to agree, Chris is the best, how does he continue, with such fantastic music time after time, and with different styles

  • goose bumps

  • I'm only 23 and goin to see chris with ma dad at glasgow clyde auditorium nxt fri, 2nd april. Can't wait, growing up listening to him. have to say big thanks to ma dad for introducing me to such quality music. bril song!

  • Amazing song, brilliant artist. There's nobody quite like Chris Rea, what a master! That guitar is stunning, I love those powerful drums!

  • chris is the N1 of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i totally agree with you

  • Amazing. I love his songs, but this one hear for the first time. I am enjoying his music since i've been 12 years old and drove a bycicle with a walkman in my years. Now I am 26, driving my convertible with soft blue top and I can't imagine a world without his music :).

  • if you listen to chris rea it means you still alive and got soul. music for all

  • Love this song, great lyric (mentioned below), a favorite of mine, love the guitar play at the end, so much emotion, Chris is my favorite artist, he has sold many albums but still underrated. Great singer/songwriter!

  • I can't stop to much older now..pick up what is left of me..leave the rest of it down that road...is my feeling now.......

    I love Chris Rea

    Love from Rome

  • Ok so I've only got a sunroof.......

But is this the best driving song ever or what!

  • This will be my soundtrack when got Diamond....

  • definetly underated.

God's great banana skin got me started ages ages ago.

Although this song seems less emotional to me now as i eat my branflakes, I can imagine driving a long empty road with this playing, knowing that i am free.

  • I think you need to bear in mind this pice of music was written for a film , hence the reason that it seems less 'emotional' than most of Rea's songs.

  • Greatest singer/songwriter and slide guitar player of all time anyone agree?

    Underated performer

  • i totally agree with you! This man is just amazing all the way around...AND he survived serious pancreatic illness in 2001. ;-)

  • @87shirls Yes Chris Rea is fantastic! It's an outrage that he doesn't get US exposure

  • @87shirls 150% agree. big bob.

  • @87shirls - agree

  • @87shirls

i have to agree with so Under rated, its amazing he isnt more widely known, true legend amazing song writer and producer but personaly i think theres one man probably to beat him on the guitar for me, Eric Clapton.. but other than that, Chris Rea is a living legend and deserves to be Knighted.

  • @RyanForYou "amazing he isnt more widely known"

    ???

    The chap's world famous!!

    :o)

  • @boo66 pmsl !! 'more widely known' thats made me laugh

  • @RyanForYou Unfortunately the key seems to be living in the US. Same applies for Lara Fabian. Same would have happened to Celion Dion if she has not move to the US. It's unfortunate that that is the way it is -- at least up until now. I think YouTube has started the change that will make all musicians worldwide known. Not necessarily famous, but at least worldwide known. If YouTube had been around 10/15/20 years ago they would be worldwide famous like Clapton, Dire Straits, Bryan Adams, etc.

  • @87shirls I agree

  • Trimph dedicated with Chris Rea, oh yes*****very beautiful song and it will be lasten long ....Thank you for sharing

  • Brilliant music..... on eof th first english songs I remember listening to as a child and absolutely falling in love with it..... Great great great music!!!!

  • MG TF on Yorkshire moors coast road -and this on the CD -AWESOME

  • Great song!!! I love to listen to it when I drive my '93 mx5 in the Greek countryside... Thank you Chris Rea for giving us such songs!

  • fantastic, marvellous !

    what a awersome music!

  • he loves cars, and we love his songs. good deal.

  • Cool tune chris!!! triumph vitesse was it?? and a reliant regal.too.

    Lovely

  • What a man, what a STAR..What a GOD (in my eyes, anyway).

Chris, I've been with you all the way, since I saw you at Loch Lomond, wayyyyy back in 1979.. then told your Dad all about it, back in the Boro, the very next day.

  • Hi, Really interesting comment. I first met Chris/watched a gig in Aberdeen in 1983 ( he was promoting Water Sign). Brilliant guy - met a few times after that, including Manchester Apollo. Got some great pics with him and my brother and our best mate from Coatham Bowl in Redcar not long after Aberdeen. A true star. Be interested in any more info/stories you may have..? '79- jeez that was early. Only a year after Benny Santini. What was the deal at Loch Lomond...?

    Regards Ian

  • Chris Rea - Soft Top, Hard Shoulder

    Soft top, hard shoulder

See me running down that line

I can't stop too much older now

    Let it run in overtime

    Run till it breaks up

    Overheats and explodes

Pick up what's left of me

Leave the rest of it way down that road

    Soft top, hard shoulder

  • Soft top, hard shoulder

    Step in to the flame

    Blue centre, so much colder

    Won't be the same again

I'm gonna run till it breaks up

    Overheats and explodes

Pick up what's left of me

Leave the rest of it way down that road

    Soft top, hard shoulder
