If you don't have allot of space, you can also try growing your melons vertically

by letting them grow for a couple of weeks, them propping the vines up on a "mesh" fence that has 2" sq. gaps in the fencing, "training" the plant to grow up the fencing instead of growing along the ground!!!

@Cknechel1 The melons take up a lot of energy from the plant and because the plant devides that energy over seven or eight fruits, the fruits itself won't get enough. If you cut the amount of melons per plant back to 1 - 3 they should be able to grow bigger.

They are an excellent source of vitamin C, beta carotene (vitamin A), vitamin B, especially B1 (thiamine) & B6 (pyridoxine) and lycopene (if the meat or pulp of watermelons is usually pink or red). They also contain in abundance both potassium and magnesium. Also watermelons don't lose as much nutritional value when cut and stored in the fridge as most other produce.

@mammal46 Just sharing ideas about alternative methods, relax. I'm not a hippie but I do garden organically, and I do grow watermelons. There are not many pests that go after our watermelons, so I don't think pesticide is necessary anyway. For every pest in your garden, there's a beneficial insect that wants to consume that pest. Pesticides kill too many of those beneficial and/or pollinating insects. You can destroy your ecosystem if you want... to me, it sounds like you just like to kill.
