Now we understand why Mathis is a Karajan’s singer: extremely flexible use of air and good diction. A perfect legato, voice round and true. Not too emotional, but not cold. For me, definitely the best version in the Youtube’s Collection.
Esta versión es la que más me gusta. Su voz es muy dulce y preciosa, su dicción perfecta y la cuadratura de su voz es estupenda.Además, el conjunto musical y la cantante van al unísono, cosa que no he visto en otras versiones.
From all versions I heard so far Edith Mathis is one of the best. Irmgard Seefried is oustanding as well and Lucia Popp is excellent. I prefer the "older" generation, that's clear.
I like her but we need to be a bit objective. Some of the high notes are just flat and there is no excuse for this at this level. With regards to best versions for this aria, I prefer Miah Pearson's singing; her voice is much more adequate for it.
there is no reason not to enjoy this recording - i (always!) love Mathis' clear delivery and musicality - that said - she is a great teacher too ('it is not a good teacher whose pupils ...') her pupil surpasses her in this aria
If "unsurpassed" could be used , it would be IMO Karita Mattila "Ruhe sanft", "Soave sia il vento", "Di scrivermi"; Barbara Hendricks "Zeffiretti lusinghieri", "Se il padre perdei"; Sylvia McNair "Et incarnatus est", "Exsultate" & "Tu virginum corona"; Arleen Auger "Martern aller Arten". Most other top arias were sung too heavenly by too many top world-class to choose one IMO.
Now I *love* Edith Mathis who deserves her high place in this heaven.
Version sérieuse:Aigus un peu trop appuyés,néanmoins de bonnes choses.

Bit stiff and severe, like von Karajan.

Zing? Maybe she wasn't in her prime anymore when making this recording.

@PlatoJaspers No... I meant, like, Zing, calling Von Karajan severe... I meant no disrespect to her!

Edith Mathis sang Mozart in perfection! She was leading in that case. She's also the teacher of Diana Damrau.
