That would be good. Checked baggage returned to Indianapolis a week ago on the Cardinal (finally). There is still no food car on the Hoosier. They did try it for a few days while the Cardinal was unable to go past Cincinnati, but then discontinued it again. The Hoosier is usually sold out, so they could sure use an extra coach or two and at least a coffee pot in the morning.
Well Amtrak is supposed to get 25 new viewliner sleepers starting in 2012, and on to of that 25 viewliner dinners, 25 Viewliner dorm cars and 55 Viewliner baggage cars to replace older diners and baggage cars. So I think there's hope for the Cardinal becoming daily.
Nice video! Cool that 201 is one of two P42DCs that has an EMD cast mechanical bell, (the other being P42 #50). From what I know, 200 looks in way better condition damage wise compared to 7. Also, 112 was another recent victim of fire damage with the conductors side completely charred.
200 and 7 have been at Albion, Iowa for about 8 months getting fixed. There is one, #8 that is questionable as to whether it can be repaired. Now 4 more have burned up indifferent incidents, so there are 5 sitting out with burned up innards.
P-42 200 isn't down at the Grove being repaired, its in the graveyard. 200 was scrapped a while back along with 7 both with heavy fire damage. They were sent up on Q642 to visit the bone yard in Harvey IL.
Wow, what a thorough report - coincidentally I saw AMTK 139 making a light move at the downtown Chicago yard on the 3rd, funny thing it was pulling the Hoosier that night. here's the proof:
Good to know, and I am glad I got the shots of the "Hooper" on such a nice day, unusually bright day here for this time of the year in northern Indiana.
@BosworthJ Theres only a few units named after poeple and another handful named for cities or states. Hooper was the president of L&N up until its merger with seaboard and later became the first VP for CSX.
AW man didnt know you were down there. i was probobly filming you standing and waiting :p I set up further down because the colonel hooper memorial diesel was out switching down the tracks.
The future of this train is actually looking quite bright. It can be made a daily train when the new order of Viewliner's come in. That will replace the heritage baggage, add an actual full service dining car, and add one to two more sleepers. Making it a full time long distance train.
@CSXKid5016 There's also the possibility of Amtrak purchasing the former GrandLuxe Express Domeliners form regular use between D.C.-Chicago on the Cardinal.
@CSXKid5016 I know. But the Domeliners can't fit underneatht the catenary on the D.C.-NYC segment of the route. So the cars would be added upon departure of Washington, D.C. Union Station.

That's interesting about the bells. I am not sure if I could tell the difference. Maybe if they were sitting side by side taking turns.

I got some still shots of the Hooper earlier down at Pee Ridge. What is the deal with that, I didn't know they named locomotives after people?
