  • Now We are slaves of the EU.

  • And, ignoring part 2 which did not have any parts of the Fantasia at all, but SHOULD have contained Farewell and Adieu, Ye Ladies, this continues with,

    Home Sweet Home

See the Conquering Hero Comes (with whistling audience, and which then segues into)

    Rule Britannia (with repeat)

  • How on earth can somebody dislike a performance like that! That's rubbish!

  • Maybe I missed seeing Fantasia on British Sea Songs on the Proms tonight but I really wish the organisers would bring back Fantasia and the hornpipe I love the audience participation

  • Oh, I think they "Handel-ed" the whistling quite well.

  • @BenAliGtor That actually made me burst out with laughter!! He's a great de-composer!

  • I think it is "Hail the Conquering Hero"; remember it's British sea songs.

  • @chrisbenger It's "See, the Conquering Hero Comes' by Handel. It was originally part of the score to an oratorio and was then used as a hymn tune for 'Thine Be The Glory' so both are right in a way.

  • multicultarism sucks

  • The oboe is playing "No Place Like Home" and they are whistling "Hail, the Conquering Hero Comes"

  • @chrisbenger I thought it was 'Thine be the glory' that they're whistling... ?

  • Britain never, ever, ever will be slaves.

  • What is the song everyone is whistling?

  • Hi there. What song is the oboe playing at the start?

  • To all Britains who have problems with multiculturism: don't forget the British Empire, where you imposed your culture, language and religion on other countries and peoples. It's ok to be patriotically, but it's not fine to be nationalistically. And as a German, I really know what I am talking about! ;-)

Anyway: thanks for this video. It's really impressive! I wish we Germans could admit a little more patriotism..like the english men do!

  • @spoonetti I forget nothing . German Kings and German troops; the Hanoverians(the Red Germans), the Brunswickers, The KGL (King's German legion)(Cavalry)

  • @VerbalBlitzkrieg You spelt it wrong. It's impoRtant* ;-)

  • @VerbalBlitzkrieg - an interesting beginning to a conversation.

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

  • @billse10 Pathetic...borrowed from Churchill

  • My England......

  • What is the name of the movement/piece with the oboe solo?

  • brings a tear to the eye

  • Can you play a wind instrument when wearing a Burkha ? lol. So, we should'nt fight in Afghanistan ....no lets sit back and watch more panes fall from the sky instead. OR clear up the tube stations after we leave them free to more carnage ?

Get a grip please. Excellent music by the way :-)

  • hehe i played the oboe solo today in orchestra as the oboist wasn't there! :) i love this solo :) sounds just as good on clarinet :P

    xx

  • I didn't see a single burkha in there . . . weren't they allowed in among those chinless twits?!

  • Didn't you get an invitation :o( ?

  • AAAA. 131955Z FEB 2010 Thank you for posting....If it had been the Royal Navy and The Command of The Lord Jesus `Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel`...The world owes it thanks to The UK.....So let us just enjoy the music from a small little country surrounded by the sea, that built the largest empire the world has ever known. And we all benefit from it...Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people...O/T PROVERBS 14:34.......AR.

  • @fourwayscottage

I enjoy how you made an intelligent comment laced with religiousness, It pieced together rather nicely [:

And that's saying something, considering I'm not a fan of religion haha.

  • Very well put

As a person with a keen and passionate interest in the British Empire, however, I must stress and admit that we have done SO much wrong in this world as well. Afghanistan, Palestine/Israel, several African countries, countless other countries...all bear the scars and modern-day troubles caused by our actions.

Still a wonderful, interesting period in history, though. The Empire is not appreciated enough, nor is it taught in our schools. People should know, regardless of shame

  • can't you guys just leave all the talk of who's who and just enjoy the damn music? it'sdamn good and they've droppe dit from the programme. enjoy it as music, not as an excuse to have an argument. i;m british too and i really don't give a shit ^_^

  • It puts pride in my step and fills my heart and soul with pride too

  • Rule Britannia - dissolve the EU

  • @suspect1985 - dont't dissolve it, just kick out the UK. It would be better for both sides. You would't so much about the EU and the rest would't have to listen to all the moaning.

  • Comment removed

  • GoFeri - in a sense that would be just as good. However I feel the EU is just as bad for our European neighbours as it is for us.

  • Fair enough - I guess we agree to disagree on that point. But the advantages and disadvantages of EU membership may differ from nation to nation. I personally believe my country benefited from membership during the past five years.

  • @suspect1985 halleluja, someone agrees with me!!!!!

  • @gaiaceacilia, there's actually a lot of us that think the same - lookup UKIP

  • This man is a great conductor - I've no doubt about that. And his approach is both very thorough and very British (it strikes me). But I also think that the "bridge" he constructed between the "Fantasia" and "Rule Britannia" was a mistake. In that moment, the whole thing descended to the level of cabaret. Although I have to say that the choral arrangement of "Rule Britannia" was brilliantly executed.

What a fascinating conductor. And how like a Bond villain he dresses (!)

  • @MarineBoy..What kind of pillock are you? What bridge? The Fantasia arranged by Wood INCLUDES Rule Brittania...or at least the first verse...although the full thing hasn't been done for some years, I believe it comprises:- 1. Bugle Calls 2. The Anchor's Weighed 3. Saucy Arethusa 4. Tom Bowling 5. Jack's The Lad (Hornpipe) 6. Farewell and Adieu, Spanish Ladies 7. Home, Sweet Home 8. See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes 9. Rule, Britannia!

#6 has lately been replaced by regional efforts...Tch!

  • It is so nice to read a comment by someone with some intelligance. Thank you

  • Singleton Park tonight boy! can't wait! :D

  • Multiculturalism is very important to our history. Keeping to culture rather than genetics.. Celtic kingdoms displaced by Roman civilisation, then by Angles/Jutes/Saxons, then Normans. Let's not forget the Catholic church's influence on the culture either, nor that of the colonies. Our language is a Western Germanic language brought by the aforementioned tribes enriched by French/Latin vocab among the thousands of other loan words.

  • Just to add, the United Kingdom was the (perhaps dysfunctional) welding together of constituent countries with differing cultures (and languages), and together it ruled the world for a time. For hundreds of years, the British had more freedoms and more tolerance than many other nations in Europe (perceived of course). I think this is key to a nation that uses tropes such as 'Mother of the Free'. Perhaps our culture is about aspiring to provide freedom and tolerance among its subjects/allies?

  • Much of what you say is somewhat correct, but Britain now has a culture of its own, it has 7 different nations in it, is that not multicultural enough? how many other countries can say they are made of 7 countries each with a differen't language and identity? (Cornwall, England, Ireland, Ulster, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man). We should protect the culture we have now and not replace it just for multiculturalisms sake. And yes i know not all of those countries are in the UK or even exist anymore.

  • cornwall is an indipendant nation? NO CORNISH SEPRATISITS HERE MATE!

  • @a3mette Multiculturalism by it's very existence leads to the denigration and dissolving of the indigenous culture.

We have never had such levels of mass immigration before (a few thousands Vikings and Hugenots or Jews fleeing pogroms ) ie 400000 per annum) and those that came before were of a shared European culture unlike Muslim immigrants who refuse to assimilate unlike for instance the Indian community.

  • @a3mette But none of that matters, because a single culture has been born of it and all others must be assimilated or rejected! We are not a nation of many cultures, we are many nations of one huge and encompassing culture!

  • @a3mette yea but i don't think, muslims who want to bring sharia law in is going to do us much bloody good.

  • @a3mette It is the blending of the elements you mention (and more) into a homogeneous single culture that made the best of Britain. Multiculturalism leads to sub-division into more and more diverse elements and ultimately no clearly identifiable culture at all, and probably to a nation very poorly placed to deal with outside pressures.

  • Why do we need to hear or see those 3 letters b n p ? Are we that non British and UNITED to have to follow those fascists.

I am BRITISH and proud to be that and also I am proud to have many other cultures in our great country that is what makes GREAT BRITIAN GREAT!

  • what a disgusting comment

  • You vile person. The very esscense of this country is multiculturalism.

  • I think its disgusting that you said (The veryessence of this country is multiculturalism) bullshit, its loyalty, Christianity, it is the British people that make our culture not the culture making the people. You are retarded if you think that Islam and multiculturalism had anything to do with our history. It completely clashes with our freedoms and liberties which our people fought hard and long for.

  • And by the many black and Muslim faces in the audience, you can see how grateful they are to be part of British culture (the essence of which, according to you, is multiculturalism)...

  • You idiot. That's the most unBritish thing anybody could possibly say.

  • Britishness is about fair play and decency and you don't hold either of those values.

Anyone who supports the BNP fascists are sticking 2 fingers up to our brave men who fought against the fascists 65 years ago. They are traitors through and through.

Britishness isn't about skin colour you moron. If you think it is then I'd suggest you're not remotely British at all.

  • You really are a nasty ignorant bigotted little shitbag aren't you? The Royal Navy of the 18th and 19th centuries (whose values you apparently espouse) were multiculturally crewed - that's right...loads of lascars, boatloads of black people...even Americans were occasionally pressed...or shock of all horrors, Irish people...

Jackie Fisher, admiral and first sea lord was apparently blessed with a touch of the tarbrush...even Churchill was half american you fucking clown

    You really are a twat...

  • What's British about St. George, you fool?

  • what about st andrew, st david and st patrick (yup, there is a harp on the arms of the UK too). i think you're a tad too selective in your idea of britishness.

for britishness relaive to the 21st century, i would start by looking up the battle of cable street.

  • I agree with britainnotasia I live in Oldham (large muslim area) and its a shit hole because of them. The Oldham market is like been in Pakistan, our culture is been wiped out by an alien one. Most parts of town are unrecognisable with its history.

  • every major city, you can tell the areas the Muslims live because they look like an absolute shithole.

  • When America is sunk in the abyss, there will still be an England !

  • Love it!

    Thankyou.

  • Comment removed

  • lol, love it how the welsh like being Brits, waving the jack. Yet not one Union Flag in Glasgow! They reaaaaallllyy want independence dont they....

  • The Welsh are just as bad as the Scottish to be honest mate.

and I my family come from Wales and Scotland I'm more proud of being English born and bred!

  • Sorry if I am ignorant but what is tune that is played immediately before "Rule, Britannia!"?

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you.

  • The piece is really called "Home Sweet Home" but is better known as "There's no place like home" and was composed by Henry Bishop in 1821.

  • Megabrits is right that the first tune is "Home Sweet Home", but after that and before "Rule, Britannia!" is "See the Conq'ring Hero Comes" by Handel.

  • Sorry if this is ignorant - I've been living abroad for too long, but the Union flag with pink instead of blue, what's that all about? Is it some kind of diss towards Scotland or are they Scots trying to declare independance from the UK? Or have they just washed the flags a bit too well... Legendary by the way...

  • That's the old St. George's Cross flag of England pre-Union- I know it looks pink, but the cross is actually red - I own one.

  • A search on google seems to show that a Union flag with a pink backing is used for showing gay pride. I don't know if that's the sole use for it, but that's what the big google hits were about.

  • There is another meaning for it, but I can't remember it. The gay community appropriated it though.

  • There are three things in my life I want to attend before I die: all three are in London: (in random order) The Wimbledon mens tennis final; the FA Cup Final in Wembley, hopefully with ManUtd participating, and the Last Night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall.

  • Such fun!

  • Forget the nationalistic crap and enjoy the music! Music hasn't lead us into nonsence wars, but nationalism has!

  • Hear him! The last night of the proms isn't about jingoism, it's realy a sort of national party. An annnual event. Unlike real concerts you will not be taken outside and shot!Audience participation is practically compulsory.

  • I agree. The majority that go there and enjoy the music are not jingoistic. My point was regarding the people that comment here on this website and use the music/words for their own jingoistic nationalism.

The conductor here by the way, Mark Elder, was sacked from conducting the Last Night in 1990 because of his comments regarding the "British content" (jingoism?) in the light of the impending Iraq invasion.

  • Ich bin anonsten was klassische Musik betrifft eher zurückhaltend, aber THE LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS ist und bleibt fester Bestandteil mener Jahresplanung. Mit voller Brust singe auch dann : GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!

  • It is great to see that Britain has not lost its long and glorious traditions and that Britain still is THE country with heart and soul. BE PROUD OF YOUR EMPIRE! BE PROUD OF YOUR UNION! BE PROUD OF YOUR MONARCHY! BE PROUD OF YOUR QUEEN!

Salutes from Germany! Long live the Union Jack!

  • cheers my friend.

  • well, have you ever heard of "leviatan" and thomas hobbes? I don't think so, because if you had you would know that mankind is unable to live without government. Your opinion would result in anarchy and I do not think that this is a worthwhile goal.

  • @Nathanderweise8 I like these words of yours ;)

  • Why is the conductor dressed like a restaurant chef??

  • Which part features "Jack's the Lad"???

  • Part 1 I think.

  • From reading the comments, it looks like Nationalism is starting to become a thing of the past

  • I was thinking a couple of years ago that Nationalism was starting to become a thing of the past ... then came YouTube.

  • The Nationalism bit came from something I learned from my music history class on Wednesday. The class was listening to the second movement (Vltava) of Smetana's "Má vlast", and the teacher was saying how an except of Sibelius' Finlandia became the Finnish National Anthem.

As for Fantasia of British Sea Songs, if you're a Brit listening to this, you'd stand up where you are tall and proud.

  • GoFeri - what exactly is wrong with nationalism? can we assume you believe in the dissolution of nations?

  • I quite agree, it has gone and now we are being invaded by the huns and the frogs without a shot being fired! first the lisbon treaty, next our freedoms! along with nationalism, DEMOCRACY IS NOW DEAD WORLDWIDE!!!!

  • If the event dosnt celebrate Britishness then why is that the culture minister tried to suggest that they should be stopped onthe grounds that they were overlly patriotic leading to division within the country???

  • Because your culture minister is stupid.

  • I love the last night of the proms it fills me with a nice warm feeling inside. Like having a lovely cup of tea....

I'm so happy to be British!

  • Please explain why there are a few German flags being waved about... and Norway... and Papal... they were never part of the Commonweath... I just dont get it esp since it seems every year there is someone right up front with a big friggen Vatican flag...? I get the Welsh flags... and Ausi... and Cornwall etc. but isint the Proms supposed to be all about being British?

  • The current Royal Blood line can be traced back to a German family. The Queen is 'the defender of the faith' with the blessing of the pope (ie. the hat form the parliament)

  • Hehehe, that is not why they are waving German flags.. and the Queen isint even Catholic... and that doesent explain all the flags from Norway mixed in there... anyone else want to give it a try....

  • The proms or rather, The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, consists of daily orchestral classical music concerts held during eight weeks each summer, mainly in RAH. The Proms are about celebrating and promoting classical music and their composers, of which notably a majority are not British (Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, etc). The last night is more of a winding down concert and is preformed in a much lighter, whimsical mood.

  • The proms are not at all about "being British" and the patriotic songs at the end of Last Night are performed as to give the audience a chance to participate. The proms are about celebrating great classical music, different composers from around the world. Last Night is the culmination of all this and as such, I see no reason as to why many different flags can't be waved. This is an event celebrated and watched by millions. We are a global community and I suggest you get used to it.

  • so i guess you havent taken into account the words of the song in this clip "rule britannia". "when Britain at Heavens command".

If it's not celebrating being British I don't know what is. also this is called the fantasia of BRITISH sea songs and was written in comemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar.

  • I have taken those words into account. In fact, I KNOW those words by heart and proudly sing them every year at Last Night, along with EVERY single song that is preformed on Last Night. The songs are british and very patriotic, they and the good old islands that they represent are the reason why I'm going to become a british citizen. However, the point of them being performed is not because Last Night is about celebrating being british. Last Night is about celebrating classical music.

  • Yeah mainly British stuff

  • Uh no. All the first hour or so of the program reflects the theme of the Proms of that year. Which this year included Dvorák and Rakhmaninov. Last night is the culmination of the Proms, which are about celebrating classical music. Last Night is also about classical music. Classical music is global. The British patriotic songs are there because it's such good fun to sing them, in other words, they are there for the sake of the audience. Read up on the Proms before going into this debate.

  • but at its climax its british stuff which is all about celebrating britain. Unlike you im British i know wot these things are about.

also do not insult me like again i kno about this stuff ive bin brought up with it.

  • Why don't you actually read the wikipedia article about the Proms? Read anything, something. Just because you've "been brought up with it" doesn't automatically mean you understand the first thing about it, as evident by your stubborn ignorance. The British songs are patriotic but they are NOT preformed because the Proms are the "Celebrate Britain's Awesomeness Promenade Concerts". They aren't. The songs are about British awesomeness. The Proms, Last Night and everything around it all aren't.

  • Look at it this way: "Hi, I'm from Spain. I love classical music, I think the BBC orchestra is one of the best in the world, I've travelled here from my home in southern Spain and I've paid to go to six concerts to have a chance to maybe also attend the Last Night and experience one of the most spectacular evenings on the musical calendar of the year. When here, I'm going to wave my flag to signify, "Hi, I'm from Spain. I love this and am proud and happy to be here."

  • the pope still does not recognise the church of england so what has the pope got to do with things

  • Hehe... there is nothing wrong with being proud of your nation or celebrating that pride evidux... as for the rest.. on the last night there is a LOT of British songs, usually ending with Rule Britiana or Land of Hope and Glory or such... never mind that the Proms is a British tradition so just back off pal... one can see why it was odd seing all the flags (Norway, Denmark, etc) but thanks to all those who provided me with info :)

  • Not once did I say that it's wrong to be proud of one's nation. What I did say was that the Proms are about celebrating classical music. I also said that Last Night is about winding down and letting the audience participate. This is best accomplished by performing songs everybody knows how to sing. Actually, Last Night ALWAYS ends with "Jerusalem" followed by "God save the Queen". The Proms are British but the point of them is to celebrating classical music, which is global in origin and nature.

  • No - it's about the rest of the world knowing what Britian is.

    There was a famous headline many years ago on the front page of a British newspaper and it said;

FOG IN THE CHANNEL - EUROPE CUT OFF.

Understand that my friend and you will understand what's makes me British and why we dragged Europe into the modern world AND saved it from itself.

  • well said

  • Forget who's trustworthy or not, all that matters is Chimesy's pedalling on the timps from 2:30 onwards. I tried that once. Laughing stock, its incredibly hard!

  • Yes you're right, that looks like one minute of timpanist scarey moments!! One that every British timpanist will know and no one else will!!!

  • RULE BRITANNIA

  • The announcer sounds like John Cleese

  • Not realy British soldiers fault, politicians were responsible for that.

  • They are the most trustworthy people in the world. If you ask a british soldier for help he will give it to the British People with his life

  • excellent makes you proud to be British

  • GREAT BRITAIN:

The Land of Hope And Glory...The Mother Of The Free.

    The Empire is dead!

    Long Live The Empire!

  • Shouldn't you be pleasuring yourself to an Ann Coulter video?

  • grande musica per un grande concerto.........

  • I'm in shock! Where's the fat lady gone!!!???? My god they've bloody ruined it.

  • Rule Britannia! Britannia rule the waves!

Britons never! never! never shall be slaves! \(^o^)/

    Feeling languid and drowsiness.

are blown away by the sound which is brimful of the feeling of energy of "Rule Britannia"

  • RobMason is absolutely right. Slatkin is just another PC clone who has chipped away at an old tradition in order not to 'offend' anyone who might be so precious to be offended. Blair & his cohorts on the rabid left are traitors by constantly trying to denigrate the nations history culture ,heritage ,institutions & traditions.

  • I will always be proud to be a son of the Empire. God Save The Queen!! and God Bless Australia.

  • nicely put digger

  • Great... I love Britain.... Long live Britain...

  • Get the Message? Blair

  • what does this have to do with blair?

  • Basically, to give the message that we will not be slaves to Blairs crap ideals of HIS vision of Britishness is. Blair & his Fabian buddies want to rid britain of the proud & dignified British, just to fill it up with Labour voters drafted in from the 3rd world.

  • Oh! i see what you mean even though i'm a yank.

  • spot on rob, its not pc but im proud to be ENGLISH!

  • Excellent

  • great

    Long live Britain!

  • I think patriotism is a great thing, and as I can see it is still very present in Britain. It's a pity for Belgium that hardly anyone can still sing the national anthem, unlike the British, who don't have one but several anthems among which Rule Britannia!, God save The Queen, Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem,...

    Long live Britain and Belgium!

  • Many thanks for these clips; I'm British but I've never been to one of these evenings.

    Long live Britain!

  • I used to tape every last night of the proms when I lived in England. Needless to say that I still get them shipped out to me here in New Zealand. I miss my home country immesurably, New Zealand isn't a patch on it.

  • i watched this on BBC1 TV when it went out live on September 9!!

    Man, it was special!!

  • Rule Britannia, We British rule the waves!!

  • Superb!

  • Rule Britannia!

  • Britains never will be slaves.
