  • Bebop was invented in the 40's by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. The singers who invented the vocal art were King Pleasure, Joe Carroll, Jon Hendricks, Ella and Sarah. You can like Miss oday if you choose. To try and place her in the same catagory as Sarah and Ella, and credit her with inventing an African-American Artform is naive and uninformed at best. She like most other white singers emulated Billie until she matured to find her own way. This is history.

  • I love her dress here, in the first part. There's another video of her around then, singing with Louis Armstrong, where she's wearing a similar dress, even cuter than this one though. She's the hippest.

  • Anita was a godess. Besides her incredable technique, she had an amazing tone and swung her ass off like nobody else.

  • It was, also, in 1958, that Gerry Mulligan used the voice of Annie Ross as the second "horn" in one of his piano-less quartets.

  • Anita's the best.

  • My inspiration

  • Short but great !!

  • She was good

  • i always thought carmen modeled her singing after anita's style

  • @julieyard1 Jazz is an African-American artform. Anita O'day like all white so-called jazz singers of the 40's and 50's tried to emulate the Black singers of the day. Carmen modeled her style after Anita? You are unfortunately not very well versed about this artform or it's history. Anita Oday could not carry Carmen's shoes.

  • @EXQUISITESOUNDS Anita invented/defined the role of the BeBop singer in the 50's and 60's -- you bet your ass Carmen was influenced by Anita, EVERY singer of the time, and moving forward was influenced by her scatting and when it came to rhythm and improvising on the fours, O'Day was unmatched, even by Ella or Sarah, not even Carmen -- they would all readily admit this. Furthermore, Billie Holiday was a great admirer, Anita is one of the greatest ever.

  • Awesome two of the finest women whose voices ever graced jazz. Just hear Anita sing her ass off.
