baroque music is always sung and played a half tone lower. It's because real baroque instruments are tuned that way, thus is it correct to play and sing it like that.
This is fabulous singing, that takes your breath away! Not intended to be sung 'beltissimo'. And what stunning contrasts, between beginning and end. You've missed the point, I fear– so I could not disagree with you more.
"Für Elise", no doubt? Please, where can we compare your recording?
Half the aria with no resonance or color to the voice, even for a tiny, white voice like this one. Those attempts at soft singing in the adagio section are just painful; is it supposed to sound baroque or something, vibratoless?
@primohomme really? I thought the original score had the high E? Wouldn't it make sense that most sopranos transpose it down since they don't have the high E? haha
@primohomme Yeah, she definitely does. She's one of my fave! I also thought about the period instruments as well, perhaps that's the reason! :) I was only startled, because I'm singing this at my recital at IU in a little over a month, and realized it was a half step lower!
I just feel like she has no respect for the music she is singing. She's a great actress and she has a great voice, and I really want to like her, but every time I listen to her I am so disappointed. She feels she can do anything she wants with the music, and she totally disregards how the composer intended the piece to be sung. It's a shame, really.

Dessay is a very light soprano with a very good projection, Petibon 's voice isvery different, not the same projection, but more lyric qualities.
I love Dessay rendition of this aria, angelic phrasing, reallly divine, but I aslo love this rendition too. Petiton is very intense, it's more dramatic (also because of the colour of the voice, and the chest or mixed voice). the jump between the low B and high D is tremendous.
I like the tempo! It's a little faster than usual, the first part. Petibon sounds better in the slow. Her sound is not focused in the final. But great anyways.
First... OMG, get over it. LOL! Not only am I the most supreme Natalie Dessay fan, but I've still managed to fall head over heels in love with Petibon. If you can't manage to like more than one soprano at a time, then YOU'VE got trouble. The soprano doesn't.
@PianoMusic37 Allez donc écouter ce Vorrei Spiegarvi chanté par Mlle Bernadette Mercier (ci-dessous) chanteuse française aussi !!!! vous m'en direz des nouvelles
i think they have quite different instruments...but talking about prefrences...for me in this kind of arias there is nobody better than the glorious Edita Gruberova. In any case, i have liked a lot la Petibon singing this. Brava!!!
Good, but Dessay in this concerto aria is simply divine, both in the recording version as in the video. She simply belongs to another league, and her Mozart Concert arias are with great probability the best ever recorded, despite being Petibon pretty good too.
As for me I prefer Petibon's rendition. All tastes are in nature, all right ? I must recognize they're both immensly gifted, but as it's been truthfully said, Petibon's got chest note that Dessay can't even dream of.
I can't be sure about their chest voice because they both don't use it so much in their coloratura repertoire... but I played with both singers, and believe me, Dessay's voice is generally two or three times more powerful than Petibon's, and her style much more intense! ;-)
Well, yes, I do think so. Notably from hearing both singers live in the same aria. I find Petibon's singing more dramatic than Dessay's, but as I said all tastes are in nature. Now from hearing them both live, I must say that it's rather the other way around : Petibon's voice being way more powerful than Dessay's, but we agree on what really counts, namely that they both are exceptional singers.
Correction, Dessay had a high G up till 2000, she never had a chest voice like Petibon has. Dessay's low Bb is merely an asthmatic whisper in her recording of this aria, while Petibon's is strong and supported. Also Petibon has a high F, she has nothing to envy Dessay.
i saw Dessay and Petibon twice in conert this year. And they both amazed me. Even though i find dessay has a sublter and sweeter tone, petibon's voice sometimes sounding a bit streched and forced in the high and forte notes. Particularly in an aria like "der Hölle Rache" the famous queen of the night's aria. That was a huge mistake on her last album. Anyway I do enjoy immensly her singing.
@primohomme Dessay's lows in this aria are 1000 times better than petitbon, which produces them with the larynx, and dessay with the chest and the mask.
Dessay has a chest voice? All I hear from her is weak suffocated whispers. She was great in the 90's, now her highest without strain is G5, and her lowest well supported is F5. LOL.

@coloraturaElise
Her voice doesn't lack resonance, it is the typical french soprano voice
Which is often thin in color but with a silvery edge that helps it project without too much volume
primohomme 5 months ago
This is at low pitch, with 'authentic' instruments! Not transposed therefore.
But what gorgeous singing, and oboe playing to match. Wow!
bearsdenoboe 5 months ago
Is this recording a half step lower than the score? I didn't realize this aria can be sung a half step lower!
JKim1013 7 months ago
@JKim1013
I think perhaps most sopranos actually transpose it UPWARDS because they don't have the low B-flat ;)
primohomme 7 months ago

@JKim1013
You are right, I just checked the score, it goes up to E
Patricia does have and E though, she has a high F actually
So perhaps if this is lower, it's because they were using period instruments
or perhaps she had it transposed, I don't know, with concert arias sometimes it is acceptable to transpose.
