I first heard this on a Reader's Digest Big Band boxed set. Timeless and haunting, it's a great play. One thing is certain: Good music never goes out of style, Beatles to Beachboys, it's all good.
I am glad you posted the music.. i have the 45 rpm a remake I don't remeber the label but i learned of the music as an 8 or 9 year old in the mid 50's my aunt had the record and i replayed it many times!!!! thanks
This cut showed up on the sound track of HBO's MILDRED PIERCE. That's how I tracked it down; this music is supernatural or something. It transcends genre and age. Magnificent
Coming to these videos makes me feel really young compared to everyone else that watches these. I'm actually surprised 70 and 80 year olds watch YouTube. :P
Do you have any other Bea Wain/Larry Clinton collaborations that you could post, such as "My Heart At Thy Sweet Voice", "The One Rose That's Left In My Heart", "Our Love Is Here To Stay (the Gershwin song), "True Confession" or "You Go To My Head". She was an absolutely wonderful singer, New York accent despite.
@jbponeshxc No you are not! But it is because your SOUL remembers this type of music from a previous lifetime. You may have died once upon a time during WW2, But God in his infinite mystery has sent you back to do a job here, now in the early part of the 21st century. So enjoy what your soul remembers and learn from the past to make a difference for the future...
I am now 70 years old, but this is one of the first songs I remember when I was just about 11 or 12 and my Mom liked the song, so I liked it. We listened to this song at the Juke Box of the Varadero Beach Bowling Alley, Matanzas, Cuba. There were not home record players or MP3 players at that time..... Memories
So, just what is 'perfection'? Well, I don't really know, but to paraphrase a famous line from a concurring opinion by Mr. Justice Potter Stewart, I know it when I hear it. In her diction, phrasing and delivery, Bea Wain's voice IS perfection (the tremolos are exquisite) - unsurpassed and rarely equaled (a short list). This gorgeous and tasteful arrangement by the great Larry Clinton also touches the Divine.
I remember when Bea Wain and Her husband Andre Baruch, a popular radio announcer on many hit programs. , had a show called Mr. and Mrs. Music. We always had music playing on the radio and I rmemebr this program.
I believe this is the best rendition of My Reverie..dispite the fact that Peggy Mann did also a very sensuos version...with Larry Clinton orchestra thanks for the clip!!!
I agree......gorgeous arrangement of a Debussy classic, wonderfully sung by Bea Wain. I was 6 mos. old when this was recorded, but my parents had the 78 and just about wore it out as I grew up in the War years. What a huge talent was Bea Wain...sort of a "little girl" phrasing combined with a sensuous, wordly voice and delivery. They just don't MAKE 'EM like that anymore, and the World is poorer for it!
If you liked this studio pairing of Clinton and Wain, I recommend you search out the following titles for your listening edification: True Confession, Two Dreams Got Together, The Dipsy Doodle, Saving Myself For You, I Double Dare You,
Our Love Is Here To Stay, Samson and Delilah, and of course, the 1939 studio version of Deep Purple, which was reportedly # 1 for NINE (!) weeks back then.
genia106: Bea Wain was my father's favorite singer, and "My Reverie' was one of his favorite songs. When he listened to this, he would almost faint. Glad you feel the same way! --Bob
This is the definitive big band version of this song, and even the whole Swing Era. Not quite as much an accomplishment as the Clinton/Wain collaboration on "Deep Purple" (the all time definitive version of that song too). Only the R&B vocal ballad version of this by The Larks from 1951 may surpass this.
As for the Bing Crosby version contemporary version to this, he sounds so uninspired, as if Decca were forcing him to record a version for them, when he knew better, and betrayed it.
Bea Wain is such a good vocalist. She really has a way of swinging right in with the Big Band sound which is not easy to do.This is a wonderful version of My Reverie. The best in my opinion! Thanks for posting this!
In music so much depends on the singer and Bea Wain singing "My Reverie" is the Gold Standard. But let's not forget Larry Clinton's unforgettable arrangement to this classic that makes it evergreen. This song will aaaaaaalways be...
WOW! Finally, I have been searching for this forever, Bea Wain and Larry Clinton, how can you get any better than that? Thank you for a great posting made my whole evening.
FINALLY, someone has posted my late father's #1 song !! I have it on disc, and I have seen a B&W video somewhere, but the sound is so clear here. Bea Wain was a marvellous singer, and Larry Clinton was a swing band which still knew how to do the romantic ballads. EXCELLENT! 5 stars!
This is GLORIOUS! Bob, I am TRULY, MADLY and DEEPLY in LOVE with this HYPNOTIC song. This romantic melody and ultra romantic vocal are PERFECT for really close Cheek to Cheek dancing. :-)
Thanks Bob, I remember us talking about this version. This is one of the finest arrangements in the history of music, Kudos to the amazing Larry Clinton.
Hi Bob, We finally managed to have everything ready for Thanksgiving dinner at the same time. No easy feat. I have been doing some posting but not too much lately. I go through these mood swings. I hope to send a few more songs to Patrick to post in the next few days.
I send him a few now and then But most of the stuff he posts is his. Thanks for the concern but I'm fine I never really get too down. Some might consider my down time their up time.
Wow, you must have been only 10 at the time. Glad to share on here with you again. You should subscribe to my channel. I will be posting lots more beautiful music from this time.
This is magic. Bea Wain's vocal is perfect and the band are great. This is an excellent recording from a 78. This is in my favourite videos playlist. Thank you.
if there's a heaven, you'll probably hear this up there. a beautiful melody, it makes you feel like you're floating on a cloud.

This was a big favorite of Jack Kerouac's. It appears in his writings quite often. Beautiful tune and lyric.....

I was a teenager when this song was popular ('30s) and my heart beat when I
heard it and I thought of my loved one (then 14-15). It was shared "puppy love,"
but when 19 we married with vows of being together for life. Alas, then came
the war and I received a "Dear John" letter from her saying that she was in
love with a sailor, a heart breaker for an Infantry soldier in combat. But when
I hear the song today I think of her with fondness and forgiveness and hope
that the sailor could not swim.

Memories at its best.
