  • Make a video on how to hook up a Roland keyboard to rockband!

  • This is awesome... but because the video and sound wasn't sync'd I cant watch the full video!

  • WHAt?

  • Nice one, I've done the same thing!

  • Dear God I wish I could have an acoustic drumset in our downtown apartment.. this sounds sooo shitty, sorry (not you, the drum set). *cry*

    I hate neighbors!

  • same keyboard than me -.-

  • thats well sik

  • electronic drums WILL sound like cardboard unless plugged into an amp lol. chances are he wouldnt plug them in to play rockband...

  • itll be cool if you have drums play their original music through speakers, while it still works on rock band..

  • @natebombdiggitydawg

you can if you have the sound module and a GHWT drumset

  • you cant like have the GH:wt MiDi input and play on rockband only works on rockband 2 cuz the WT dont work for rockband 1 if some1 smart ass can take a Rockband stock kit Head and put it in the drums.

  • HAHAHAHA it sounds like shit

  • Nice work. I went the GHWT midi route to connect my TD-9

  • relized this was posted a week after rock band came out

guitar hero came out a year after

  • Lol these guys are being assholes about it, but I have a real question about why you're playing on medium. Why are you playing on medium if you have an electronic set, what I mean is, why do you have an electronic set if you can't even play harder difficulties on a game?

  • This was posted a week after the game released. I hadn't played drums in years. I picked up the electronic set used in order to do this mod and was just getting back into it, plus I was nervous and the video was supposed to show off the mod, not my drumming. :)

I have played through the game on expert at this point.

  • lol nervous. That's fine, I was just wondering. Great mod though.

  • I think he can play higher difficulties but is just showing the functionality of these drums. Go to someguy913's profile, and look for him playing Laid To Rest on Expert+ on Guitar Hero, he FC's it, using an electronic set, really cool video.

  • I have to agree with some of the below comments >.> You broke your drums from "heavy playing" but you were on medium? How is that even possible... and to go through ALL that trouble just to keep playing on medium? Pointless. Normal people just get their set fixed, or "nigger rig" it, as it's called. You? You decided to modify the WHOLE thing just to use your Roland drumb set on rockband. No life.

  • u r stupid.

ur buying something as exspensive as rockband and ur breaking it within a week to mod it to play it on medium

  • rock band drums arent expensive, and he knew wat he was doing

  • yea ok heavy play within the first week meenwhile u play on medium.

o yea rockband isnt exspensive. maybbe u have 130.00 dollars to spend but someother ppl dont. gamesstop curently wants 100 for a guitar, maybe a little more for drums.and it even if he knew what he was dooing i agree wit piieman43. this guy has no life

  • lol, why don't you guys pay attention to the time this video was posted? that was 1.5 years ago, he's definitely on expert and is prolly very capable of FCing a lot of songs on expert now.

  • Omg thats the same drumset I have, and im doing this with mine too :]

  • maybe if you played expert it would be worth it to do all that modifying but you do medium so whats the point!!

I could almost every song on expert on my first couple days playing rock band

its not that hard if you know how to play normal drums

  • HOW DID YOU BRAKE YOUR rb DRUM KIT YOUR ONLY OM MEDIUM BUT GOOD MOD ANYWAY

  • all this shit only to play on MEDIUM!!

What the fuck, got get a life dude

  • Nice job. I going to do the same thing.

  • Pretty Gay...because for this reason! Do you know how geeky you sound? hahaha what an easy song too you don't deserve a roland...I do.

  • Lol how do u break it playing weezer ahah

  • I thought I was nerdy!

  • this is cool!! man=D

  • go play football and text you fuckin dick

  • you're the one searching for rock band videos, moron. you're such a dick.

  • this guy will probably end up being your boss at your next job

  • what job??? LOL

  • I have a TD-6 with a mesh head snare, you should really get it! BTW Nice playin

  • I Have A TD-3 With Mesh Head ! They Rock :D

This Would Be Awesome PADS THAT DON'T BREAK AND RESPOND QUICKLY

  • hey man! i have a n electric drumset, and i was wondering if hteres a way just to connect the drum pedal to the rock band set, since the one they give you is utter shit, and i wanna 5 star some songs on expert and that damn pedal is all thats keeping me away

  • no its causee you suck

  • go buy a kick box

  • using this mod isn't kinda laggy? =|

  • fucking frik !!

  • pretty cool man

  • could i buy something like that for my electronic drums? Or do you have to make it yourself?

  • Why would you waste this much time setting this up when you only play on medium?

  • I posted this a few days after Rock Band shipped. I play on expert now, I just haven't bothered to create a new video since there are tons of products on the market that let you do this now.

  • Not an expert here, but couldn't someone just get the Kickbox/J5 and still be able to use their e-kit while playing rockband?

  • yes

  • Yes. You don't seem to have noticed that I posted this on 12-09-2007, days after Rock Band shipped. Those products were not out when I did this.

  • true that lol

  • I was wondering if this was possible. I guess it is. Good job.

  • you sir, are a badass.

  • thats an old td 3 i think. does any one know if this only works on xbox? i have a ps3 and a roland td 3 and id like to learn more about this to see if its worth doing

  • what set is that cause ive never seen a roland without atleast 1 mesh

  • Good God you have a lot of toys

  • gsmart very smart

  • how do u break ur rb drums to that degree from "heavy playing" if u only play on medium???

  • pretty sure he broke the sensore not the whole thing

  • can u do this for the TD 3s also?

  • ive seen you on the rock band forum talking about this...but one thing.....in rock band a tom tom will change into a hi hat in rock band ..... so if you made the hi hat and tom tom both blue on a real drum set, how would you know in the game which one its suppose to be?? you memorize the song???

  • good question

  • you could probably edit the midi note #

  • I wish i had the IQ to set this up with my Roland set!

  • OK if I could do this with My Roland TD it would be SO AWESOME!!!

  • Thanks for all your hard work on the forums. I got my TD-6 hooked up this weekend and it is beyond awesome. Videos soon I hope.

  • how about u turn the set on

  • do i have to be super smart to do this?

  • Not anymore. It is pretty well laid out on the RockBand forums at this point. Or you could just wait until Guitar Hero 4, word on the street is that they are adding MIDI capabilities built in.

  • is it any delay on the note hits?

  • There isn't a significant delay, probably 2-4ms, which is functionally the same time. We have had lots of parties, and played with guitar & singing without any problems.

  • all that just to play medium lmao

  • can this work for wii?

  • Probably, someone would have to take the Wii drums apart to find out.

  • I want that drumset its looks sooo much better then the harmonix drum set.

  • 5000$ are you crazy ? These drums probably cost less than 2000 dollars , they don't have mesh pads and even the snare is rubber. Also the sound module is probably a TD6 or lower and they go for about 1000-1500$

  • I bought them off craigslist for $450 for this project. TD-6 confirmed. I have spent about another $350 on ebay for Pintech mesh pads since then.

  • I just broke my 3rd set of rock band drums, so today I am going to go get some roland drums. Do you know of a website that gives the midi specification about what I should see on those wires? Also do I just use some resistors in between the chip and midi output or do I need something more complicated, if you are using more parts where did you order them from?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

  • rock band 2

    nice job

  • I think that I would be able to play the Rockband game a lot better if I actually had a setup like this instead of using the Rockband drumset. Because it is small and not very easy for me to move around and stuff. But I can play the real drums and haven't been playing for long but I can play a real drumset and make something sound good.

  • that's bad ass, but expensive.......... any... you know, cheaper way?

  • man i wish an online store would sell some sort of drum mod like this with cymbals.

  • actually a question here. if we pulled a hack like this then why not sync the the cymbles to work together instead of using a head?

  • I don't understand the question. They cymbals & the drum heads all work.

  • sounds like theres a delay

  • There wasn't a delay. In that version there was more lag, but you can just re-calibrate the game.

In the current version there isn't even more lag. It plays right along with guitar/vocals great.

  • why oh why that Roland drums costs more than that crappy plastic Rock Band drums

  • The Rock Band drums are as sturdy as saltine crackers. That's why.

  • Im saying why he modded that Roland drums, I know the RB drums sucks, im saying that dont waste that nice Toland Drum for a crappy video game

  • There is no mod to the roland drums. They output MIDI without modification. I moded the RB drums to input MIDI. Win/Win

  • god damn....now thats a real nerd talking you did there...makes a nerd like me look like a noob....you've got some talent!

  • dude thats a great idea im sure its sweet

  • thats sweet, cuz the reg drums have a lot of problems...

  • très cool

  • très cool

  • i wish i could do that but i have neither a game or an electric.

    just acoustic

  • how did u break it on medium?!!?!? lol

  • Fucking mcgyver of rock!!!

  • Dude thats sick

  • thats fuckin awesome

  • And your a worthless piece of shit. Go get a life and stop being an asshole.

  • thats cool

  • finally rock where u can use a hi-hat in the rite place woo awesome kack/mod !!!

  • Far too confusing for mortals to comprehend but ur new set looks amazing. Can u fix the lag though?

  • The lag between the hit and the song is pretty bad. That said, the mod itself is awesome.

  • My brain hurts

  • Who gives a flying fuck what you think. You're a nobody.

  • WOAH FLIPPEN AWESOME

  • Whoa!, during the vid, when you were playing, does the crowd sing along?

  • Yeah they do that sometimes.

  • omg i totally wanna fucking do that lol

  • wat song is that?

  • "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer

  • fookin macguyver! you're my hero dude. you have given me a reason to live for.

  • REALLY COOL MAN! but why?

  • OMG thats awesome dude. You should post details on your setup for the breadboard.

  • that's awsome

  • i dont have a roland digital drum set,but do have a digital drumset, plus rock band....and i totally got to find out how this is done. cause i hate how the two center drum pieces switch.

  • very awesome, also nice setup :)

  • would that microprocessor need to be programmed customly for each electric drumset or depending on what drums you want to trigger what button?

  • I have a long thread on the RockBand forums discussing what I did, helping others, and generally collaborating to figure out the cheapest/easiest way to duplicate this.

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post the schematics so others can duplicate your work!!

  • I have a long thread on the RockBand forums discussing what I did, helping others, and generally collaborating to figure out the cheapest/easiest way to duplicate this.

  • Great -- can you please post a link to that thread here? Thanks!

  • Great! Can you please post a link to that thread here?

  • What do you do when the red pad acts as a hi-hat, like in RttH and Orange Crush?

  • Good question! I hadn't played either of those songs on Expert yet, I'm playing through the game on Hard right now and haven't gotten to RttH yet. I just went and played Orange Crush on expert.

I suppose I'll have to have some kind of toggle which reverses the hat/snare orientation. Maybe that is a good use for the hat pedal which hasn't been used at all up to this point. :)

  • FINALLY SOME SYMBOLS AND HI-HATS LOL

  • Just caught this link from the Rockband forums. Incredible work. Two questions: 1) Does this setup support all the vdrum pads? For example, crash and ride both trigger the green pad.

    2) How can I get this setup? Can you msg me? I'd be more than happy to pay for your time.

  • I'm going to start posting information about it this weekend to the RockBand forums, and possibly here as well.

It supports all vDrum pads. Hi-Hat & Tom1 are yellow, ride & Tom2 are blue, Crash & Tom3 are green. Since the video I've bought a better snare trigger, moved my old snare to be the ride, and moved my old ride up to be crash2 on the right side of the kit. So now I actually have 3 green triggers.

  • Great job, man!

I always wonder why these multi-million dollar companies don't think of building this functionality into the game. They'd lose a few official RB drum kit sales to the tiny percentage of folks that have their own MIDI set... but they'd gain loyal supporters for life.

  • I concur. I think it's only a matter of time before someone comes out with a device to do this. It was a trivial hack for me with the Harmonix drums and I don't have "mad skillz" by any means. There is a clear opportunity here, someone somewhere is paying attention, even if Harmonix isn't...

  • Sweet! Was going to try something like that but with a MIDI-to-USB cable from my TD-10 brain to my 360 and just beat around and hope it triggers something on rock band. Anyways looking forward to the how-to.

  • Good guess, but I went the Software Development, 6 figure salary, lovely wife and a big house route instead. It was basically a coin toss though.

Getting better at drums slowly, got the Flawless Drumming achievement last night though, so it can't be all bad.

  • OWNED.

  • GREAT! ive been looking for someone to do what im too scared to do myself lol. definately looking forward to a howto altho im not too sure ill have the guys to dismantle my rockband drums.

  • Hey this is sweet, but where's the pedal?

I didn't see your feet working at all and I thought I saw the bass pedal note act like it got hit.

  • It was there, and my foot was moving, just not a good camera angle. I'm still working on the circuit/mod. Hope to have a how-to up soon.

  • I was just watching it again. My kit has one of those reverse beaters, and you can just make out the black beater coming into the picture at the bottom center when I'm about to hit the pedal (I play with my foot down normally, and just raise my foot when I'm about to hit the note).

  • if you actually masture Hard in Rock band can you actually play real drumslol or is that what everyones just saying

  • GENIUS

  • Thanks!
