Well, I don't play WoW. Personally I find it too much to play games that take so much time out of my life. However I will give it this. It has a much more friendly interface. Also, it's organized in a way that makes sense. Eve is complicated, which is not a bad thing, simple games are boring, but games that are too complicated are worse. Eve is on the latter side.

It runs only one server on which ALL of its subscribers play together, unlike mmo's like WOW where people can have private servers etc. You can play solo, but you will never get the full extent of EvE without joining some form of corporation, and you most certainly will never own a titan solo.

@Desicionoflife Actually they're being fielded a lot more now. Since the loss of the AoE dooomsday its not unheard of seeing six or so titans (these are major fleet battles) appearing. They INSTAPOP capital ships, and with the huge hp buff are that much harder to kill :)

That depends, are you trying to defeat the titan only or the titan fleet? Either way sometimes its better to take out the firepower in an opposing fleet before taking out the titan. Tactically speaking you always want to get rid of as many guns as possible early on. that means you take out the smallest targets and work you way up to the ones that take longer... However, its entirely dependent on the situation.

eve is not most mmo's the hardware is a bit different as its one sever with a tremendous load instead of ten thousand severs with 1/100th the players on it. Also being how the economy works in eve you'd have to be entirely self sufficient, that is build all your own ships, mine all the ore for such, populate those 500,000 systems, with your 10 buddies who don't want to spend $15 plus whoever you recruit.

thank you for that painfully obvious piece of information. You cannot host your own eve server because of the fact that even high end gaming PCs would burn themselves out on start up. There are 3 EVE servers you can connect to... Tranquility = Live server where everyone is. Singularity where you find bug hunters and GMs toying around with the next expansion with people who are bored. And Multiplicity where CCP tests the next expansion prior to release on singularity. So as i said.. this isnt WoW

A server is not that hard to run on a PC. The difficulty is having a connection with the necessary bandwidth for all the I/O requests from players and a data storage array that can quickly respond to those I/O requests. A current quad core CPU would have no problem covering 500 people making requests. It's just that the internet connection and the harddrives can't keep up.

There are a few reasons why hosting your own EVE server would be difficult:

1) There are multiple components of the EVE server which have to communicate with each other flawlessly - the character node, the market node, the system node, the database and whatever other little secrets CCP has.

2) Virtually ALL computations are done on the server side. Reverse engineering the server code means rewriting EVE from scratch.

@MiniChiken actually you are an idiot if you think there is only one "server" to run eve. yes we all play on the same network, but it is a cluster or datacenter of computers networked together. everytime you dock/undock and change systems, you are migrating to a new server. if you really wanted, you could host your own private system on your own computer, but you would have no connection to ccp at that point and any information that changed on your server vs. thiers would not migrate over.
