  • all the songs cash re-did are better than the original versions "one-bye Ru2" and "i wont back down-bye tom petty" are good examples, he was just so mellow in his singing and knew how to draw a crowd and make them cheer

  • <3 johnny cash, we all love you so very much.

  • Incredible, I'm sorry he had to feel like this in his last years without June.

  • so forlorn is my friend's voice...so so so much do I love ya Johnny for I hear your spirit in mine.

  • Excellent video.

  • Johnny Cash will NEVER die. Not in five years, or even thirty. The ups and he downs are what made him a legend. I only wish to feel a love similar to the love him and June shared.

  • Najdraza:*

  • This is a song originally written by Gordon Lightfoot, a canadian singer...

  • Johnnys voice will missed forever

  • hmm ever think maybe his lady liked it ?

    one last tribute ?

How proud is Gordon Lightfoot ?

  • Lovely video and song :) !

  • God love Johnny, but listen to Gordon Youngs original, just as beautiful. No matter how you sing it, if you feel it, it hits you where it you dont want it.

  • @tsu7225 It's actually Gordon Lightfoot, the guy who wrote the "Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Carefree Highway"and yes his origional is fantastic.

  • @FuelnGuts

Yep, you're right. My Mistake, no idea how I got Young from Lightfoot...busy day! Love Cash but think Gordons original is superb. Gordon Young was a musician, according to Wiki he was a composer of over 800 hymns....not sure how many were gospel though.

  • @tsu7225 This is like Cash's Hurt, Personal Jesus and Solitary Man. No matter how you feel about the original Cash never attempts to reinvent the wheel, but simply brings his own talent to the music. By doing that, he owns his version without taking away from the original.

  • I hope you got an A for this, well done.

  • You would know how much I love you :) A <3

  • I only know who this is because of Katy Perry. What a sad world...

  • 29 people lost their minds

  • Absolutely well done. Well done.

  • Fuckin' awesme job on this video dude 5 stars

  • been a big time Cash fan... a Heavy metal guy like me who just loves Cash.. this song makes me tear up every time.. and yes a REAL man can say he's teared up in life

  • WELL DONE!

  • I can never get through listening to this song without shedding a tear or two. Cash really brought the emotion out in this song. Especially when he gets to the part where he sings "I never thought I would feel this way, and I've got to say that I just don't get it" and his voice breaks right there, and you can feel the pain he is feeling while singing this song. That's probably why I don't listen to this song all that often. That said, Cash did a great cover of it.

  • wow nice thumbs up :'(

  • @bboooobbyy if you prefer the other song, then why are you listening to this one

  • My first song of 2012 =)

  • What's the name of the book, in the video, my friend?

  • @jonesable1 I'd say, "One Over the Cuckoo's Nest", by Ken Kesey (the reference to McMurphy is the giveaway)

  • @bgrodner RP McMURPHY

  • excellent video ^_^!!! ~

  • i like the ghost playing the strings on guitar, good video, well done ..

  • As a Lightfoot fan, and a Cash fan, I'm glad I don't have to choose which is better. RARELY does an artist cover a song as good as the writer, but Johnny Cash comes pretty dang close! I love both versions! Thanks to both of these great singers AND to daniel88yeye, GREAT VIDEO sir, I stand in awe!

  • 2:03 , lol the books on fire

    great song thr

  • Sounds Great!

  • I love Johnny, and almost every cover he has done... but I really think that the original is better in this case.

  • Gordon Lightfoot wrote this song, a great Canadian folk singer

  • Beautiful video, beautiful song, done beautifuly by a legend.

  • beatiful just beatiful

  • i think i like this better than the original

  • man , I feel like crying , . . . amazing ,

  • Achingly beautiful.

  • i don't understand where i went wrong. i did nothing but love and support her for 5 years, and she cheats on me, lies about it, and won't tell me why. my feelings are going, and i'm not sure if i'll be able to get them back.

thank you johnny for giving me the courage to find the words to explain this.

  • @ghostnappa666 Dont worry brother, your not alone. Im going through something similar with my ex-fiance. I guess that it may never make sense. Unfortunately

  • You here about celebrities and musicians referred to as gods of their genre. Yet here is a man who would have strongly rejected such a tittle yet had the ability to surface and express the utter most deepest part of the soul in an unmistakable way as to stir both passion and despair and keep us coming back for more. for me he was/is an excellent example of deity manifested.

  • @Argonaught25 i couldn't agree more, johnny is the only musician that actually make me "feel" the intended emotion in songs

  • @Argonaught25 you mispelled "TITLE" but i here where yer comin from

  • @L124357

    Blame spell check.

  • Johnny knew that his time was coming to and end he could feel his broken heart telling him, he lost the will to live cuz his wife June died and i think this song done by him is so beautiful simply amazing song and video.

  • @BTMS22 I hate the pain in his voice, but at the same time, it brings out the best in him. This must have meant so much to him, as you say, losing June Carter.

The words "I don't know where we went wrong" didn't fit with them, but the sentiments of the song, a lost love was obvious. JC, thank you.

  • @BTMS22 really? i thought june died 35 days after him... hmm i guess im just stupid

  • @smellybut123

June died a few months before him. That is what killed him. That empty spot in his bed where his wife used to sleep.

  • Love it truly amazing

  • nice vid danny :)

  • RIP Johnny Cash.

  • This is an amazing song and video. I first saw the combination of the two on you tube about four years ago, when I was going through an incredibly painful crisis. It's nice to revisit it, to see it through healthy eyes, to appreciate the visuals along with Johnny's uniquely powerful voice, and to know that I can enjoy viewing it without going back to where I was four years ago. Peace.

  • great video...captured brilliantly. The floating rose was visual genius! and was the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest??

  • nice job on the video, thanks for uploading

  • I think Gordon got beaten, its not a surprise for me

  • This will always be Gordon's song, regardless who else does it....

  • good try, not nearly as good as GL, and quite frankly kinda kills the song, but once again good try..

  • @RedWhiteBlue59 That works too. BTW, thanks for bringing me back to this video... Ahhh. Now i can relax..

  • A missed voice and man. He left us with his strong voice.

  • THAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE CAN ONLY COME FROM A MAN WHO HAD A HARD LIFE

  • You did a great job on this video!!! I really like how Johnny sings this song, very haunting! I can't stop crying after listening to this today!!! Thanks for posting!!

  • 27 people don't know what they're missing.

  • There are some musicans some alive/dead who deserve respect, YOU cant say for example "johnny cash sucks" cause i mean it dosent mather what you personally like him or not. I dont like all kind of music, i pretty mutch hate the modern-mainstream-bullshitmusic,

But i dont listen too johnny cash as mutch as i want too, iam tired of beatles i dont like frank sinatra. i dont listen to elvis..But you cant say they/him or her sucks..cause well...you will sound like an idot

  • Thank you Johny!

  • His voice makes this song so much sadder than it should be. I love this.

  • NICE R.I.P. JOHNNY

  • Comment removed

  • There's just so much heartbreak and tenderness in his version of this; if there's such a thing as a sad miracle, this is it.

  • @echadmeir I think this is because Cash recorded this in the period between his wife June's death and his own. You can hear the pain in his voice. I think I almost teared up when I first heard it.

  • I obviously love Gordon Lightfoot's version, but man this cover has feeling...amazing

  • @spazzywindmill Johnny Cash certainly did a great job covering some songs that many artists shouldn't have even touched. At his best, he was able to convey the emotions in the song or even improve upon them. There's a reason why his version of NIN's Hurt is seen as such an accomplishment. And I agree, the cover gives you a feeling that is hard to describe. The way his voice cracks in the middle just gets me every time.

  • Fantastic

  • Johnny's covers are always righteous

  • Love the solitude and regret that Johnny puts into his version; I'd only liked Gordon Lightfoot's own (also wonderful) version before

  • Once Johnny cash does your song, Its not yours anymore.

  • @scoot32497 absolutely.

  • @scoot32497 true

  • @scoot32497 It's true :-)

  • @scoot32497 “When I record somebody else's song, I have to make it my own or it doesn't feel right. I'll say to myself, I wrote this and he doesn't know it!”

  • @scoot32497 Fuck you. Lightfoot dies it better

  • @bboooobbyy You shut your whore mouth up

  • @scoot32497 I prefer the original so why don't you shut the hell up.

  • Johnny Cash covering Gordan Lightfoots song. That's a tribute to a great song and songwriter.

  • Awesome video, even more amazing song! Johnny Cash rulesss!!!!!

  • fuck ya jpr motherfuckers

  • Just Beautiful! His voice is full emotion! <3

  • I have to say this is on of the best made videos I have seen in Youtube, my congratulations and thanks for the hard work

  • DEAR JR , I KNOW YOUR NOT AROUND ANYMORE BUT IN OUR MINDS AND HEARTS. I REMEMBER THE DAY WE WALKED GUITARS IN HAND ACROSS THE OLD CARTER HOMESTEAD, THE STORIES YOU TOLD ME THAT HAVE STAYED LOCKED UP IN MY HEART SINCE AND ALWAYS WILL EVEN THE STORIES YOU HAD NEVER TOLD A SOUL. IM NOT THE SAME ANY MORE JR. I FOLLOWED YOUR ADVICE, I FINALLY MADE IT FROM BETWEEN THE WISDOM OF YOU AND GORDON. TRADGICALY I WOUND UP IN AN ACCADENT AND GOT PARALIZED. THANK YOU MY DEAREST FRIEND. krscampbell@yahoo.com

  • @KingKris1979 you knew Johnny?

  • wonderful video. amazing

  • you did a nice job well done. The minor chords in Cash' version are better than Lightfoots.

  • @salerio61 TO LET YOU KNOW GORDON WOULD PROBABLY PUNCH YOU IN THE MOUTH FOR EVEN SAYING THAT TO JR, BECAUSE AS A LIFE LONG FRIEND OF GORDONS HE COULDNT OF BEEN ANY MORE HAPPIER WITH THE VERSION OF THE SONG. I MISS YOU JR AND JR JUNE BUGS BABY COUSIN TUCKER I THINK IS TRYING TO FILL YOU SHOES. HE'S HAS A LONG WAYS BUT IS THE GREATEST KID.

  • thank you Daniel88eye. I enjoyed Johnny Cash's version of this song. Its tone reminds me of the last video in which he performed.

  • hero fail thats my life

  • I like this cover. Lightfoot's tone of the song is reflective. With Cash, I picture him alone in the dark with his guitar, a bottle of whiskey and a cigarette singing this. It makes it really dark.

  • gordon lightfoot (canadian) had a lot of songs that would make you cry! try him singing this, rainy day people, edmund fitzgerald, sundown. and early mornin' rain just to name a few. if you do not shed a tear your cold as ice.

  • LOOOOOOL

  • Cant believe how good this version is. Feel like crying

  • Beautiful vid. Those shots of the guitar cut me up. JC is very revealing in the way performs other peoples songs.

  • wow

  • I really like this video its really good

  • Beautiful work, Brother

a fitting tribute to the heartfelt voice of the singer

and the moving words of the songwriter

    Thank you for sharing.

    Blessed be...

    *♡*

  • any song this man covers, he owns it, pure brilliance.

  • does anybody know which video on youtube of this song actually had a cool video with it? there was a video with old movies and stuff with it, but I can't find it anymore

  • 23 motherfuckers

  • This is A Gordon Lightfoot song but Johnny's delivery is superb and Gordon Lightfoot must have been impressed. The video is a great salute to both artists

  • @Nicholsontheatre19 Leonard Cohen wrote it.

  • @friday0408 Thanks is there a Leonard Cohen copy available. That dude was cool.

  • @friday0408 Actually, Gordon Lightfoot wrote this. Not Leonard Cohen.

  • this is the only cover song by johnny cash that i don't think is better than the original, but then again Mr. Lightfoot's version would have been pretty hard to top

  • Does anyone know if the late great Johnny Cash recorded this towards the end of his life? I'm asking because his voice just sounds so week and frail. This is not a critcism, because I think it works very well, I was just wondering that's all.

  • @MrJohnop

Its off his album American Recordings V, his second last album i think so yea its near the end of his life. One of the best albums ever in my opinion. So many good tunes

  • @MrJohnop

Song is off Amercian Recordings V, his 2nd last album I believe so yea its near the end of his life. One of the best albums ever in my opinion. So many good tunes

  • this sounds like my grandpa. im a metal lover but in my earliest memories my dad would always play gordan lightfoots version of this song && i chose it to be my father dauughter dance at my wedding. the melody is beautiful but cash's voice is a huge turn off.

  • why this not on i tunes?

  • great video mate ;)

  • great song

  • Shame on anyone in here taking a shot at Johnny or Gordon for that matter. Music is to be shared. Gordon approved of Johnny singing this and that's all that matters.

  • @TheManFromAcme And for the proof, you should watch Mr Lightfoot and Mr Cash performing together on the Johnny Cash show! Gordon actually tells Johnny he wishes he would cover more of his songs! Search for the video Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash For lovin' Me

  • This is a great cover of Gordon Lightfoot. The best part is you know Johnny Cash only did covers of songs he liked. And how could you not love this song?

  • Both versions are bloody brilliant for different reasons, why not just like 'em both?

  • Anyone who dislikes this song doesn't really appreciate great songwriting. I normally listen to bands like Clutch or Corrosion of Conformity. But when I hear this song I get chills down my spine and it give me an indescribable sensation.

  • I have great respect for Johnny Cash, God rest his soul. He was a talented singer and good man. But this song, If You Could Read My Mind Love he should have never recorded. This is a Gordon Lightfoot classic and NOBODY sings it with the same feeling as Gordon, certainly not Johnny. I've listened to both versions and had I been Johnny I would have never released my recording of this song. Just like Gordon Lightfoot has no business recording A Boy Named Sue.

  • @Kimberlyexpects Who cares about your opinion or even which version is better? Why compare? Listen to one or the other, simple as that. People using comparative terms on cover videos usually have invalid points and childish opinions. Sorry to have to flame you.

  • Shit, I'm reading that book RIGHT NOW

  • this is a wonderful cover, Johnny's voice is perfect for this lyrics, and the video is pretty nice too

  • @Smackdaddy9 look at your name you dirty fucking whore tramp.

  • this is incredible. are people out there so closed to interpretation as to think this is anything but a man baring his pain and his melancholy? a stunning cover from a genius, who knew he was on the way out. who cares which version is / was better. theyre both great. its a fantastic song. get over it.

  • @Blackniite

    Couldn't agree more.

    Respect to Johnny Cash always.

And to Gordon Lightfoot for writing such a wonderful song.

  • Ugh,,, this is horrible.. Lightfoots original trounces this,,and i like Cash.. But this sounds like hes singing it 3 days after a stroke.

  • @SavageSS2010 Suck my dick, canadian suck boy.

  • @Smackdaddy9 sorry , Im not gay,, but since obviously YOU are a screamin queer and want your cock in other men , heres an idea,, go fuck yourself , you wont even have to leave the house. bitch.

  • @SavageSS2010 There's a reason for that; Cash sang this as he was DYING (not immediately before death, obviously. His entire last album sounds like this). To me, that just gives it more power. Much respect to Lightfoot, but to me, his version sounds too...I dunno, clean? Hard to explain. With Cash's version, you can hear the pain in every word, and you realize that he chose to sing these songs knowing they would be his last. That makes this version way better than Lightfoot's to me.

  • @orannis62 The Lightfoot version of this song is beautiful, but this version is very powerful. This whole album reminds me of Billie Holiday's last album, when she was dying and knew she was dying and people thought she sounded terrible and she went ahead and sang anyway. It's just raw and achingly sad and full of loss.

  • deep shit

  • Johnny Cash. thank you for recording this. I hope you and June are Happy with the Lord now. you have a nice day. Curt.

  • Man of song .Young old,and everything in between.

  • This is so raw, so powerful, so painful ... Devastating. I can't make it through one verse without choking up. A brilliant song done straight from the heart of a legend.

Thank you Mr. Cash, I pray that you are at peace.

  • ahh fuck.....

  • I did bring out all of the good things in you! jAZZ

  • This is hauntingly sad and lovely.

  • Lightfoots version is better. Still a great song.

  • @MaJolieLouise Agreed.

  • Johnny Cash sounds like he's in massive pain singing this song, it's kinda like he's dying or something.

  • @Joeykm1972 He Was dying mate..

  • he's got many powerful covers

  • Fucking 90's. Those sluts from stars on 54 ruined this song for me forever.

  • A great video

  • Wow Cash sounds a bit off - no offense. :( Good song though...

  • @mysticalwoodsman - Cash off? When he recorded this his body have given up on him... He had lost the ability to walk and was mostly confined to a wheelchair, he was legally blind and his internal organs were being eaten alive with diabetes and neuropathy. His immune system had shut down, and he had been plagued with several bouts of pneumonia. Most devistating was that he had just lost the love of his life June Carter. The fact that he recorded these songs at all is NOTHING SHORT of a MIRACLE.

  • Johnnys awesome! But i much prefer Gordan Lightfoots version

  • I love Johnny Cash but this one is far below par

  • I LOVE Johnny cash, but as hard as it is to admit, Lightfoots versions is much better. He's Mono tone in this song a little.

    Johnny Cash = American Legend <3 .

  • this just doesn't do it for me like the original does.

  • @SICKHEADCENTRAL who is the original singer?

  • @ellimac4 gordon lightfoot

  • @SICKHEADCENTRAL u just dont get it

  • @jefferico1 opinions are subjective not objective, don't be so ignorant to the opinion of others.

  • Just love this song--- Kind of sad but lovely : ))
