Just because Atheists don't believe in god, doesn't mean they don't believe in an afterlife. It's one thing to sacrifice your life so that the child can live and something else entirely to do it because you think doing so will give you a reward from a higher being. Letting the child live is the reward itself even if it comes at the expense of your own life. You don't need a religion to be a good person.

An intelligent person, whether atheist or not, would take the child and jump out of the plane with her.
Basically what you have here is a false dichotomy. Maybe the person taking the parachute is a highly specialized pediatric surgeon whose 50 or so critically ill youthful patients would die if she were not to return within the next 4 hours. Would it be morally just to save the one child and let the rest die? It's just not that simple.
Your analogy is an oversimplification of life.
