"this picture is dedicated to the fifty" it makes me smile every time kind of heart warming :) this is the kind of movie i watch on a sunday afternoon.. and a sunday afternoon well spent !
Well not entirely, see at the end were Hilts is throwing the baseball against the wall, it shows their determination and will to get themselves through the war, they all know what was on the line, Alot of the crew didn't really want to escape to get back home to england, but to set up a new frond behind enemy lines
@goldieboylover986 In the real world, the good guys don't always win. Maybe try taking that into account the next time you're watching a movie based upon actual events.
@HowDyaYouLikeMeNow yes, but in the movie world, especially in the movie world of a movie that is almost 3 hours long, they better have a satisfying ending that isnt just a giant big "FUCK YOU" to those who cared about the characters. there isnt even a damn epilogue or explanation to what happened later. so in a way, the movie doesnt have an ending. it just fucks you over and makes you hate it. which sucks because i really liked this.
@goldieboylover986 That's a personal opinion, right there. There are plenty of people who loved this movie. It's not about the escape, it's about the indomitable spirit of the Allied forces. Even those already captured and imprisoned. Why do you think Steve McQueen became the symbol of this film?
@HowDyaYouLikeMeNow you see, thats another thing i didnt get. why he was such a big deal when he barely did anything and was more a side-charecter. maybe he was so beloved because he was well-known in the first place?
still, i wanted to like this film, but the ending was dissapointing.
They filmed this right outside Munich though the opening doesn't let on. They used university students to play most of the guards and soldiers chasing the POWs. McQueen rode the motorcycle both as Hilts and as one of the germans chasing Hilts.
To think the studio execs seriously thought they could film this in southern California - like they did 'The Young Lions' (Dean Martin, Mont Clift, Marlon Brando & Max Schell) until someone set them straight. Rubber string wound to look like barbed wire.
I would have to imagine that german soldier, when he walks away after locking up Hilts, smiling. Because I think he likes hearing Hilts throwing the baseball around the wall.
Well, movies set in World War II prisoner camps are very similar at times in the setting and overall feel.
I enjoyed the Pele movie with Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine (in Germany it was called (Flucht oder Sieg" according to imdb) but "The Great Escape" (or "Gesprengte Ketten" as you call it) is simply one of the greatest war films ever made.
@thomsonfly645k Maybe it was called the "cooler" as an irony, because in the summertime, that room could be real hot. It is certainly no icebox. O rmaybe as someone said, prisoners are put there to "cool off" when they misbehave.
@54spiritedwill54 Well certainly, at the very least, one of the greatest (WWII flicks, anyway)!! A truly superb **classic**. (The only other 2 WWII films from that same period that compare are *The Guns of Navarone* & *The Dirty Dozen*; *The Longest Day* is certainly not bad, but isn't quite (almost, perhaps, admittedly, yet not quite) with these three...). This film is a, again, a CLASSIC, a GEM!
@Chunbitten True enough!!! **PATTON** is definitely a CLASSIC, virtually in class all by itself. But, when it comes to "caper" and/or "task force" type plots, it's hard to beat *The Guns of Navarone*, *The Great Escape*, and *The Dirty Dozen*. But, speaking of true stories---and one hell of a rescue mission, and one hell of a movie----see *The Great Raid*.
I'm from Germany and I live in Munich with the Alpes nearby and almost everytime I see them I remember the motorcycle scene with Steve McQueen. Everytime I watch the DVD, I hope that there's a secret ending, where he did the jump over the fence into Switzerland!!!
this video don't have the correct audio only has the theme really so don't see why the gaurd stops at 1 point... even so tho gr8 ending and defo 1 of the best movies of all time
again does catch with the wall alone, and by hearing the sound of catch, the german soldier stopped and turn his face a little to the cooler..This ending is very brilliant!

what a horrible ending that just ruins the whole film!!
they dont escape, 50 of them gets brutally slauthered and the camps gets taken over by the gestapo.
HOW IS THIS A GOOD ENDING???
it just sucks everything out of it and makes you hate the film for taking almost 3 hours just to dissapoint you BIG time
it is an ending that just says:
"fuck you for liking any of the characthers in this film and thanks for the money"

You are talking about another movie entirely, "Escape to Victory", or just plain "Victory". Came out nearly 20 years after this one.
Back to the cooler for the "Cooler King" at the end. But wow, how he tried...
