  • Very nice. I never knew this was a true story until I saw the tombstone.

  • Great job!! Video complements the song well!

  • They are making new "Ira Haye's" everyday...Look at the men who killed Osama.

  • white man can go to hell

  • @johnkiedis27 fuck yeah

  • @johnkiedis27 what did i ever to do to you

  • Has anyone seen Flags Of Our Fathers? He dies of sun exposure in Mexico after telling Hank's father that Hank wasn't the fourth guy to raise the flag.

  • great video thanks for the post.

  • The American Indians were shit on by our Goverment from day one!, still are!! Now every working persons time is at hand. It is just a matter of time, before they take away everything we fought for to make this country what it is.

  • I noticed your propagated photo of George Bush in reference to the greedy white man. President Bush took great steps to protect all Americans. Remember, Jesus loves George just as much as he loves you.

  • Wow! Fantastic video! Didn't Tony Curtis play the role of Ira in a flick? BTW - if asked, W would have stated appreciation for Ira more than FDR would have. Fact.

  • @elvisworldwide Yes and Ira played himself in the 49 wayne film Sand of Iwo Jima

  • This MARINE this AMERICAN was AND IS a HERO in every sense of the word. Its too bad our PETTY discriminations prevented this man and hero from being able to do what he wanted after the war. Maybe ( I HOPE) someday we as a nation and people won't have any more discrimination. I am a veteran 38 yrs. U.S. Army. Just recently retired. I wish I would have had the honor and privledge of meeting Corporal Ira Hayes. Great video, I hope others see this and reflect.

  • The purpose of the song is clearly to criticise the way in which the US has treated its natives, not to tell us how wonderful war is.

  • Thanks to all you veterans whatever era- there are people simple people just like

me all over this country who don't take what you did and gave for granted- God Bless You

  • id like to honour my brother.... tanks nbro

  • Ira Hayes, true American hero.

  • cool i have to do a report on johnny cash and someone in my class is doooooooin a report bout a ira heyes

  • Ira Hayes haunted me for a day or two. I lived next to Arlington, at Henderson Hall. Don't ask me how I know it was him, but it was him. Scared the bejesus out of me.

  • Henderson Hall -- in re the first Commandant of the Corps? Being a Marine, perhaps, he wanted to be with Marines.

  • @ErnstBecker

Henderson Hall, which is touching Ft. Myer in Virginia and is attached to this Army post via a gated walk way. Ft. Myer being the duty station of the US Army "Old Guard" and attached to Arlington National Cemetery where Ira's body lies in the "Garden of Stone". Ira's grave always did have a special importance to be while I was stationed there. As well as Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing's grave.

  • Leeving:

Thanks for the information. One of the few Marine Corps League buildings owned by the League is lcoated in South Tucson. Ira Hayes's picture decorates one of the wlls along with others, as well as Easy Company Korea era Vets. It is a good place to drop by a have a beer.

  • Becker:

You know what? After I get back from Afghanistan, if they would have a Army Honor Guard there, I would feel genuinely privileged to park my kiester there and soak some suds. Would be a good way to see America from where I'm at in PA and pay tribute to a genuine American Hero.

  • The beer is on me ! After all you great men and women have gome through you deserve the Grand Canyon. What part of PA?

  • Leeving30:

GOD knows that you and your buddies deerve it.

    Salute !

  • folsom90 - Very well-conceived and well-made video. But what in hell does George Bush have to do with Ira Hayes,Iwo Jima, cheating the Indians,or anything else about this story? You seem to be linking him>corporate greed> deprivation of native people. I'll just keep it simple, and this ain't about politics, just people ; despite the 8 yrs of brainwash,I submit to you that Pres Bush isn't that kind of person. Hope you realize that some day. But finally, thanks for this clip,it's a great song.

  • Flattilre, every soldier and vet matters, the reason this is about Ira is because Ira felt that he did not deserve the fame he reaped and that the ones you mentioned did, he had a tremendous amount of guilt, integrity and a lot of humility but people constantly intruded on his personal life making him a tourist attraction and not recognizing his actions but the fact that he was "an indian soldier." Ballads are just songs, remembering is from the heart, we can remember those fallen without song.

  • Well said.

  • Thank you, limited space but I tried lol.

  • are you whitepower or what?

shut the fuck up please, i hate rascists.

  • You do sound like you are full of hate. Like you are consumed by hate. Is hate your life?

  • do i look like i need a psyciatre???

  • Well, now that you mention it . . .

  • ok... i'll tell you... rascists need help not me

  • jmurra03 speaks of the over 6,000 Marines and Corpsmen that were KIA in Iwo Jima. Gen. Kuribashi's last order, " your fighting hole is your tomb, kill 10 soldiers before you die". Aftre 28 years in the CORPS, only a Marine could understand who a brother Marine is in combat.

  • so in order to make a song he has to make 223 other ones? You are implying that if he doesn't make a song for each and every marine involved then he is disgracing the others.

  • @jmurra03 :

When were you in the Corps? If you never wore the Eagle, Globe and Anchor then shut the HELL up !

  • How is this in response to a statement i made? Exactly how did my statement not make logical sense or disgrace the Marine Corps? I'm a soldier so don't act like I can't understand concepts related to duty and serving your country.

  • Comment removed

  • We only stopped Hitler, not alot of marines let the Corps live larger than yourself. Mr. Becker please be quiet.

  • When were you in the CORPS? The Hwell you say, I fought for my right to speak and didn't sit on my ass playing video games and drinking banana daquis.

  • Your deduction, not mine.

  • You're a pogue aren't you?

  • In part, by name, by blood, and by thought.

  • Semper Fi

  • words of truth

  • Ira Hayes is very well remembered in the Corps, being a former Marine, the Corps still educates recruits about Famous Marines. May you rest in Peace Brother Marine. Semper Fi.

  • Well said.

    SF

  • This Song exits with Czech lyrics too, good video, Tribute for every brave Soldiers, who fought for Freedom, against Japanese Nacionalism, German and Italian Fascism; Sorry for my poor English.

  • No spelling worries. Well said, "Admiral."

  • I just sent a message to a Marine I know asking about Ira Hayes...We'll see...

  • Great Video

    To any Marines;

Is Ira Hayes still talked about and celebrated in the Corps today?

  • Absolutely! I asked my Marines couple months ago. They knew exactly who Ira was.

    Semper Fi!

  • LOL I Slapped one of my Marines in the back of the head for not knowing who he was lol

  • man i love gettn stoned to this song

  • A true American HERO

  • Wow! I didn't know George W Bush took the Indians water! Fuck you liberals! Semper Fi!

  • WOW! i thought it took some brains to be a marine SIC SEMPER TYRANUS

  • I have not heard that song in years, was one of my father's favorites

  • Love the song..but GW stole the Indians water rights?....really...

  • As a little kid in the late 50's (America) WW2 was still fresh in everyone's minds. I clearly remember this song in the mid 60's and as my Dad explained it to me I "got it". War is Hell. May God Bless All Who Served!

  • Johnny Cash may or may not have known the thing about the dam, but he didn't write the song anyway, it's by a folk singer named Peter LaFarge, and Cash made it famous.

  • Heartbreakingly true ... thank you for posting this...you did an excellent job on

    the video folsom90!

  • Nice...Not bad at all for a first Vid,

    Im Enjoying your Tribute !!

    Wage Peace

  • Why is hero in inverted commas in the description?

  • Ira firmly rejected the title of hero, because he did not feel that he deserved it.

  • Even before the damming, the Gila was an intermittent stream at best in the Phoenix area. After seeing "Lake" San Carlos, Will Rodgers (a Cherokee himself) joked "If that were my Dam, I'd mow it!"

  • Since the Pima were farmers and never in conflict with whites, there are no treaties. The rights of tribes with treaties usually take precedent. Same thing has happened with the Navajo takeover of most of Hopi land in NE Arizona.

  • Johnny Cash probably did not know this, but the Gila River was dammed to provide water to the San Carlos Apache Reservation, not the "white man". The Apache tribe owns the reservoir and the BIA owns the dam. Coolidge was President at the time.

  • ok so whats your point? this "white man" didnt commit genocide against the indians then?

  • Huh???

  • are you slow in the head?

  • Only before I've had my coffee.

  • let's hope that this song can help the world to focus more on "post traumatic stress disorder".

Ira hayes clearly suffered from that and so do many of the guys coming back from iraq and afghanistan these days and these guys need help or they will die in a ditch like ira hayes no matter what their ethnic background is.

  • america couldnt be a better place without us natives

    P.S its natives not indians

  • Comment removed

  • george bush was not a good picture for that, he aboviously wasnt aloud. and he shouldnt be compared to the men who took land from the indians.

  • I had to do this song for Seminar. It's really good.

    Johnny Cash is amazing.

  • Amazing? I'll do you one better. He was the voice of America if there ever was one.

  • good video well done

  • Rest In Peace

  • just love this song

i makes you think how the world is

  • this song is as much about how the white man stole the land from the indians and turned it into their own capatalistic way as anything else. See a reoccurance here? maybe across the world? instead of land and gold, its now oil. how selfish and self righteous can people be?become american and then who cares! sure you rule the world! what about the african countries, zimbabwe for example. as much a tyrant as hussain. but no oil! be proud to be american!and be proud to be murderers!

  • Before you point out my country's faults, don't forget your country fucked over indians too. You're just jealous cause ours have casinos and kick ass folk songs. And don't start this shit about oil and not helping countries without any; your country has no interest in any place that's tea-less or has a decent dental plan. You should be thanking us that you're not speaking goddamn German right now, you limey fuck.

  • You are an ass ... you just can't rely on what USA's done in the past to justify what America's doin' now ...

  • There are few countries out there who do not have things to be ashamed of which contradict the values their politicians speak of which continue to this very day and this very second.

Some people and countries are obviously far more evil than others, but everyone can, and should, do better.

  • And YOU can't blame a guy for trying! I sincerely apologize that my country's stance on global injustices isn't "neutrality", and I must also ask for forgiveness that the U.S. of A doesn't just sit around talking about the atrocities and crazed dictators and wishing someone would stop them. As my one-testicle bartender/babysitter used to say: Wish in one hand and shit in the other, then see which one fills up first.

  • you know i respect everyone from Ira Hayes and Johnny Cash's generation but this modern american gerneration is so spoiled and they dont want war and they say they know everything that happened when they have all of daddy's or mommy's money to spend. And it just makes me mad and you can spam this comment or you can thumb it down.or the creator can delte it but i just said my mind and R.I.P. Ira Hayes and R.I.P. Johnny Cash

  • @Jorjoh1 I'm 64 myself and I seem to remember every generation has always said that about the younger generation but someway we always manage to struggle through and we even manage to have a war every generation even though the younger generation is always weak and spoiled. We haven't even had a draft since Vietnam and we still manage to have wars. Nothing ever changes. The more things change the more they remain the same.

  • @Jorjoh1 I won't 'spam' the comment or thumb it down at all; I can agree to a lot of what you said! This song is so haunting!

  • 3:58 I gotta get that shirt.

  • Semper Fi

  • I love how Bush is the white man that stole the water. The other day when I was traveling I saw someone spray painted Impeach Bush three times with white lettering on a huge rock on the highway, I agree entirely but it's too late to impeach him now he's almost out of office. And in we usher another idiot.

  • It's never to late to do the right thing. Although, cowardice never rests in Washington.

  • He needs to be brought to justice, in or out of office. We need to restore justice or we will remain a military empire ruled by corporatists. To honor men like Ira Hayes, our generation must insist on doing the right thing.

  • Our generation needs to dig itself out of this rut first.

  • Ira Hayes got screwed the same as the rest of our servicemen. Everyone should read the book "War is a Racket" by WW I Marine Corps Hero Brigadier General Smedley Butler.

  • I'm pretty sure Butler was a four star, not a Brigadier. He was Commandant of the Corps. Google "Prescott Bush and Coup" Butler saved us from fascism the last time these scum tried to do it to us. We're all going to have to step up this time.

  • Comment removed

  • Smedley Butler was only a Major General (two stars), not a General (four stars). And he was never Commandant. He was passed over for the post in favor of Ben H. Fuller from Big Rapids, MI even though Butler was the senior Major General in the Corps' at the time. He voluntarily retired shortly thereafter.

  • This is a planned outcome for an honest american serving his country. His story is hardly original, but is a historic fact in the treatment of servicemen and civilians. Ask the great white senator from Arizona's wife about her pathetic fortune.

  • to he was a hero to me princess barnaby i will always love him he was the bravest and right now i am the bravest and so against that of our kind is soo white and dont like it

  • My dad loves this. So cheers for this mate!

  • i just read flags of our fathers yesterday, hearing about Ira's life in a song like this is pretty sad

  • I didn't know this song was based on a real story until today.

  • Vinnyhoagas:

It is given taht any Marine willprotect another with his life if necessary. That is a difficult concept for civilians to understand. It has been that way since the Corps was born.

    Semper Fi,

    Ernst Becker

  • ErnstRhomeBecker,Any family will protect another family member with his or her life if necessary, thats not a difficult concept to understand. Semper Fi , Vin.

  • Vinny:

If you were in the Corps, you would understand. It is a Marine thing. The Marine Corps was born at Tun Taven,Philadelphia, Pennslyvania on 10 NOV 1775. Don' label mein nom mit Ernst Rhome, that fag, that Shitler executed.

  • With all due respect to the good people in the USMC,Any tight group can be loyal to the death,That's a human thing. Re. the gay nazi,Ernst, just ribbing you a bit,not personal, sport.

  • 10-4, understood

  • Long live the USMC,+ ErnstBecker.

  • If you were not in the CORPS, then shut the hell up. Xin loi my boy -- you must be a fag because you bought it up.

  • Well said Vinny,

    SF

  • Thanx for the knowledge VinnieHoags...U have alot to offer..♥

  • A nice tribute to Ira. R.I.P John +Ira.

  • my social studies made us watch this video at school. then for like the next week we had this stuck in our head!!!! but then he gave us a HUGE test on ira and the war!!!! then we stopped singing this song!

    i like the video btw

  • idk why but Ira Hayes is a hero to me

    R.I.P Ira

  • Danny Boy:

Listen Irish -- The Tohono of the Desert, Northern Pima, Ira's people, reside near the Gila River, Sacaton, Arizona.

  • Not a bad video but some of your references are a bit obvious. We know what the image of a dog with a bone looks like! No need to try quite so hard to cover all words literally. Great song though.

  • Salute Ira Hayes.

  • You really need to look at all the blood on your nations hands before talk so much shit. I am a native american so as you brits say "piss off"! The demon whiskey does ease the pain of war, as a two war vet I dance with that demon everyday, sometimes I lead and sometimes I don't. We hold our warriors with high regard no matter how they fall!!

  • Vietnam returns to me often. I thank Christ that I came home with all my body parts. You have a battle brother; however, remember that you, as I, owe our 58,000 fallen brothers more than could ever be imagined. This their legacy to us. It is our duty to live a better life and help those that are in need.

  • There are disrespectful assholes in EVERY COUNTRY, guess you are proof of that.

  • You were not there. So get some toilet paper and clean out that ugly mouth of yours. You stink.

  • Don't combine all of Americans then or now based on some of our nation.

  • A beautiful song. God rest Ira Hayes' precious soul !!!

  • 5/5, loved the end. old john said "F#%k 'Em"!

  • dude how old are u? did pay attention in history class at all

  • dumb ass george W bush did do shit to the indians his ancesters did u fuckhead george bush was born in america but the founding fathers of america wee the ones who took the natives land u are the worlds biggest dumb ass, and im not defending bush he's an idiot but still he didnt do shit the the natives

  • Cash couldn't carry a tune in a bucket but somehow he managed to invest many of his simple ballards with an earthy pathos that mak.e them quite moving, and none more so than this poignant tale of betrayal and self-destruction. Ira Hayes, as Cash probably knew, could be a metaphor for a decadent American society that uses working class kids as cannon fodder in its wars of imperialist conquest, briefly euloqizes them and then coldly casts them on the rubbish heap. Glad the song still touches us

  • ur dumb ira was a war hero from years ago george bush has nothing to do with the europeons takeing over north cuz that a looong time ago before bush was evan alive u are seriusly dumb

  • dannyboy; complain and complain and place fault with someone else. grow up and at least act like a man.

  • I'm a former Marine and a historian. Most of the comments on here are pathetic. Why do you think the entire world is turning against us? American arrogance is becoming abhorrent and the blatant racism that hasn't gone away is quite sickening. RIP Ira and if I ever see you in the other world I'll have a glass of whisky with you.

  • wat the hell does that mean, let me piont out flaws. bush didnt steal shit exept two terms, and wat does the squirrel have to do with this, and why emphisis "white" man, we arent the only ones driving trucks.

  • the one on the way left in the flag picture is Ira Hayes

  • penta954

how can you say your good at winning wars, you killed more brits in the gulf than sadam, and i think the only war you won was the war of independance(cos you fought yourselves)different result in NAM, you came into WW1&2 near the end so that you could claim glory.i'm sure that if the NATIVE american had the firepower then the results would definatly been different

  • Are you retarded? you seriously believe that the US entrance into world war 2 didn't help defeat the NAZIS? we fought for 4 years almost the same amount of time as the Ruskies. the brits didn't do shit in the pacific and were losing in Europe and africa when we joined in. The natives did have firepower they didn't have manpower you moron. we won the revolution as we fought you teasucking fogbreathing bastards. where exactly did you learn your history? so far the only war we have lost was nam.

  • Are you retarded? you seriously believe that the US entrance into world war 2 didn't help defeat the NAZIS? we fought for 4 years almost the same amount of time as the Ruskies. the brits didn't do shit in the pacific and were losing in Europe and africa when we joined in. • your wrong and your right first off we helped if not for us everyone would be under german rule and yes if the indians had the firepower white people would still be british of course they wouldnt do that because they wouldnt use the weapons of their enemies the indians killed many of you brits n still didnt use guns u fucked up cause americans didnt fight the indians the brits did america didnt exist yet only the colonies and when it did we saved ur ass even though u taxed the shit out of us,yw

  • only nam? what about korea? and iraq???

    Stupid bitch..

  • we won in korea and iraq is current, dumb bastard shoot yourself in the head. commie

  • dont call me a bitch ass and what about nam and korea?

  • Ha "if not for the u.s. everyone would be under german rule" not likely america didnt join the war till it was almost over u guys hardley did anything britan and canada a russia did most of the fighting in the war dumb ass

  • we droped nukes the 2nd time germany attacked, of course japan attacked us and we blasted their ass cause they did, not like now where u say any old body attaked and do whatever u want, and yeah with out our help everyone would be under german rule cause germany was winning until we showed up then what do u know they lost so fuck off bastard

  • and what does that mean? that its ok to take conquer other peoples property?

Does the fact that im stronger than my little brother make it ok for me to beat him up?

    What a stupiid comment..

  • I don't remenber a part of history when there wasn't a war going on.

The simple fact is that we are better at winning them. and always will be.

  • SniperFranz you have got to be the closest to retard u can get.

Your saying that the white ones didnt "steal" the land, cause they really fought for it..

Does that mean its ok?? Is it ok for me to kill my dad if i kill him with my fist and not while he is sleeping cause that means im really fighting for it?

And one more thing, you say it was ok to take the land cause it was Gods intention, well are you then saying that the 9/11 was a great thing, cause if it wasnt god would have stopped it?

  • Sad story about an American hero....which was made into a pitiful video showing the posters political agenda.

Search up the REAL Johnny Cash/Ira Hayes video, not this piece of trash.

    Semper Fi Ira...Hoorah!!

  • suggest you read "bury my heart at wounded knee"

  • I will look for it. My school wastes more money on sports than books for the library. My town library is struggling too. But I will look for it.

  • Thank you also try Custer died for your sins, by Vine Delora

  • History has painted Custer a fool. I don't stick up for him. He graduated 34th, the bottom of his class; however, that in itselfisd misleading. 29 cadets left West Point to join the Confederacy. 23 dropped out of the Point for academic reasons.

    Now re do your match.

  • bull shit are land was stolen from us

  • bull shit. U should have fought harder asshole. God wanted us 2 have that land so fuck off prairie nigger. U stole plenty of my peoples fuckin scalps too asshole. Only thing u prairie niggers were usin it 4 was killin ur own people in ur little stone-aged wars

  • Wow, there are still some dumb ass comments that take me by surprise.

  • Thanks for this upload-listened to it many times from my Dad's 45 records collection. God Bless you Ira and all USMC. Heroes who

don't want us bickering about politics now, he was a hero-as so many more are/were.

God Bless the USA troops-I may not support politics, but I thank and support our troops, inc. our Vets and servicemen/women

    always!

    R.I.P. Ira...and all Marines...my Dad was there.

  • Thanks Anchoragemark

  • Thanks for video

  • I can't figure why so many negative comments on this video...Ira Hayes was an Indian, but he could have been a Jew, an African American, or Chinese, or any Race..Is there anyone here who would have had the guts to be with him when he help to raise our flag on Iwo Jima.

  • I like to think that if we had been side-by-side raising the flag on Iwo, his race wouldn't have mattered to me ---at least not while we were raisimg the flag--- but the fact of the matter is that this white Southerner would probably have carried into battle with him the prejudices of his forbears. After the battle, I probably would have done some rethinking, though

  • Im not trying to say in this comment, that Ira was a good-for-nothing indian. He was a brave man. If you fight for the sake of your freedom, you have erned my respect. But all these people who say that we stole there land really ticks me off. We fought it from them and God gave us a little help.

  • I think some of you have no idea what you are talking about.

The American Indian was the most abused of all in the United States. We lied to them and then sent them to what amounts to concentration camps in Florida.

And besides this video is about a Marine who fought on Iwo Jima and not about how "We" took their land.

    Sgt. USMC 1963-1967

  • It dosent matter god or gods The indians deserved the land.

  • No one deserves any land. Who owned thr land before
