My buddies criticized me for buying this cassette back in the seventies. Sorry boys, I think I got this one right. Cold Autumn Sunday, also very good, good times my friends
The album cover didn't help. I told some buddies about this record, they thought it pictured a bible on the cover. (I remember getting the 8 track tape of this one back then)
Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
To me, stunning proof that if Ken Hensley is not a bona fide genius, he is but one small notch below. What really propels this song is that (the late) Gary Thain contributes that great lyrical bass line. As I listen with headphones, I sing this song aloud while walking at the local park. People stare but those who listen, get it. Love Hensley. Tremendous that (nowadays) he gives all the glory to his Creator. Beautiful.
You should be able to play this in standard tuning with no problem. As previously mentioned the main verse is Bm to Em and then G, A, Bm for what could be called the chorus.
The final section "My heart is hurting so bad" is E, D, Bm 3 times and then "ooo ooo from time to time" is D, E, Bm. And note that these are E major not Em like the main verses.

I completely wore my vinyl of this album to shreds. I was delighted to find it on Amazon in cd about 7 or 8 years ago. It keeps going in and out of availability. Keep checking back.
Still one of the best ballad songs ever written! This song always takes me back during my younger years while growing up in Saipan. Music never gets old, but we , human beings are the ones getting older by the minute.
This passage is taken from Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum page 484 chapter 93
The only society known to us capable of rivaling us in these arts is that of the Jesuits. But we have succeeded in discrediting the Jesuits in the eyes of the stupid populace, because that society is an open organization, whereas we stay in the wings, maintaning secrecy. Protocol, v
Does anyone have the tabs for this song? I only have one file called "tabs" with just the chord names, and none of the combinations I found in the chord program on my computer sounded right. Also, how do you strike the strings with your right hand. I can't get that right either, sounds too mechanical. (Yes, I'm an amateur, but I like to download tabs and learn to play good songs).
@aliennationmicrodot As I wrote, I downloaded the "tabs" (i.e. chords). They say the first chord (in the intro and the verse) is Dm and the second one is G. I tried all variants of those chords that I could find on the web, but it still doesn't sound right. (The ones that sounded most right were barre chords on the 4th and 2nd frets). It's also quite difficult for me as an amateur to get the higher tones right. I assume one needs to mute the strings on and off?
One of my favorite song to jam on my acousitic. THis song reminded me of my buddy, Eddie Fleming who had passed away last year. He started playing the drums in a band when he was only seven years old. He sang lots of UH songs with his band. Ken Hensley was a true genius. We practically get so high to nothing but UH songs back in the early 70's. THank you for sharing.
Tall words, "...of all time, anywhere, bar none." But offhand, I can't think of a good arguement! Excellant album! Excellant sound quality as well. Thanks.
This is a great LP, really like the Heep, solo and Blackfoot stuff. Got to see Uriah Heep a few times in the 70's, best with Gary Thain...he was an amazing bass player, Trevor is worthy though!...Haven't been able to find Proud Words, Eager To Please or Free Spirit on CD though...yet!
@alanmorri I believe you can find the mentioned records on Amazon (not sure). In any case I have them all. :-) If I recall I bought them from one of the main Swedish Internet record stores, so they should be available in your country as well.

I think I have heard a Porcupine Tree-song that must have recycled this musical theme.

@fbendz I'm pretty sure the song is in E-minor. My band way back in the 70's played it. (Hint: tune your guitar to open E-minor!)
