  • I can now play these exercises at the accelerated tempo he does at the end of this video. If you do exactly as he says, meaning start slooooow and I mean slooooow you'll get it bur you have to follow his instructions exactly meaning don't jump ahead until you teach your right hand to relax by starting extremely slow.

  • It's alot of hard work but well worth it!

  • jaco's technique...it's all jaco...not neccesary tho.

  • dude, on the excercise @ 1:50

how do you NOT hit the D string with your middle finger when hitting the A string with your index? His shit just glides over and you here nothing...but when I do it I can't seem to do the same. I know I'm not digging in deep as well. I know this isn't easy to learn, but it sure is frustrating no matter how slow I go. Plus my fingers get real stiff on the range of motion..most of this is whiner talk...oh the woe of a beginner.

  • @bizmarkfreak it's just a matter of control :) you'll get it. Just remember to relax the hand between notes

  • Is it just me or does this guy sound like he has a mouth full of spit when he talks?

  • Thanks for being so upfront about it. It's still important though...

Younger players have a good starting point, and with extended range basses, this is important..

    Ciao, and thanks..

  • ..awrite ?

  • ".....alright"

  • "alright"

  • i could listen to this guy talk all day

  • Wait so do we use 3 fingers or is that when we use 5 string bass? (im new to the bass)

  • where is the control of tone on this bass????? medium/hight/low ecc

  • dampening took me alonggggggggggggg time to learn perfectly...just practice practice..i hate when bassist come up to me saying "aww ill never play like that" you know what i tell them "you sound just like me when i was a beginner"

    practice practice practice

    trust me

  • You can hear all kinds of harmonics when you do that, I consider that a bad thing.

  • leporidus the overtone are just pinch harmonics pretty much for you , artificial harmonic if u wana be technical about it

  • ohhh que bosta

  • Such a well thought out way of playing. I've looked high and low for something like this!

  • @elzilcho44

Classical guitar technique. That would be my guess on the influence. It's funny though, I don't notice him using his ring finger much anymore, he swapped it out for thumb. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places.

  • so good

  • Goddamn this technique is so hard to use

  • @bububuvard

It is difficult the first two to three weeks, then it goes automatically if you practise 8-10 hours a day!

  • he's god...

  • This is a good technique to play "harmonics" after you play a note.

  • obviously this does not mean progressive rock, much to my chagrin.

  • Gary, you're a fantastic player. Thanks for sharing.

  • I really like the overtones you hear during damping. It's like a parallel theme.

  • alright

  • ah the SMART ASS IDIOTS never fail to open the beak or use the dirty nails to write stupidities, did you bothered to READ the word BASSICS??

the typical ignorant NON PLAYER thinks that like the movies you can play in 15 minutes, the beginigs are slow an tedious and have to be explained step by step if not you will learn yes but absolutely WRONG and risk on injuries, the silly ones go ahead and clash your wrist the rest practice slow and gain speed

    watta guys :S

  • post a video response with the "funny and quick" technique then, but , doing the same results... c'mon do it you woodpecker

    xD

  • Of course he's not a solo bassist. He's a supportive bass player who plays with groups.

The comment on his "solo" stuff is ridiculous. All of that footage comes from clinics and lessons, and if you expect him to hire a band to play with for such events then you clearly think there's a lot more money in jazz then there is.

  • Man...you are ignorant and stupid. You have no idea what you are talking about. This is video which Willis hates, and the backing tracks you are talking about are recorded clinics or his drum n bass projects. You obviously never heard Tribal Tech live. Check out his records, with Chambers and Kinsey and others, he´ll blow your head of...

    Best regards, Sandemose

  • Interesting stuff! even though i don't use 3 fingers when i play, he brought up some good points.

  • Hi guys,

if you wanna hear some new Bass Playing

go and check the "Low kick-freedom jazz dance " video.

i saw them at the EURO BASS DAY in Verona, they're brilliant!

    cheers

  • Many thanks for sharing this here, Gary!

You may not like it all that much, but I am certainly finding it useful. You can never watch enough and learn enough. Jose

  • it looks like an Ibenez

  • wa bass is that anyway

  • gary willis is amazing. this technique is mostly for three finger plucking, for example when playing descending parts his third finger trails and does the dampening, im a 2finger player and it takes a lot of practice to do this properly. still very helpfull all round.

  • Seems like the producer/director had no experience doing music instruction videos, which is too bad. There is still a lot of excellent information in this series. GW i a genius for thinking up this technique in the first place while executing it in such a musical way.

  • thank you mister willis. Great info for guyz like me (learning to play a 6 string bass). greetz from venezuela.

  • Gary, man, we'll take what we can get from you! Thanks for posting!

  • dadadadada

  • Ele tá magão...

  • thanks for posting this. great right hand control ideas.
