right off the bat I see Lewis holding and jumping at Mike to hold him, possibly to zap him of his speed and strength. This "fight" is a farce, I still can't bring myself to watch the whole thing. Tyson was shot years before this.
Lewis may go down in history as the best, but it's NOT because he beat Tyson
TYSON WAS FINISHED IN THIS FIGHT, HE WAS RIDICULOUS AGAINST GOLOTA IN 2000, I THINK THAT A PEAK TYSON 88 WOULD BEAT LEWIS, BUT IT WOULD BE STILL CLOSE.
@pmack169 Yes Tysons best bet was to work the body.Punching upwards is exhausting and i think any version of Mike woud have found a mature Lennox too much to handle, given that Mike never advanced his mental game and never won a fight he was behind on possibly.Perhaps the Ruddock fight is an exception but not much else.
its sad people wont accept that tyson got beat fair an square. an that some even go as far as claiming he was the G.O.A.T what idiots, tyson was very overrated its a joke he could punch but not box lennox lewis even said this."if you move around the ring he has to come after you, he is only a 1 dimensional fighter." lennox is great not tyson. also today whatever claims any tyson fanboy makes if he came an fought the klitschko brothers he would get killed klitschkos have bin prime 4 a long time.
Its easy to forget but Tyson at his best defensively was possibly the quickest, most elusive hw in history with a fine chin.IMO Lennox would have found that version of Mike extremely hard to tag.I consider Lennox to have a legit claim to be the GOAT but a top Tyson would have seen a very different, far tougher fight for Lennox.
If you compare this fight with Tysons fight against Tony Tucker the first round is very similiar. Tyson charged at Tucker, Tyson got hit and Tyson got hurt. However the rest of fight wasn't. Tyson came back in the 2nd round ducked punches and dominated the rest of the fight. Against Lewis he gave up and was easily beaten. Clearly not a prime Tyson fighting Lennox Lewis.
Man when Tyson starts bobbing, you better be getting the fuck out of the way... Lewis would have gotten owned by a prime Tyson, much like any fighter in the history of boxing. Yes that includes Ali. I can't say who would have won that for sure, but Frazier caught Ali with a hook and dropped him, If Tyson would have landed one(which he would have because his slipping/weaving/speed was better than Fraziers) it would have been goodnight Irene. But you can't count out the greatest either.
lol why do Americans insist on still making excuses for Mike Tyson because he was knocked out in this match? come on guys he lost fair and square. deal with it.
Lennox is the most overrated bum in HW history. Got KO'd flat by Bull friggin' McCall and the Rock. Also got a gift decision over Ray Mercer. He never beat a top HW in his prime. Jim Lampley's excessive knob gobbing of Lewis was a travesty.
@DavidHayeIsDead Well everyone has their own opinions i suppose, lets just leave it at that. Suprised with your last comment unlike the others you didn't refer to Tyson as some kind of god :)
@DavidHayeIsDead When it came to an out and out brawl I will agree that Tyson would probably be the favourite over any boxer but when it came to a boxing match, even though Tyson was good, there was some BOXERS *cough* Evander Holyfield *cough* that were just too good for him. Muhammed Ali in his prime was practically unbeatable and he beat fighters that in my opinion would have ate Tyson e.g. Foreman Frazier Liston.
@DavidHayeIsDead Well thats your opinion and everyone has their own. When it comes to "Tyson would have beat anyone in history in 89" - maybe, and a big maybe with Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, but no way would he have beat Ali - Tyson at best is the second best heavyweight ever and he himself agreed that Ali was better.
@DavidHayeIsDead Yeah he did peak earlier just not as much as people think because in his early days he had NO competition and was feared and dodged many good fighters including Holyfield for a couple of years and he as soon as a good BOXER fought against him he got beat, just like me and my dad knew he would.
Lewis is older then tyson sure but he was in far better shape tyson could only catch you with one puch this late in his career he lost his speed his combinations his desire to fight mike in his prime takes lewis out 1 round easy
The knockout was more about Tyson just being dead tired due to poor stamina. Once he got tired when he was old the head movement stopped and he starts getting hit. He had great head movement 1st round and was working behind the jab but couldnt maintain it.
Young Tyson could continue that quick assault for a longer period of time and over the course of the fight. Plus he was much quicker back in the 80s with better conditioning. Look at this Tyson tire so fast. He cant fight that fast pace long enough which would have given Lewis problems.
Mike was unfit , did not prepare properly and took the fight purely for financial reasons. Mike and team was fully aware that this was Mike's last big pay day and last mega fight before retirement.
Lennox on the other hand was very well prepared and super focused. Lennox strategy was to drain Tyson's energy by holding and popping him with jabs.
A prime Tyson (i.e. Tyson vs Spinks) would have beaten Lennox either by late KO or points. Lennox was very talented but not in the same league.
Tyson was shot to bits here but done relatively ok in round 1, when he came forward Lewis had no idea what to do and just hung on confused and scared, this was a pale shadow of Tyson imagine what Tyson of the 80s would have done to him, I'd give it 1-2 rounds, I don't care what anyone says.
Tyson even when he won back the title in 1996 was no where close to the version 10 years before that when he was training on a regular basis. NO LAYOFFS
In boxing you cant lay off years and still maintain your reflexes, speed, your conditoning. When he was younger he loved to train would run 6 to 7 miles a day.
Old Tyson didnt even do roadworl. Run 1 mile and thats it. Watch clips of him training in 1986. Tyson would run 5 to 6 miles at a fast pace
Bottom line is prime Tyson was 217 pound. Here he's like 240. He;s fat out of shape which ruins your conditioning. Its not about the age. Lewis always stayed active while Tyson was off 1992-1995 and 1998 and 1999. Young Mike before prison before the layoffs was much quicker. lighter, better stamina. He could bob and weave with speed for more than just 1 or 2 rounds without tiring
Do you think joe fraizer would have laid on his back for the 10 count against douglas or lewis? Fraizer never gave up in his life. in his only losses to ali and foreman fraizer begged his trainer not to stop the ali fight and got up 6 times before the ref stopped the foreman fight. "a great fighter gets up when he knows he cant" - Jack dempsey. Tyson laid down when he knew he could get up.
Its true tysons style needed the lightning sharp reflex's of a younger man. But tyson didnt have the mental stability of a all time great. ali was banned from boxing in his physical prime for the same time tyson was in prison but ali overcame it. Tyson was scared of fighting a 45 year old foreman. Tyson would just fall short of my top 10 heavyweights list with lewis maybe coming in near the bottom.
tyson didn't train that hard for this, he wasn't the same man after he went to prison...to be technically he wasn't the same couple of days before spinks' fight. it looked as if tyson wanted to take punishment from lewis and threw himself to the canvas so he could pay mad bills and stay out of bankruptcy !
Lewis beat an old man Tyson, who hadn't trained as he used to, Despite that fact Lewis was HOLDING him in the very first rounds! Now what you say to that?!
How old was Lewis? Wasn't he 35 too? Was it Lewis' fault that Tyson 'peaked' at 22 as some of these Tyson nuthuggers claim? No one seemed to care that Tyson beat a 38 year old Holmes or a past his prime Spinks...but suddenly, nothing but excuses whenever Tyson loses. He got his ass kicked by Lewis, he got his ass kicked by Holyfield, and he got his ass kicked by Buster Douglas. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
@cbaldwinjr So you don't believe that Tyson was by this point in his career a significantly diminished fighter? You see, a fighter like Lewis will, owing to style and physicality, hold up better as the years advance that a fighter like Tyson so both being the same age is basically an irrelevance. Tyson was at his best between 86-88.
@irishbuy tyson out his prime blah blah. lennox was ALWAYS in his prime from start to finsih what u got to say about that?!. lennox is also an olympic gold medalist! and u could see it in him how he fights. Give lennox respect where its do.
@irishbuy excuses again your an absolute joke like the rest of them tyson fanboys with the excuses no matter if tyson was in his prime or not lewis would still fuck him up like this fight. understand this, lennox is greater than tyson so is geroge foreman, muhhamad ali, klitschko brothers, joe frazier jack dempsey. people like that. youre a joke an laughing stock as is tyson.
@rycoys10 he was...sad thing about watching it...yeh lewis is good but he made mistakes that a younger tyosn would of dealt with i honestly think within 6 rnds.
Lewis' grabbing is fairly embarrassing. Ref should could have warned or deducted points. Tyson didn't have a great fight either.

We just have diff opinion here.

@pmack169
Well this fight was a much slower Tyson then a prime Tyson and Still some of the
hooks in the first round wasnt to far off, if this had been 10 years earlier i think that there
is a big chanse that Tyson would have connected with 1 off those.
Like i said Tyson was much faster back then but not Lewis he was actully much stiffer prior to E Steward.
Lewis like he often said aged like a fine whine unlike Tyson who was at hes best at a young age.
