Just because you can't hear them scream doesn't mean they don't feel the horror of being pulled out of the ground so you can toss them into a boiling pot of water, or just drive a knife through their flesh, all while you're detached from emotion.

    There are those who eat meat and respect and give thanks because of it. Just like vegetarians respect vegetables and give thanks for them, too.

    Want a more layman's example? Mythbusters did their own experiment. I'll NetFlix it (I don't have cable) but I do know they could NOT declare the myth "busted".

    So no, one can't really say they in fact feel pain, but many research shows they do experience something, even if you threaten it, it'll react. Sentient.

  • @stealthyeros I do agree all life does not want to die. As intelligent humans though we need to find a healthy balance. We need to eat life to survive, whether its algae, spinach, fish, or cows. Feeding on the "lowest" life forms is not only more humane, but is actually healthier and better for us. So I conveniently ignore the "dying screams" of spinach but allow myself to feel sympathy for the pretty gals pet chicken.

  • @femanvate There lies the problem. The old hen is not a pet, she never refers to it as a pet, people are assuming it's a pet, but it's not. She farms hens for eggs and meat. They're not pets. How does that not register with people? They're farmed for food. Period. An honest farm in Scotland will kill an animal humanely and sell for meat. They're not tortured at all. But you'll ignore certain things and allow yourself to feel some things for your convenience...

No one will force feed you any. But that doesn't give anyone the right to make someone feel bad for eating meat. It's a choice. We respect your choice to only eat vegetables, so we expect the same respect for our choice to eat meat with vegetables.

As I suggested to femanvate I will give you the same suggestion: do some research on what's out there and gather a perspective from another angle, not just the one you have.

  • I actually have a lot of respect for people like this woman, who are conscious about what they eat. I consider it a lot more cruel and desensitised, if people carelessly buy industrially produced meat, and don't give a fuck about how the animals were treated before they came to the shopping mall as ready-to-eat food.

  • i agree, most of people dont know anything about what they are eating i turned my diet in almost 90% vegetarian... i must say in my country there is not too much the concept of meat factory, there is real farms but as i was saying... i just eat meat when i NEED nutrients not kuz i can.

  • The flavour of older hens are more intense too. Does longer cooking time mellow out the flavour of the meat, or do you just roll with it and work with it by using bolder ingredients like red wine, tomato, etc?

    I'd say if you look around on youtube you'll probably find something. It seems like I recall another video, dealing with urban farming and a guy was talking about how it was actually pretty difficult.

    I'd say really though, its no big deal as long as you have the right mind set.

  • A hen tastes different then a regular chicken, it's delicious in a soup, and I use it to make chicken pot pie. Don't forget to boil it for a long time, the meat will be thougher then a regular chicken. 20 minutes per pound, and you simmer it.

  • You speak of conscience, a mostly religious concept, and then say "simple biology" - a nervous system is an adaptive characteristic of animals that enabled them to avoid dangerous stimuli, it's only a series of electrical impulses, almost like a computer.

    Once the chicken dies, these impulses are gone and the chicken doesn't feel anything. It's simple biology.

    You're also using the word "sadistic" incorrectly, but that's another show.

    The conscious part I didn't mean anything religious.. I just meant that they suffer and they know when something bad is happening. I have unfortunately to learn on animals, so I talk as my own experience.

    If you take a hen, it's a "poulet au vin". A "coq" is literally a cock or rooster. You can also use a capon.
