Ver a Larry Parks y escuchar a Al Jolson es algo estupendo, magnifico. Mi padre de muy joven me llevo a ver esta película y que de atarpado para siempre de la vox de este cantante espectacular.
Just absolutely fantastic - using today's technology - to be able to re-live and experience true talent all of those decades ago. Long live the memory of Al Jolson and his legacy of great music.
Al Jolson came to Korea during the war even after his doctor told him it could kill him. He went anyway and I was to far away to get to see him. He passed away soon after returning to the United States. A great human being, a great singer and showman and he loved this country and the servicemen & women.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It gives me chills to think of my parents dancing to this song. This week end will be my brother and sister-in-law's 50th wedding anniversary and I have arranged for a dear friend to sing this song for them.
I enjoy watching Al Jolson and his singing is out of this world, the great singers like him and Luciano Pavarotti, Maril Lanza etc have a better passion for songs as todays songs have no feelings or passions and the lyrics are crap. If these guys like AlJolson etc were alive today they would be very disappointed.
Al Jolson died before I was born, yet I saw this movie as a kid in the 60's and love it to this day. His voice was without a doubt deeper in his older age when he re-recorded his songs for this movie. Re-recording aided in the lip syncing with Larry Parks. I have heard many versions of the Anniversary Song and by far this still has to be the best. No the movie was not 100% accurate, but who cares? It's Hollywood of old and still a great story with amazing music and vocals by a great entertainer!
I think of my parents when i hear this song and the love they had for each other and the memories i have of their love and i weep for the tenderness they had for each other .
The original melody was written by a Romanian military band leader by the name of Iosif Ivanovici and the title was Waves of the Danube (a Romanian Waltz). Youtube has some lovely videos.
I am Roman Catholic, and my father taught me that they are GODS chosen people. Anyway this song will live in my heart no matter what I am because of it meaning and it melody.
@djdannyv1 ... I was raised Catholic and am til the day I die. Never once did I hear a bad word against anyone. People who are anti-Catholic abound and Vostrau seems to have a grude. Just saying the truth.
@flatlineOS You're only Half Right. The song based on a Rumanian meloy. The LYRICS were written by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin, definitly both Jewish. The Original Yiddish Lyrics are by Chaim Tauber.
Though the melody had not "ethic" context, the SONG is definitely Jewish. But the important thing is that it's a great song. There is a new CD, "Jewish Soul" that has this song by Jackie Wilson who idolized Jolson...also on the CD, Tom Jones, Johnny Mathis, Eartha Kitt doing Jewish Songs!!!!
@vividpaulus The ORIGINAL Yiddish title was, "Der Chassene Waltz" , however there is more than one Yiddish version of the song, also a verions at "Unzer Ester Waltz"....iIf you want a Yiddish version of the song, contact Hatikvah Music at klezcorner@aol.com. They have a huge selection of Yiddish CDs...hundreds of them.
Come on over to "Songs Of Life" on facebook, there will be lots of Jolson i tell you,i am a member of the International Al Jolson Society, come and join us all eh :))
I know Larry Parks was lip syncing throughout the movie, and that it was really Al Jolson singing. My question is, did Al Jolson re-record these songs for the movie, or were they the original recordings of the song, since he was still alive when this movie and the sequel to this movie were made.
@EbonyBunny1 It was determined by the film's producers that the original recordings by Jolson were not up to the technical standards of the day, so Jolson was asked to re-record all of the tunes for the movie. As a result at times Parks seems to have the voice of a much older man. Jolson was 60 at the time of this movie and his voice was much deeper than it had been. The one exception was this song which was written expressly for the movie, and thus no earlier version existed.

@EbonyBunny1 I didn't have room to add that this song was released as a single and became one of the biggest hits of 1947 with Jolson singing. In the sequel, Jolson Sings Again, there are even scenes of Jolson re-recording songs for the The Jolson Story and being a little irked at the new methods. There is a lot of information at the Jolson website. It is the usual w w w, but ends with Jolson dot org. I had to write it this way as youtube does not allow website links.
I actually heard a Korean version at an internet cafe and when I told the kid behind the desk it was an American song, he didn't believe me. He actually insisted it was Korean. Course this scene confirms the tune came from a waltz, Polish I think?
@tlyoung88 Romanian, actually :P The original song was written as a Viennese Waltz by Romanian composer Iosif Ivanovici, half a century earlier! Jolson adapted it and wrote the lyrics for the American version he named The Anniversary Song. The Original, though, still is one of the most famous Waltzes around the world, you should check it out :P Love this version as well, there are many around btw. This just goes to prove what an amazing composer Iosif Ivanovici is. Great song!
@magibubu ...One of many beautiful songs from ' The Jolson Story ".....released early 1950's I believe...Larry Parks played the role of A.J. and was stunning....One of the all time great performances in movie history in my opinion....Do yourself a favour and find a copy, you won't be disappointed ....Regards from downunder..Chris
@ugha323a I said it was a good movie & very entertaining. I really liked the movie, I would watch it again. I was just stating it wasn't very accurate, so people didn't get the impression it was true account of his life.
I remember watching this with my dad when I was younger. I love this song the first time I heard it and still do. Just such a wonderful and beautiful song.

A gorgeous tune, and glad to hear it from the original! Jolson was amazing!
As for the hatred of Jews, I think it has far less to do with the Jews than it does with people's capacity for hate. Those who are wont to hate will find even the smallest of differences excuse enough. They would rather hate than get to know and understand.
I Remember when i first heard/saw this.. in the 40's. Larry Parks was the best "non" musical performer ever. It's amazing how Jolson sounded better than when he was younger. A very special moment in a "great" motion picture. But then- most of you just wouldn't "get it".
I still remember seeing this film as a wee boy in the late 1940s and Jolson's voice still brings out the goose bumps. I think his voice at this late stage in his life was far better than in his hay days. The man was magic.

when I was a kid I was so bored with my parents "slow music" but when I was about 11 my uncle, who was jewish, heard this song being played and sang along with it. I was so transfixed I stood their with my mouth open.....I don't know why. It was sung by some popular singer, not Al jolson....my uncle found an old 8mm of Jolson singing it for me. My uncle passed away but I'll always love him and this song.
I have always been a motorhead man and hardcore dance dj!! by accident i watched this film it had me nearly in tears when he sings this song! i have got a few compilations of al jolson i still love to play them you he was an all round entertainer he just loved to be singing i would have loved to have seen him in concert he would have had such a presence the only person to come near was probably elvis . what a guy
@xxxharizafcxxx , I was going to ask what gave you the idea that a man showing love for his parents must be gay, but then I read you're an Arsenal fan, and I can't argue with an Arse fan. O2O2BO2BA -GOONA!
Norman Brooks natural singing voive was so similar to Jolson's he portrayed him in "Best Things in Life Are Free" .
His nightclub act was great and his rendition of "Anniversary Song" though a little different was no less beautiful and heartfelt. Brooks was great and from Montreal!
It was great to see William 'Bill' Demarest in this role, as he was also in "The Jazz Singer" w/real Jolson. Too bad Bill & Al Jolson had a falling out in real life. He was great in Preston Sturges' films too.
I played this version at my parents 50th anniversary, and they waltzed to it, and sang to each other as they did.....It really is beautiful, and never fails to bring a tear when I hear Al Jolson sing it.....
Why people hate Jews is quite beyond me. They love, they feel pain, they die...just like the rest of us. But over the centuries they have given us great beauty as this video demonstrates.
@Vostrau1 When I was a boy I was taught to dislike Jews and to treat them as if they were lepers. But then I was able to attend a state university by working many different jobs...some of them for Jews. I was treated with dignity and respect even though I was only 19 or 20. I earned the trust of my Jewish boss and in return he trusted me with his brand new Pontiac GTO for fun days in LA with my friends. Jews have always been kind to me, a Christian. Anti-semitism is shameful.
@ugha323a I presume you are referring to Larry Parks. I believe he had "Mc Carthy" trouble in the early fifties. I have no clue if Mr. Parks is or was Jewish. Jews spans the political spectrum from ultra-leftist to the right wing commentators on Fox News. It is true that Jewish radicals helped foment the Russian Revolution...Leon Trotsky et al... but Jews have also won many Nobel prizes for work to the benefit of all mankind. I wish I could say that about Muslims.
@zeekwolfe Larry Parks was not Jewish. Indeed, he had trouble with HUAC. He was one of the earliest called up to testify because of some innocent leftist associations in the thirties. He ended up being forced to name names, having been convinced by HUAC that not to do so would be treason. His Hollywood career was effectively over. Very tragic story.
@zeekwolfe its christian ortodox romanian song, "the waves of danube", the composer is Jovan Ivanović, serbian descent (also christian)...so, no jews here :-)
@flatline There were times when the great German composer, Richard Wagner, would conduct music written by Jews. He would wear white gloves. At the end of the concert he would remove the gloves and place them in a trash receptacle...in full view of the audience. Hatred like this in the 19th century led to the horrors of the camps and the Holocaust. Music is music and hate has no place in it. Zum beispiel, delete the words of the "Horst Wessel Song" and what you have is an interesting tune.
@ZeekWolfe1 offcourse, music is music. maybe i was to quick to comment, i was thinking you are saying that this composition is jewish folklore. i wouldnt like to be understood as an antisemit :-).
regarding wagners conducting...I also find shamefull that his work is still "forbidden" in Israel :-(.
i guess that in this case, music "discrimination" goes both ways :-(.' It would be nice to find a klezmer band that does wagner's compositions.
Grandioso momento que vive uno cuando observa a sus padres bailando esta cancion, mientras que la voz de Al Jolson trasmite ese amor eterno entre tus progenitores como un mensaje para que uno lo pueda emular.
I went to the wedding of a Jewish friend quite a few years back and at the reception, I asked the DJ if they were going to play this song. They had a TOM JONES version.... I brought a tape of the genuine article, Mr. Al Jolson himself.
When the Bride's Pappa heard it being played, I was deliberately close by. He asked, "Where did that come from?", with a tear running down his cheek.
good on you pal , no disrespect to tom jones but al jolsen is the only one who should sing this song. i hope that when and if i get married i have a pal like you to do something like that.
@MyThomas123 gotta come to the US if you want to see genuine hate. especially these days, and against so many; Jews, blacks, Mexicans, anyone foreign, the French, Catholics, gays, and the list could go on. All brought about by a group who calls themselves "Evangelical Christians" and are anything but. They are hard nosed politically ambitious people and if you are not like them, they hate you. You are UnAmerican. Sarah Palin's church..ie...has a "pray away the gays" service. Give me Europe.
@123JDB789 Thats a great story,i have Al's songs on my ipod everwhere i go and will continues to share them as you did :)) Come on over to "Songs Of Life" on facebook, there will be lots of Jolson i tell you,i am a member of the International Al Jolson Society, come and join us all eh :))
Its people like Al Jolson, Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, George Burns, The Marx's Brothers, and of course Don Rickles That me proud of being Jewish. What a Beautiful Voice Mazel Tov
Iosif Ivanovici was a Romanian Jew who wrote this composition in 1880. He was known as the Johann Strauss of Romania and this song has been played at Jewish weddings for over 100 years.
My mother was an English Jew of Russian and Romanian ancestry. I always associate this song with her and her parents, I remember how mom used to sing it.
Music for the ages - Jolson's voice is second to none. This is a classic song in a classic movie. I love it and can listen anytime. Thank you "You Tube" to be able to hear this.
Beautiful scene by the adorable talented Larry Parks and the incomparable Al Jolson singing. This song appeared for the first time in The Jolson Story. It was actually written during the making of the movie. While they were filming, Al Jolson who was on the set, was heard humming an old tune. The producers loved it - Jolson and others went to work setting words to it and it emerged as The Anniversary Song. It became a huge hit after the release of the movie. Jolie is the best!
God, what a magnificent melody! What a magnificent voice had Jolson. And how unfair that Larry Parks was robbed of the Academy Award for playing him and for lip-synching so wonderfully. When the hell will the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Hollwood, stop allowing politics to dictate its decisions?
Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed We vowed our true love, though a word wasn't said The world was in bloom, there were stars in the skies Except for the few that were there in your eyes Dear as I held you close in my arms Angels were singing a hymn to your charms Two hearts gently beating murmuring low Darling I love you so The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime We'd find that our love
This is a wonderful scene. Its not just the beautiful song, and the perfect miming etc. but great acting and atmosphere. For those who dont know the movie,. Al has given up singing because his wife wants the quiet life - but he isn't happy. Here his father persuades him to sing and when he does you can see how much he loves it. Everyone at he table can see it - his wife, his manager, his parents. They all know what's going to happen. Later that night she quietly leaves him. Brilliant scene.
It is about our romanian waltz -The Danube waves by Iosif Ivanovici ,here in american version - Oh how we dance. I was looking for Andy Williams singing this but I did not found it.I recommend you also a deep creation of another romanian -Balada Ciprian Porumbescu. I am waiting your impresions.Best regard from Romania
the start reminds me of the trollolol song.

19 year old jolson fan here!

There is something about the song and the way Jolson sings it.
Jolson is my favourite entertainer of all time...would love to have seen the 8mm film!
Feel free to visit my channel if you are passing by...kindest regards Meryl Heasman.

when I was a kid I was so bored with my parents "slow music" but when I was about 11 my uncle, who was jewish, heard this song being played and sang along with it. I was so transfixed I stood their with my mouth open.....I don't know why. It was sung by some popular singer, not Al jolson....my uncle found an old 8mm of Jolson singing it for me. My uncle passed away but I'll always love him and this song.

Norman Brooks natural singing voive was so similar to Jolson's he portrayed him in "Best Things in Life Are Free" .
His nightclub act was great and his rendition of "Anniversary Song" though a little different was no less beautiful and heartfelt. Brooks was great and from Montreal!
jackhallett 2 years ago
It was great to see William 'Bill' Demarest in this role, as he was also in "The Jazz Singer" w/real Jolson. Too bad Bill & Al Jolson had a falling out in real life. He was great in Preston Sturges' films too.

I played this version at my parents 50th anniversary, and they waltzed to it, and sang to each other as they did.....It really is beautiful, and never fails to bring a tear when I hear Al Jolson sing it.....

In 1949 Al Jolson said that Frankie Laine would put them all out of business.

Anti-semitism is shameful.
zeekwolfe 1 year ago 41
@zeekwolfe IT IS RARE.You're extremely lucky to meet such Jews.
Vostrau1 1 year ago
This is from a bygone era but one that shows the beauty of that period of time in this country and those that made it so.
Al Jolson was the ultimate performer. His life showed he wanted nothing else than to sing and perform before an audience.
Anyone who dislikes this video has blinders on and apparantly ONLY likes modern RAP and the like.
The movie showing the life of Al Jolson was superbly done. The acting and stroy content was right on the mark.

I dont like leftist Jews and I am a Jew
ugha323a 11 months ago
@ugha323a I presume you are referring to Larry Parks. I believe he had "Mc Carthy" trouble in the early fifties. I have no clue if Mr. Parks is or was Jewish. Jews spans the political spectrum from ultra-leftist to the right wing commentators on Fox News. It is true that Jewish radicals helped foment the Russian Revolution...Leon Trotsky et al... but Jews have also won many Nobel prizes for work to the benefit of all mankind. I wish I could say that about Muslims.
zeekwolfe 11 months ago
@zeekwolfe Larry Parks was not Jewish. Indeed, he had trouble with HUAC. He was one of the earliest called up to testify because of some innocent leftist associations in the thirties. He ended up being forced to name names, having been convinced by HUAC that not to do so would be treason. His Hollywood career was effectively over. Very tragic story.

@zeekwolfe its christian ortodox romanian song, "the waves of danube", the composer is Jovan Ivanović, serbian descent (also christian)...so, no jews here :-)
flatlineOS 10 months ago
@flatline There were times when the great German composer, Richard Wagner, would conduct music written by Jews. He would wear white gloves. At the end of the concert he would remove the gloves and place them in a trash receptacle...in full view of the audience. Hatred like this in the 19th century led to the horrors of the camps and the Holocaust. Music is music and hate has no place in it. Zum beispiel, delete the words of the "Horst Wessel Song" and what you have is an interesting tune.
ZeekWolfe1 10 months ago 2
@ZeekWolfe1 offcourse, music is music. maybe i was to quick to comment, i was thinking you are saying that this composition is jewish folklore. i wouldnt like to be understood as an antisemit :-).
regarding wagners conducting...I also find shamefull that his work is still "forbidden" in Israel :-(.
i guess that in this case, music "discrimination" goes both ways :-(.' It would be nice to find a klezmer band that does wagner's compositions.
wouldn it :-)?

I went to the wedding of a Jewish friend quite a few years back and at the reception, I asked the DJ if they were going to play this song. They had a TOM JONES version.... I brought a tape of the genuine article, Mr. Al Jolson himself.
When the Bride's Pappa heard it being played, I was deliberately close by. He asked, "Where did that come from?", with a tear running down his cheek.
I proudly confessed. "I brought it!"

Sadly,in real life Jolson's cantor father was not as kindly or
as understanding as this actor..playing Cantor Yoleson. Also..Jolson's mom died, when he was 10..so she never
lived long enough to see her son become a hit.

298625 2 years ago
God, what a magnificent melody! What a magnificent voice had Jolson. And how unfair that Larry Parks was robbed of the Academy Award for playing him and for lip-synching so wonderfully. When the hell will the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Hollwood, stop allowing politics to dictate its decisions?

This is a wonderful scene. Its not just the beautiful song, and the perfect miming etc. but great acting and atmosphere. For those who dont know the movie,. Al has given up singing because his wife wants the quiet life - but he isn't happy. Here his father persuades him to sing and when he does you can see how much he loves it. Everyone at he table can see it - his wife, his manager, his parents. They all know what's going to happen. Later that night she quietly leaves him. Brilliant scene.
